At a first glance, I was unsure of what to make of Mode7Games newest addition to the Indie roster. What I did see was bright and vibrant colours accompanied by what is undeniably stick men and women in a futuristic Tokyo, with guns aplenty. It certainly piqued my curiosity and I wanted to discover what Tokyo 42 is all about.
Framed for a murder, a stranger contacts you in your apartment and tells you to escape, and naturally you are looking for revenge. You are to become an assassin and do whatever is required to seek justice for yourself, and take down a huge corporation bent on controlling the populous through Nano Meds. The latter allows people o essentially live forever, in a mundane existence oblivious to what's really taking place around them. A conspiracy theorists wet dream for the story it is then, but what about the rest of it?
There is a lack of voice acting, and instead you will have all contact via text based messages from your allies in game from your handler and other NPC's for Story and Side missions. There's more than just go here and kill this person or groups though, as you an earn certain rankings dependant on your actions during a mission. Stealth and despatching all enemies give different ranks, but can you combine them to become the ultimate assassin? Not on the same level as the iconic Agent 47 but I sincerely doubt the idea was to compete. Missions won't be available immediately, as you need to work hard earning them Reputation Points to unlock harder missions, ensuring you perfect and home your skills to be the very best. You will need it, as a single bullet will kill you, resulting in being sent back to your last checkpoint. Infuriating at first, as death will seek you out faster than Usain Bolt completes a 100m sprint. Perseverance is vital within the corrupt world of Tokyo, and once you master the art of sneaking with your Katana, you will soon become the assassin you've always dreamed of. Or just whip out the Minigun and grenades and act a little crazy.
The best way to describe Tokyo 42 would be to say that the original Syndicate had a love child with GTA and smothered it with a Mirror's Edge paint job. This helps it stand out, and with an isometric viewpoint which can be adjusted to 8 individual views, you'd think it would all be fine. But the camera can be your worst enemy in the game, as you are unable to have a free moving camera, nor are you able to zoom in or out. Really the only concern I had with my 12+ hours with it. But given its a major component with any game, it loses points.
Collectables litter the games world, and bringing up the map will display most if not all of them. The trouble being is how to get to them, as some are a fair away from the plays area atop buildings in the distance. Looks like it's time to find out how to unlock the hidden portals. When you're not searching for a way to collect everything site, you can play some missions to earn extra cash to buy weapons to expand your arsenal, and the usual weapons you'd expect to find are there including a pea shooter and bananas. An inside joke perhaps? Either way, combining the Katana with stealth and an energy powered cloaking device makes infiltration far easier when you remember that it's an option. Graphics
The clean and smooth visuals of a futuristic Tokyo utilising the Unity engine give Tokyo 42 a sharp appearance. No drop in frame rate, combined with a pleasant interpretation of the famous Japanese city are easy on the eyes. Text did appear a bit too small for me personally, but I do require glasses.Audio
An ambient track plays as you run, sneak and occasionally parkour your way around the city. With its futuristic melody, it makes the frustration of repeatedly meeting your demise a little bit easier.Gameplay
The isometric camera will take some time to familiarise yourself with, but given enough time, you will be able to adjust controlling your protagonist. Planning your route and general observation with your trusty binoculars will soon be second nature. Replayability
There is plenty of hours to invest, especially if you're after all the achievements. Collectables strewn across the map, 25 Story missions and 67 Side mission with Roninja rankings to obtain will keep you busy for many hour. Its an unforgiving game that will punish you for being to care free, and with its steep learning curve you'll be sure to face a hefty challenge. Achievements
This is a game where you will need to essentially 100% everything in the game. From obtaining every collectable, to purchase all weapons, suits, cats (yes, really) and tourist sights Tokyo 42 is sure to keep you busy. Not an easy completion by any means, but thankfully there are some easy Story progression related achievements and some miscellaneous to unlock along the way. Perfect game to up your ratio. Summary
Tokyo 42 is a breath of fresh air, and whilst the camera can be infuriating at times, it's the only issue I encountered with my time as an assassin. I strongly recommend that you at least consider it as a purchase. If not today, then maybe a future sale will entice you. The price is reasonable, considering the amount of hours it will require to reach that magical 1000g on offer. Hopefully Mode7 will continue to bring us more high quality games or fingers crossed, DLC. There is scope for adding new missions or even a new location. Time will tell.
