3. World At Arms (WP) Story walkthroughUpdate notes

When you start the game, you’ll get a quick tutorial on how to buy buildings, collect money from buildings, train troops, and have a battle. You'll have an opportunity to save 2 extra gold stars during this tutorial. There are three points where they want you to spend a gold star to speed things along. The first is because you’re short of coins so you have to spend that Star, but the other two are to eliminate the time delay. Because those delays are only 30 seconds long, you can just wait it out and start the game with 12 gold stars instead of 10. The main story campaign will also be introduced at this point as well as how to destroy power-ups in battle.

You definitely want to focus on destroying any power-ups fired at you or parachuted down to the enemy, (which would give them a boost). In addition to getting a combat advantage, there is an achievement for destroying 300 power-ups in combat. There is no way to “hurry” that achievement along so you better start now.

When you finish those tutorial lessons, you’ll unlock your first achievement of the game:

Ready for Duty

Successfully complete training.

Ready for Duty

It is not clear how combat works in the game, so here’s a better explanation: Each unit has an attack and a defense rating. You might think that both are used in combat, but that’s not actually the case. If you are the one attacking, then only the attack rating of the unit is used. The defense rating is ignored. If you are being attacked, (which only happens when someone else is attacking your base), the defense rating is used.

Since the attacker has a large advantage in combat anyway, (they can choose whether to attack, pick the right troops, call for allies, and use power-ups), and the penalty for being successfully invaded is minimal, you always want to get the units with the highest attack rating.

Units also have a health rating, which you might think is the amount of damage they can take in combat before being killed. Instead it controls when the unit has to be replaced. After each combat action, a unit loses 10 health points. If that unit was killed during the combat, it loses 20 health points instead. If the unit’s health points are reduced to 0 and it was killed in that combat, the unit is lost. This basically means that you need to continuously replace your units even if you’re always winning battles.

The next step is to build up your base. You can also complete more of the main story battles as those are likely the only ones you can reliably win at this point and they don’t cost much oil, (and you can’t really improve your oil supply until level 8).

During one of those introductory battles, you’ll likely win a battle without any of your troops being killed to unlock:

Flawless Victory

Win a battle without losing any units.

Flawless Victory

If not, just go back and play the first campaign mission using much more powerful troops.

Focus on completing quests as they provide a good route of “what to do now” to help build up your base, and are a great way of gaining coins, gold stars, and experience.

When you reach level 3, you can start building wind power plants which really helps expand your base.

At level 5, you can build mechanical vehicles. These are usually more powerful, (but a little more expensive), than infantry units. While there is an achievement related specifically to infantry units, we can get to that later.

You’re also introduced to unit fusion about now. This lets you merge two units into a more powerful unit. Merging two basic units gets you a level 2 unit. Merging two level 2’s gets you a level 3 and two 3’s make a 4. A level 3 unit is about twice as powerful as the base unit and the extra cost to get to level 3 is pretty small, so I would definitely recommend doing this often. Build 4 vehicle plants, build 4 of the same vehicle, then merge them into two levels 2’s and then into a single level 3.

The cost to merge from 3’s into 4’s is vastly more expensive. While that unit is more powerful, the forced deterioration of units means that any investment is short-lived. I found that spending the money on power-ups and additional units was more worthwhile.

At level 8, you can build oil storage facilities which lets you greatly increase your reserve of oil. This is vital if you want to start attacking other players due to the amount of oil required.

At level 9, you can build a weapons workshop which lets you build power-ups. I found the attack power-ups to be the most useful in general. (Especially when you unlock Nuclear Strike.) Have your workshops be building power-ups continuously as there is an achievement for that.

Now that you have power-ups, use three power-ups in the same battle and win to unlock:

Increasing the Odds

Win a battle using 3 or more power-ups.

Increasing the Odds

Sometime around now, you’ll have collected 300,000 coins in total to unlock:

Money Maker

Collect 300,000 coins.

Money Maker

At level 10, you’re eligible to join a Faction. If you don’t know a friend that is already on a Faction, you can always just browse the list of factions looking for ones that are Open, (so you can join without needing to be invited), and aren’t at their 50 player limit. Factions are always looking for more members since more is better.

Joining a faction has several benefits. Anyone in the faction is automatically considered an ally. Every 24 hours, you can visit an ally’s base and tap on the fires there to collect 5 hearts. This is the most reliable way to get hearts. Every 24 hours, you can give a gift to all of your allies. While this doesn’t directly benefit you, hopefully you will get gifts back which can be hearts or oil. Every 24 hours, you can call an ally for backup which will cause one additional unit, (whose strength is based on the level of the ally), to join your forces in battle. Lastly, there are faction events with nice rewards that you can only participate in if you are in a faction. You might luck into some nice rewards riding the coattails of your faction.

At some point along here, you’ll be introduced to Prometheus. While you can spend 100 gold stars at any point to unlock it, around level 10 I was offered a chance to unlock it at a big discount. That discount still cost more stars than I had earned at the time so I didn’t take advantage of it. But since you earn special buildings from some quests, and when you sell a building that costs gold stars to build you get gold stars back, it might be possible to reach the discounted price by liquidating those buildings.

At level 11, you can build a Geothermal plant which is way better than the Wind plants. As long as you have space, you can keep the Wind plants, but you should look to replace them as soon as possible. Once you start building Geothermal plants, you’ll quickly reach 1500 total energy. This is the total output of all of your power plants – not the “free energy” on the status bar. This unlocks:

Energy Guzzler

Accumulate 1,500 energy.

Energy Guzzler
Discontinued - These achievements can no longer be obtained due to closed servers, a bad patch, or other unusual circumstances.

At level 13, you can build air units. I generally found it easier to win air battles than ground battles. Maybe it’s just because other players focus on building ground units instead of air units.

By now, (possibly earlier), you might be strong enough to actually take on other players and they will have rewards big enough to make it worthwhile. When you go to the attack screen, you want to look for three things: Attack rating of the terrains, a shield icon, and the player's level. If you click attack, it will show you the attack rating for each of the three terrains. You likely won’t have underwater units, so ignore the bottom row and look just at ground and air. These ratings are relative to the current strength of your units and their units, (rather than just based on level). Hunt for 1 and 2 ratings as you should be able to win those easily. It is possible to win against a 3 rating, but it is not guaranteed. You likely won’t win against a 4 or 5 unless you use a lot of power-ups.

Now check for a shield icon beneath the player next to their rating. If the icon is there, it means that they currently have protection and can’t be invaded. You can still attack them, but the main benefit of attacking someone is the privilege of invading their base.

You'll also want to check their level. The higher their level, the more likely their base is to have better buildings to loot. Note that we’ve already checked their combat rating – a high level person is more likely to have a high combat rating. But if they have a low rating, it means that they are easy to defeat regardless of their level.

So find a soft target, attack, and invade. Always make sure you have enough oil to invade before you attack. Invasion costs twice as much as attacking does, (and both costs go up every 10 levels), so if it costs 6 oil to attack right now, make sure you have 18 oil to cover the cost of both attacking and invading.

If you win the attack, click the invade button at the bottom of the results screen. You’ll see their current base and have a 3x3 square you can drag anywhere on the map. It will automatically be positioned over an income building, but you want to explore their base to find the highest income building they have and loot it. Note that while Chemical Labs are the most efficient buildings, the amount you get by invading is based on the “gross” output; so many of the larger, less efficient buildings pay more when invading. And fortunately, there are plenty of people that build them for you to loot. You’ll learn to recognize chemical labs, universities, and training grounds pretty quickly. At higher levels, you’ll start to see the orbital surveillance and ammunition plant. Rarely, (and against really high level players), you can stumble across a water park or casino.

Keep an eye out for a sports stadium. This is NOT the training grounds that you can buy that looks like a building with a running track around the outside. This looks like an open air sports stadium complete with giant scoreboard. This was apparently a promotional item given out during an event. As such, even low-level people who played when it was available can have it. This thing produces a giant amount of coins – you could loot over 200,000 from it! Until you’re regularly invading level 40 people, this is going to be the best payout you’re likely to find.

Another unusual building is a structure that looks like a pair of teardrop shaped buildings with a snowflake on top. This also appears to be a promotional item but it also pays hundreds of thousands of coins.

Here's an important note about underwater battles. You don’t unlock the underwater base until level 28, but it is possible to get an underwater unit as an event or lottery reward. If this happens, you can use this unit to mercilessly exploit other players who likely have no underwater units at all, so you’ll be fighting a single sub of the weakest variety. However, when you reach level 28 and get the underwater base, attacking with underwater units will result in invading their underwater base, not their surface base. You can steal Thorium this way, but because underwater base buildings are so expensive, it is quite likely that anyone you invade between level 28 and 35 might not have anything to loot. Even if they do, your ability to take Thorium is limited by the number of storage structures you have.

Invading other people is the best way to supplement your coins. Also, I believe the more you attack others, the more likely you are to appear on the board to be attacked by other people. And you need that to happen.

When someone attacks you successfully, you’ll get a message at your headquarters and have the option to take revenge. Click on your headquarters, switch to reports and look at the combat tab. The list of people who tried to attack you will be listed, and if you were defeated, a button to take revenge will be there. You need to take revenge 100 times. Normally, once you attack them back, it changes to avenged and you can’t attack them anymore, but there is a way around this.

The quick way works if you have no submarines at all. Choose revenge, and then choose underwater as the terrain. You’ll then get an error that says you don’t have any underwater units, but this attempt counts as an attack. Repeat this 100 times.

If you do have underwater units, (or you can’t get the above trick to work for you), choose revenge and on the unit selection screen, quit the game. When you restart, you’ll have lost the oil you used to attack, but it will count as an attack and the person will still be available to be attacked again. Revenge candidates never seem to get removed from the list, (unless you right click and choose ‘Dismiss’), so you can wait for your oil to recharge and attack again. This method takes a little longer but is more reliable.

Regardless of which way you do it, these will let you unlock this achievement without having to wait for 100 different people to attack you:

Revenge!

Attack 100 enemies who have attacked you.

Revenge!

Next achievement to knock out involves setting bounties on players. On the attack screen, you can pick any player there and choose to put a bounty on them. The amount of the bounty is deducted from your total, but if you defeat someone with a bounty, you are paid that amount as a bonus. The smallest bounty is 100 coins and you need to place 100 bounties. Thus, a total of 10,000 coins is required. You should have that by now.

If you run out of people to place bounties on, wait a few hours for the attack list to refresh. When you’ve placed all of the bounties, you’ll unlock:

Wanted

Set a bounty on 100 enemies.

Wanted

Keep working through the game naturally. When you reach level 20 you’ll unlock:

Moving Up the Ranks

Reach level 20.

Moving Up the Ranks
Discontinued - These achievements can no longer be obtained due to closed servers, a bad patch, or other unusual circumstances.

Level 20 also unlocks the development facility that lets you build offensive and defensive structures. Build 2 or 3 of them and start producing watch towers. Each one takes 2 hours to build and you need to build 100 of them. When production is complete, you’ll be asked to place it on the map. If you don’t have enough energy available or if you hit cancel, the item will go into your stash and it will not count. (But you can place it from the stash to make it count.) You don’t have to keep all 100 – you can sell each one immediately after you place it. While this can be automated with the process below, because each time through the loop takes two hours, it is a real pain to set up. Since it’s only 100, (which is only 33 iterations if you build three factories), you will hopefully unlock this naturally before we get to the grinding section. When you have built and placed 100, you’ll unlock:

Safety First

Build 100 defensive structures.

Safety First

By now, you’ll have gotten 20 completed social quests. A social quest is one of the quests that involve other players, such as attacking or invading other players, taking revenge, helping allies, or using a distress call. Usually these quests award hearts instead of gold stars or items, but not always. (The quest I unlocked this on was for invading bases. It didn't award hearts, but was still considered a social quest.)

Following Orders

Complete 20 social quests.

Following Orders

Around this time, I had earned 100 gold stars from quests and was able to buy Prometheus. Start upgrading him, (which requires both coins and hearts), as much as possible. He is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Continue fighting opponents, invading, building up, and so on.

Hopefully, through all of your battles, you’ll be close to having destroyed 300 power-ups in combat. The only way to make progress on this is to keep attacking and hope that power-ups are used against you. You can’t force this. You want to watch for the quick missiles, (slash them), missile clusters aiming towards your units, (click on the red units), an EMP surge, (click on the ball of static in front of your units), nukes, (click on the large, slow moving unit descending from the sky), and anything that boosts your opponent, (click on the crate parachuting down to your enemies).

Having power-ups used against you seems random. But the longer the battle lasts, (which usually means that the sides are more evenly matched), the more likely that one will be used. When you get to 300, you’ll unlock:

Sharpshooter

Destroy 300 power-ups in combat.

Sharpshooter

At this point, you have only achievements that can be directly ground out and you’ll be at a high enough level to grind them out efficiently. It just may take some time. You might have gotten some of the rest through natural gameplay, or if you’re going to keep playing the game “for real” you can unlock them later naturally. But if you’re looking to unlock them as quickly as possible, read on.

An easy one first – build 100 boosters. If you don’t have this already, find an open space and start building roads. Each road square costs only 5 coins so it only costs 500 coins total to get to 100. If you don’t have enough space, you can sell your road squares and rebuild.

City Architect

Build 100 boosters.

City Architect

You’ll want to get a macro recording tool at this point. The one I used is TinyTask, which can be downloaded from http://vtaskstudio.com/support.php. It’s free and can be used to record both keyboard and mouse input control. It does not record touch, so be sure to use the mouse when recording.

We’re going to use TinyTask to automate the remaining achievements that you don’t already have. Here’s a quick lesson in how it works: When you start it up, you can assign a recording and playback hotkey. The default is CTRL-ALT-R and CTRL-ALT-P. Alternatively, you can choose Print Screen, F8, and F12. If you’re using the Project My Screen app, only Print Screen and F8 seem to work reliably as the other sequences are intercepted by the Project app. If you’re natively using the Win8 game, then any of the hotkeys should work fine. Choose whichever hotkeys you want to use.

Choose “Set Repeat Count” and choose the number of times you want it to run. (You can also choose “Continuous Playback” to have it repeat forever, but since these tasks do cost coins, you should limit it to the number you need.) Switch to World at Arms. Hit the recording hotkey and do the task you want to repeat. Hit the recording hotkey again, making sure you’re at the same state as when you started. Then hit the playback hotkey and it should repeat the same actions again.

In my experience, the keystroke that starts and stops recording and playback is sometimes interpreted by the game as a “click” so it is best to make sure that the cursor is located in a place where a click doesn’t do anything. Starting the recording loop in a menu seems to be more reliable as well. For example, when building units, start the loop on the purchase screen instead of on the world map.

It can help to move the buildings involved in the macros to an isolated part of your map so your macro doesn’t click on something like an income bubble from a neighboring building. Also, you’ll want to keep an eye on your progress as it seems easy for something seemingly random to disturb the replay.

The first achievement is for building 200 air units. If you used air attacks a lot during the game and merged units to create level 3 units, you likely have this naturally. If not, the cheapest air unit is the Fighter which builds in 5 minutes for 410 coins. Record a macro where you buy a Fighter from each of your factories. (Safest to start the macro while on the purchase screen). Wait the 5 minutes for each to be built. Collect the fighters and enter the purchase menu again. Repeat until you have 200 total fighters produced:

Air Supremacy

Build 200 aerial units.

Air Supremacy

Next is for training 500 infantry units. If you’re like me and primarily used armored vehicles for ground attacks, you could be a long way away from this one. Fortunately the cheapest infantry unit is Militia, building in only 10 seconds for 90 coins. Record a macro buying and then collecting a Militia unit until you have 500 trained:

Training Day

Train 500 infantry units.

Training Day

Having a large pile of Militia is useful for the next step. Play the second campaign mission, "The Chase". Start recording now and choose 6 militia to fight. You should easily win this fight, but will probably lose some militia in the process. When the fight ends, allow plenty of time (maybe a minute) to account for variation in the duration of the mission and choose “attack again”. Stop the recording and start playback.

Each victory counts as another campaign mission completed. Each battle costs only 2 oil, so you should have plenty of oil to get through all of the missions. While I believe the intent of getting 375 victories is to complete every campaign mission in the game the 5 times needed to mark it ‘completed’, you can repeat the second mission over and over again to unlock:

War Hero

Win 375 campaign battles.

War Hero

Also, you are likely to lose at least one or two militia units each time, (or more if the computer uses a nuke). Note that “killed” here means being killed in the battle, not losing your forces. Hence the same militia can get killed several times before needing to be replaced. When your militia have been killed 1,000 times, you’ll unlock:

Don't Give Up

Lose 1,000 infantry units.

Don't Give Up

We use the second mission, not the first, because the first mission is too easy to win and you won’t lose enough units. If you get to 1,000 units killed before 375 victories, you can turn on Quick Battle which will automatically use your strongest units and skip the combat animation. You can easily click your way through to victories.

If you get to 375 victories before 1000 units lost, switch to a harder campaign story, (but still one that is early in order to keep oil costs down). You’ll lose almost every time, which will get you six deaths per combat.

The next macro is for attacking other players. Even if you’ve been attacking a lot, you’re probably short of the 1000 required for this achievement. We’re going to take a slightly different approach here. If you actually fight another player and lose, you lose ratings and you might not want that.

Instead, start recording, go to the attack board, and choose any player and any terrain. At the screen where you select units, quit the app using the standard Alt-F4 keyboard shortcut. Go to the start menu and re-launch the game. When it has started back up, stop recording.

The aborted attack still counts as an attack, but the only thing it has cost you is some oil. Because this costs more oil, (depends on your level), you might have to stop and refuel every so often. Repeat until you have 1000 attacks to unlock:

Blitzkrieg

Attack 300 enemy players.

Blitzkrieg

Warmonger

Attack other players 1,000 times.

Warmonger

Now we’re going to construct 300 power-ups. Again, hopefully you’ve been following the advice to continuously build power-ups so you’re quite close on this one already. The cheapest power-up is First Aid which costs 300 coins and takes 15 minutes to build. Record a macro where you build a First Aid in each of your weapons workshops. Wait 15 minutes for them to get ready and harvest them. Because of the length of the macro, this can be tricky to set up correctly since if you don’t get it quite right, you’ll have to wait another 15 minutes to try again. Repeat until you’ve reached 300 total:

Powering Up

Construct 300 power-ups.

Powering Up

The last, and most arduous, achievement is collecting from your headquarters. The achievement description makes this sound so easy, but the actual requirement is to collect from it 5,000 times. (The achievement is flagged as buggy because of the incorrect description.) While your headquarters has a coin that appears over it every hour when it’s full, you can go into the headquarters menu and choose “collect” at any time. If you actually waited for it to be full every time, this would take almost 30 weeks.

Record a macro, click on the HQ and choose collect. Put this on repeat and 5,000 loops later, (which is still 4 hours if each loop is 3 seconds), you’ll unlock:

Finance Manager

Collect from your headquarters.

Finance Manager

Congratulations: you’ve conquered all of the achievements in this game. It’s up to you know whether you want to keep expanding your base or to retire from service in style.
