Tinker (GFWL) - Walkthrough OverviewUpdate notes

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the walkthrough for Tinker! This simple looking, yet quite challenging game will require some time to complete, so you'll need plenty of videos to guide you through it. I want to point out beforehand that the videos used in this walkthrough only show one way to complete all the given requirements in a level. So, if you ever have trouble following the way shown in a certain video, there are other videos which can be found on YouTube that show alternate ways to meet the requirements.

I also want to note that this game is known to glitch certain achievements for some people. The most common achievements that glitch are the ones where you need to move a certain number of times. To avoid this, you should do "Smack My Switch Up," "Robot Controller," and "Robot Master" in one sitting. Most, if not all, achievements in this game are "story related." By this, I mean if you focus on completing and obtaining all the requirements for the 160 levels in the game, you'll pretty much net most of the achievements in the game.

Good luck!

Tinker (GFWL) - General hints and tips

Tinker is a free puzzle game which you can download via Games for Windows - Live. There really isn't any skill involved in completing it. The reason few people have completed it is the game is repetitive and time-consuming to get all stars on each level. Fair warning, these achievements for getting the stars will account for most of the time needed to complete the game:

Mastermind

Complete all levels.

Mastermind

Perfection Achieved

Earn all achievement stars for all seven sets.

Perfection Achieved

The only things you'll need to complete this game, achievement-wise, are some video guides and some tape or heavy things to hold down a couple keys on your keyboard. Some methods to do this will be included in the Story Walkthrough portion.

Tinker (GFWL) - Story walkthrough

Follow the path of the guide below to ensure the fastest route to completing all of the achievements.

Tutorial Set

Tinker dances whenever it completes a level. An achievement should unlock right after you complete the first level in the tutorial set. No problem, easy 10 GS :).

Dance Tinker, Dance!

Reach the win circle for the first time.

Dance Tinker, Dance!

Finishing a level on your last step isn't all that hard. It can be done purposely on any level by wasting moves doing the switch-smack motion (spacebar) and/or turning around before ending the level. The video below by BombasticLewis shows an easy way to do this on the first level of the tutorial set.

Close Call

Beat a level on your last step.

Close Call

You'll get "Speedy Robot" after completing five levels with at least 20 seconds under par, which will probably be the first five levels of the tutorial set since they really are not challenging at all. For video guides on how to complete these levels, please refer to "A Strong Start".

Speedy Robot

Beat 5 levels with 20 seconds under par.

Speedy Robot

Now finish all the levels in the tutorial set for this achievement. You don't need to obtain all the stars for the levels; although, it is recommended you get all the stars in a level before moving on. For video guides on obtaining the requirements for each of the tutorial levels, please refer below to "A Strong Start".

Knowledge Is Power

Complete the tutorial.

Knowledge Is Power

You'll need to meet all requirements for all 20 levels in the tutorial set to get "Strong Start". The below video by compgeek36 provides solutions on how to get all three stars for each level. Note that other ways than the video are possible.

A Strong Start

Earn all achievement stars in the Tutorial Set.

A Strong Start

Set 1

To clear up any confusion, the tutorial set DOES NOT count towards "Stamina". You will need to meet all requirements in all 20 levels for any set. I recommend doing them in order, which is why the following videos by compgeek36 provide solutions on what to do to get all three stars for each level in Set 1. Note that different ways are possible to complete some levels.

Stamina

Earn all achievement stars in one set.

Stamina

For the next achievement you will need to do the switch-smack motion 200 times. You don't actually need to hit a switch, just the motion. Simply load up any level and press the spacebar until you run out of energy. Now reload that level and repeat until you've done it 200 times. When you get to 200, you need to FINISH a level for it to unlock. If you quit the game and finish a level the next time you play it, you won't get this achievement. This achievement may unlock while attempting the Tutorial levels.

After getting "Smack My Switch Up" you will be 200 moves closer to the next achievements which require you to move Tinker 1,000 and 10,000 times respectively.

For the best success, do this in one shot. Go on any level with a lot of starting moves. I prefer Set 1 Level 19, as you start with 100 moves. After you start the level, weigh down the spacebar (personally, I used a stapler but anything heavy enough to depress the key will work). Now that you have this done, Tinker should keep using energy and the level should keep restarting since the spacebar is held down. Wait 2-3 hours. There is no way to know how far you've progressed except to FINISH the level and see if the achievements unlocks. Set up the space bar method again for a shorter amount of time if it didn't pop. Take note that you are still connected to LIVE. Even if it pops you will not get credit unless you are connected.

Robot Controller

Take 1000 turns.

Robot Controller

Robot Master

Take 10,000 turns.

Robot Master

Set 2

You'll need to meet all requirements in all 20 levels for any two sets. Doing the sets in order, you should be on Set 2 at this point. This video by compgeek36 shows one way to get all three stars for each level on Set 2, alternate ways are possible on the levels.

Endurance

Earn all achievement stars in two sets.

Endurance

Set 3

You'll need to meet all requirements in all 20 levels for any three sets. Doing the sets in order, you should be on Set 3 at this point. If you need help, the following videos from compgeek36 show one way to get all three stars for each level on Set 3:

Determination

Earn all achievement stars in three sets.

Determination

Set 4

Completing 71 levels will get you "Over the Hill". You don't need to meet the requirements in them; however, it is recommended you do. Note that tutorial levels do not count towards this achievement. If you're doing the sets in order, you should get this achievement after you complete the 11th level on Set 4.

Over The Hill

Complete 71 levels.

Over The Hill

These videos by compgeek36 will help you with Set 4 and work towards the "Resilience" achievement:

Set 5

For "Resilence" you will need to meet all requirements in all 20 levels for any five sets. If you've finished Set 4 you will need to complete Set 5 for the achievement. The following videos by compgeek36 show one way to get all three stars for each level on Set 5:

Resilience

Earn all achievement stars in five sets.

Resilience

Set 6

Stay on track for getting all requirements for every level in the game and you should be in good shape for "Perfection Achieved". Doing the sets in order, you should be on Set 6 right now. You'll need to complete Set 6 and Set 7 for "Perfection Achieved". The videos below from compgeek36 show one way to get all three stars for each level on Set 6.

Set 7

The following videos from compgeek36 will finish out the requirements for "Perfection Achieved":

Perfection Achieved

Earn all achievement stars for all seven sets.

Perfection Achieved

The only thing different between "Mastermind" and "Perfection Achieved" is that you don't need to meet all the requirements on all the levels to get "Mastermind". You should get "Mastermind" around the same time as "Perfection Achieved" given that you are following the guide closely which is highly recommended.

Mastermind

Complete all levels.

Mastermind

Well, there it is! Your full 200 GS and improved TA Score!
