PermalinkG-Unit 8: Wreckateer, Clive Barker's Jericho & ACA Blast
This time, RTDL mostly guided my progress and saw me revisiting some stuff on the 360, as well as some scrambling around for GTASC bonuses.

Because the team was teetering on the edge of the cutoff last week, I also pulled the trigger on Minecraft (iOS), grabbing a handful of stupidly high ratio achievements thanks to helpful achievement worlds. I'll be using it as an easy score game if we look in trouble again, and have the Kindle and Android available to me eventually too.

The most recent bonus was for getting 6,000GS as a team. Seeing as I had so many recently dived ACA games lying around, I did a blast on those over a couple of nights, grabbing achievements in ACA NEOGEO AERO FIGHTERS 2, ACA NEOGEO ALPHA MISSION II, ACA NEOGEO ART OF FIGHTING, ACA NEOGEO BASEBALL STARS PROFESSIONAL, ACA NEOGEO BURNING FIGHT, ACA NEOGEO METAL SLUG, ACA NEOGEO SAMURAI SHODOWN III, ACA NEOGEO THE KING OF FIGHTERS '94, ACA NEOGEO SUPER SIDEKICKS & ACA NEOGEO SUPER SIDEKICKS 2. As I found with the other ACA games I've played, they were more difficult than the ratios suggested. A few could be cheesed for easy points but I wasn't able to complete any of them. I'm sure I'll come back around to them at some point.

Also, my buddy and GTASC team mate UselessFATDOG was playing Aliens: Colonial Marines and preparing to do an Ultimate Badass difficulty run. I hadn't played the game in years and had considered it done really, but the lure of playing with my friend and getting him to basically carry me through it was overwhelming. We started by blasting out the hard difficulty on the Stasis Interrupted DLC, which gave me the completion in that. We're now working through the main campaign, followed by multiplayer and challenges. It's still a pretty bad game, but fun with friends.

Wreckateer popped up on my RTDL list so I thought it would be a good opportunity to jump back into it, especially now I have my 360 and Kinect reinstated after a couple of years in storage. Despite its bad rep, and admittedly some shaky tracking and bad games, there are some real gems out there for the original Kinect. Wreckateer is one of them, partly because it doesn't over complicate things so it's hard to get it wrong. It's kind of like an Angry Birds mechanically because you fire different types of bombs at goblins and their castles, aiming to get as much damage and destruction as possible. Bombs are fired by simply moving your arms to aim and pulling back to fire. Different bombs have different extra powers which are enabled by lifting your arms up and you can also wave your arms to try and direct the bombs a bit mid air. It's all done in a fun and colourful aesthetic with some good humoured writing and is overall very enjoyable. I particularly liked that I could use my Chewie Avatar in the game. Other Avatar games often take off the Chewie costume so I can't be the real me.

I'd previously managed to get about halfway through the campaign so pushed my way through the rest of the levels over a couple of nights, including the two additional DLC worlds. Because I wasn't necessarily aiming for the completion, I wasn't killing myself score wise and was happy to get Bronzes and Silvers for the most part. I did, however, aim to grab as many of the miscellaneous achievements along the way, Most of them are for doing shots with specific combinations of bonuses, which are easily done thanks to a few great solutions on site recommending the best level options. With all levels done and a bunch of other stuff besides, that more than fulfils my CitM criteria so I can put it to bed. The RTDL achievement that got me playing it however was for destroying a massive 1,000 goblins. When all was said and done I sat at only 374 and really didn't fancy the grind to do the rest without also aiming for the completion so I ended up passing it over.

Another RTDL achievement popped up for Clive Barker's Jericho, which is on my Gains list so was already planned for doing soon but kept falling to the bottom of the list thanks to being non-BC on the 360. Seeing as I was on the 360 for Wreckateer anyway though, it made sense to jump in. I'm a fan of Clive Barker since having Hellraiser and Candyman on VHS as a (too) young one. I also enjoyed some of his lesser known stuff like Nightbreed and Lords of Illusion, flawed and weird as they are. I also played and enjoyed a bit of his Undying game back when I played on PC. Clive Barker's Jericho takes his dark occult, hellish sensibilities and applies them to a first person shooter. It's pretty dated and clunky but has some interesting ideas. On top of the more standard squad control mechanics, there's also the ability to possess and control different members of your squad at will. Each squad member has their own weapons and occult powers to use to help in different situations. They also function as lives because if the one you're in dies you can hop into another one until they're all dead.

I'm near the end of Act 4 (of 5) so fairly close to the completion. It's relatively straightforward with most achievements being story related, though many are for completing chapters in Hard mode so it's best to just do a Hard run straight off the bat. A few achievements require you to complete levels without being incapacitated. As someone who's not great at games, I've had to make a few attempts at those, but mostly the tactic of hanging back and using Black's Ghost Bullet and Grenade Launcher works wonders. The rest of the achievements are cumulative for doing certain things, including the aforementioned Ghost Bullet and explosive kills, so that tactic also helps minimise the grind on those. Overall the game is grimy, clunky and dated. The story is also meandering, overcomplicated, dark and weird, so typical Barker. Off-putting for some, but I enjoyed it well enough, though I did find it a bit derivative of the Hell sections of The Darkness, which released in the same year.

PermalinkG-Unit 7: The Council, Elea & Random Challenge Hopping
This time things were a bit random and bitty but I still managed to get stuff done. Primarily I put time into the first episode of The Council because it has an achievement on my RTDL list, appears on my Gains challenge and includes a few "Level" achievement for the GTASC bonus. I struggled to find other decent games to go for the bonus on. I had a bunch with the right achievement type but none that would see me getting enough in a shortish time. I was originally going to start up Hero Express, which I'd just picked up in the sale but then KinectKid333 pointed out the Kinect Sports Gems games as quick, easy and cheap options. I decided to grab two of them, Kinect Sports Gems: Prize Driver and Kinect Sports Gems: Reaction Rally, to knock the rest of the achievements needed in one night. Once I hit the magic 15 I stopped because I was tired, but I'll go back to them soon to wrap them up. While I'm at it I may grab as much in the other Sports Gems games too because they've been on my wishlist for a while. The piddling amount of GS is a bit off-putting but I'm not one to worry about that too much. Maybe after I'm out of GTASC.

I decided to spend the rest of my time trying to wrap up my Gamertag challenge for the month, Freamwhole, as well as getting a few more RTDL gimmies. That mostly meant jumping quickly in and out of Laserlife, Echoes of the Fey: The Fox's Trail, Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles, Beholder Complete Edition & Metropolis: Lux Obscura. Elea was on the list but instead of dipping in and out I decided to do a full playthrough because it's a bit glitchy and you're recommended to do it in one sitting (details below). I also put a bit more time and effort into Halo 3: ODST too because I'd already finished the story but had quite a lot of missed miscellaneous stuff. So as well as grabbing Stunning for RTDL I also knocked out 5 other relatively easy ones. That means I've completed the requirements for Chewie in the Middle for it and it can safely be relegated to the backlog.

On top of all of that I went back to ACA NEOGEO WORLD HEROES 2 again to finally get the High Score achievement I'd previously screwed up by doing Caravan Mode instead. I got it easily for the completion. I also spent a bit of time knocking out the shots on goal needed to finish AquaDome for Rocket League. All that's now left to complete the whole thing is the distance one, which is unfortunately still bugged.


The Council

I played through the first episode of The Council and discovered it to be a really intriguing adventure game where a group of historical figures are brought to an island as part of some sort of secret society. Missing people, murder, politics, religion and the occult all factor into the story as main character Louis tries to find his mother while interacting with the likes of Napoleon and George Washington. It's got a really cool aesthetic and atmosphere, and I'm intrigued to see how the story develops.

Unusually for an adventure game there's also RPG mechanics such as different classes, skills and a levelling system, which effect how your story progresses and the options available to you. The first episode requires multiple playthroughs due to branching choices so I'll go back to that soon and wrap it up. All the subsequent episodes are very simple completions though. I'm looking forward to working my way through it and discovering how the mystery develops.

Elea is yet another short first person sci-fi puzzle adventure game with a fairly obtuse story and some degree of pretension, joining the likes of The Station, Tacoma and Asemblance. Not that I'm complaining. If I were ever to make a game it would probably be a fairly pretentious, obtuse sci-fi puzzle adventure game. This time around we're on a space station in the future where the protagonist is part of a mission to discover what happened to a lost spaceship 13 years before. Intermixed with sequences aboard the station are sequences in the Mindscape, which is a cross between the Holodeck in Star Trek and the Inception devices, allowing users to relive memories and create imaginary worlds. In those we see how the protagonist's husband was on the original mission and she's determined to get down to the planet to find out, despite direct orders not to. Things get rather freaky in the Mindscape, leading to some pretty tripped out sequences.

Overall I quite enjoyed the game, thanks to its actually quite well developed story and visuals, though it is a bit muddled and the ending involves a bit too much backtracking. It's also hampered by its limitations as, rather than a living breathing space station, it all feels a little lifeless. Crew members just stay in one place and interactions with them are minimal. The voice acting is also uniformly wooden. It's also known to be fairly buggy, with achievements failing to unlock if you attempt them over multiple sittings. Aside from that, it's an easy completion thanks to the decent site walkthrough. It's supposedly only Episode 1 of a planned series so if more come I'll definitely check them out, particularly if they refine the experience and address some of the issues.

PermalinkG-Unit 6: Altered Beast, Count Lucanor & Mafia II
The RTDL mainly guided my progress this time as four achievements turned up in that from two games, The Count Lucanor and Mafia II. The first was on my Gains list and the second is a hangover from Champaigne so it made sense to knock them out. For the GTASC bonus, we only needed to grab an achievement with the word three or number 3 in the title. That was an easy one for me thanks to Three in a Row in Altered Beast. Seeing as the game was also on my Gimmie list, I ploughed ahead with it for the completion.

With all that done, and my position and bonus in GTASC secured, rather than moving onto the next big thing I dossed around in The Grand Tour Game, completing the first couple of episodes. I'm not a watcher of the show but it's a fun arcadey racer for the most part, though repetition does set in as you complete the same races multiple times across the different presenters.

I also returned to a couple of ACA games I couldn't quite finish back in a previous score blast. Unfortunately, I didn't fare much better as the completions continued to evade me, though I did grab an extra achievement in each. In ACA NEOGEO SAMURAI SHODOWN I can't quite get the timing right for Charlotte's spam move to consistently get high scoring wins, particularly in the second fight against the green dude. In ACA NEOGEO WORLD HEROES 2 I was doing better but kept falling juuuuust short of the 1.5 million needed in Caravan Mode. Then, this morning I realised the last achievement isn't even for Caravan Mode, it's for High Score Mode. What a moron. That should mean it's actually completely doable as I've had plenty for practise by this point and there's no timer to worry about. I'll try again tonight.


Altered Beast

Altered Beast is a classic retro game that I'm sure was amazing in its day but is severely dated these days. It's a side scrolling beat-em-up with the twist being that if you kill three white wolves in a level and collect the orbs they drop, then you turn into a super powered beastie to take on the boss. There are only a handful of levels so it's a very short game. Ordinarily it would probably be pretty challenging but, thanks to the save state options, it's a doddle because you can just reload if you take too much damage or miss a wolf.

The completion is just a case of playing through the game, with the only real challenge being to get to the third world without losing a life. Save state makes it trivial though. Everything else comes very naturally and there's a multiplayer achievement for just starting a game that I got easily thanks to AH101 community member HyRoad v2.

The Count Lucanor

I really loved The Count Lucanor, which is a small indie game I hardly knew anything about going in. It's an early Zelda style adventure with a retro 8-bit look (though cutscenes are 16-bit) that sees young Hans leaving his poverty stricken life in search of adventure and riches. He doesn't get very far before coming across some weird goings on and getting trapped in a castle full of puzzles, traps and an odd selection of characters including a decapitated goatherd and an old woman with a pigman for a son. Yup. It's dark, twisted and memorable with a great vein of humour running through it. The core of the game sees you exploring rooms in the castle, each with its own puzzle and/or trap to overcome in order to open a chest containing the letter to the name of a mischievous Kobold who's controlling things. Get all the letters, guess the name and you become the new Count and very rich. Maybe. It's all a little tricksy and nothing is as it seems.

It's not a long game and, with a guide (none on site yet but there are some in the wild), is relatively straightforward with a couple of achievements requiring some reloading for different outcomes. In particular there are five endings to get but these all come down to the final moments of the game so you can simply reload your last save to get them all done. There is a sort of speedrun achievement for figuring out the name another way, but again if you have a save from your first playthrough you can load that up and go straight for it. I really enjoyed the game, particularly for its tone and style, and it's definitely one of the better indies I've played. Looking forward to the devs next one, Yuppie Psycho, making it to Xbox too.

Mafia II

It's taken me a good long while to work through Mafia II with one thing or another. I'm glad RTDL gave me that final focused push to get it done. I was already quite far into the story but had really slowed down because of going for all the Wanted Posters alongside the final chapters in order to minimise the mind-numbing post-game grind. I think if it wasn't for those I'd have wrapped it up long ago. In general I don't mind collectables in games as long as the number isn't obnoxious and/or they add to the experience in some ways (e.g. by expanding the world or improving skills etc). Unfortunately in the case of the Wanted Psters they are both obnoxious in number (159) and pointless. I think it's made worse by the fact that the game really isn't a "proper" sandbox as the open world is virtually empty and you mostly just drive from mission to mission so there's no incentive to explore. The game's other collectible, the Playboy magazines, are also pointless but at least they are much fewer in number, appear within the missions themselves, and...well...nudity.

Overall, I enjoyed the game, especially as a big fan of the original. I felt the core characters, setting and atmosphere in particular shined. Details such as how as time progresses the cars also improve were neat, and I really liked the relationship with Vito and Joe, and the storyline centred on Henry and the Triad. However, I found the wider plot of the different Mafia factions and bosses you switch allegiances with to be fairly muddled as it becomes messy and difficult to follow who's loyal to who and who wants you dead. In particular, when the final confrontation comes around I couldn't actually remember who the big bad actually was in relation to all the other goings on. This could've been because of me dipping in and out of the game over a long time though. Apart from story progression, collectibles and doing it on Hard (which I thankfully did first time around), the rest of the mop up was easily done by reloading certain chapters and following helpful solutions. I still need to do the DLC but I'll hold that back for now, similar to BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360), mostly because I don't relish the ridiculous grind in one of them.

This time has been all about the TA Difference thanks to the Week 9 GTASC bonus for making it into the top 25% (around top 200). I figured I needed to shoot for around 3,000 TA Diff, with wrapping up Thief of Thieves being the obvious candidate to get me a good chunk of the way there. My teammates recommended InnerSpace as another great candidate so that pushed me over the the line without too much effort thankfully.

With the bonus secured, I knocked out another gimmie on the list which I had a goal to beat in August, The Gardens Between. Speaking of goals, I've cleared the deck on mine now a new RTDL list and Gamertag challenge has been generated. My goals are now built around games that appear in those lists and which are also G-Unit games so I'm stacking my challenges where possible. I've also created four new overall goals for the year having achieved my other ones: 100,000 GS, (a Fuuf), 150,000 TA, 3000 Achievements Won and 100 Completions. If I get all of them it would make it my best year ever for all four stats.

I also won a code for Railway Empire from Extra Life legend doughboyee and happily donated to the cause. It wasn't a game I wanted for myself but my 3 year old loves trains so I thought it would be a great game to try with him. He's recently picked up a controller and had a go driving in Forza Horizon 2 and The Grand Tour Game. I say driving, it was mostly just crashing into walls and other cars, but he enjoyed it. And he unlocked an achievement along the way. Start em early.

I'd completely ignored InnerSpace when it was announced and when I got GamePass because A) the ratio suggested it was difficult/long and B) it hadn't got anything to do with the classic Martin Short movie, which was a favourite of mine as a kid. When I was hunting for points this time, my teammates both corrected me on my first point because as it turns out it's a very easy and relatively short completion. The ratio is hugely inflated. Unfortunately, my second point remained true. The game has you playing as a flying bird robot thing who must navigate around a handful of different worlds solving puzzles by flying into them and collecting relics. It's a pretty chill experience because of the pastel design and relaxing atmosphere. There's something liberating about just flying around pretty visuals without worrying too much about action or conflict, kind of like ABZÛ in the sky. The eagle sections in AER - Memories of Old are also similar. In fact all three games have a similar aesthetic, atmosphere, story and mechanics crossover.

For the most part, completion comes from progressing through the story and collecting all the different relics and robot bird airframes, which video guides help with. Without them it would be very easy to get lost because the flying can sometimes get a little disorienting. The worlds are in orbs with sky, structures and sea in all directions so there is technically no "up" or "down". With guides though it's pretty straightforward. I'd recommend it for a nice and easy score boost, though it has now left GamePass.

Thief of Thieves

After sitting on it for a few weeks, this was the perfect opportunity to do the third and fourth volumes of Thief of Thieves for the completion. Like the first two volumes the game is a mix of animated cutscenes with dialogue choices and stealth gameplay sections where you have to sneak around running heists. I had broadly the same issues with the mechanics as they don't change, with frustrating camera choices meaning it's hard to see what guards are doing and some awfully buggy bits when NPCs try and walk through doorways. In one case this stopped the game dead as a vital character got trapped in a doorway until a handful of reloads finally unstuck them. How did that bug get through testing if it's so prevalent? Although elements of the story still felt very bleh, I actually warmed to it a bit more as it progressed. For instance, a character I'd initially hated changed my opinion a little as the layers unfolded. I was particularly impressed by how differently the story actually develops based on decisions that are made, with characters actually dying or surviving along the way.

Like InnerSpace the ratio belies an actually quite easy and relatively short completion, if not a very straightforward one. You need to reload a few levels and different points to get alternate outcomes, and then replay the later section of the game once or twice for a completely different path. Once you know what you're doing though, these subsequent reloads can be very quick to accomplish. I also had to replay a Volume 2 chapter to grab an achievement I missed the first time through, getting me the completion and a very healthy TA score with it. Even though I sound harsh, I'd probably still recommend trying the game if only for score. I think I'm more frustrated by the game because it clearly had the potential to be something actually really good but stumbled over the line with bugs and bad mechanics.

The Gardens Between is a lovely little puzzle game that is elevated by its charming aesthetic and simple yet poignant story. Each level has two children clambering over islands to a summit that you can control indirectly by progressing or rewinding time. As they progress, they encounter items they can interact with that will then further manipulate the timestream, allowing them to progress to the end. Each world is based on a thematic influence on the children's relationship as best friends and neighbours, from video games to stargazing, with giant items scattered around representing things related to the theme. It's a beautifully constructed little indie and a very quick and easy completion, particularly with a guide. Strongly recommend.

PermalinkRat Run: 3 Nights, 11 Ratalaika Games, Infinite Shame
I wasn't originally planning on doing another big score blitz for a while, instead focusing on my G-Unit campaign and various other challenges. Then the new team GTASC bonus came along and asked us to earn double the TA we'd earned the previous week. Unfortunately that was hot on the heels of a Solo bonus where you needed 2,000 GS. With us all grabbing that bonus, we ended last week at a very respectable 9,820 TA. That meant this week we needed a whopping 19,640 TA to secure the bonus. I could've probably got us a decent way there with all my outstanding 1-2 hour completions, but because I'll be away all weekend it would've been a struggle. Instead I decided to take the plunge and purchase eleven <1 hour Ratalaika specials and blast them out over three nights. In terms of a score haul it was very successful, but naturally I feel a bit dirty from the experience.

Combining that push with the decent TA I'd earned from completing Celeste earlier in the week, as well as grabbing all the trade related achievements in Rocket League thanks to help from CarpeAdam79, put me at over 13,000 TA before I went away. That left my teammates to pick up the slack over the weekend, which they seemed to do fairly easily.

Just keep repeating, it's just for fun, it's just for fun, it's just for fun...

To keep this as brief as possible, I'm going to provide a potted review on each game and carry over all my stats and what not to next time.

Bouncy Bullets is a first person shooter platformer where you need to jump around quite short levels and avoid getting hit by columns who shoot bullets out their mouths. It tries to introduce some colour mechanic where you can only shoot certain enemies with certain coloured bullets but it's so basic it's almost not worth it. It would be easy and breezy if the movement wasn't so sticky and slidey, leading to unintentional deaths through no fault of the player. Thankfully not too many levels are needed for the completion.

Gravity Duck involves you navigating short levels by hitting A and flipping gravity to avoid obstacles. It's very simplistic and basic and not particularly good. Also, you're a duck, for reasons completely unclear.

Hoggy2 is kind of a puzzle game where, like Gravity Duck, you hit A to flip the gravity of the character. You navigate short levels flipping up and down to hit blocks in a specific order, avoid enemies and eat fruit. In this case you're a blob thing called Hoggy, not a pig as the name would suggest.

In Iron Snout you actually do play as a pig. It's a beat em up but you don't actually move anywhere. Instead you just flick the movement stick to do attacks in different directions as enemies approach from all sides. It's mindless, repetitive and fairly fun for short periods. Unlike the other games, there aren't levels to progress in. In this case you need to get a decent combo going and grind out some stuff for the completion. Nothing too taxing though.

Take Megaman, reverse the genders of the main characters and then remove most of the quality and you've got METAGAL. It's a basic platformer that sees the titular android lady go on a quest to save her professor inventor and robot sisters. Meh.

Amongst all the pixelated platformers, this one was quite different. It's a puzzler that has you controlling a long yellow tube thing that has to cover the entire level by moving around it in a specific order, kind of like if Centipede was a puzzle game. It's actually ok.

Super Destronaut DX is nothing more than a basic Space Invaders / Galaga clone. You need to mostly do a bunch of challenges, which adds a bit of a twist to the standard gameplay and at least makes the completion not too mindless.

I have literally no idea what was going on in this game. It's kind of a shoot em up except instead of shooting, the main mechanic is to move two paddles side to side with the bumper buttons to collect hearts that move down the screen, avoid skulls and squash hamsters. Yup, squash hamsters. It is really weird and really not good in the least. Thankfully you only really need to play the first level and it's all over in like 10 minutes.

Super Wiloo Demake is a Super Mario Bros clone where you jump around collecting coins and squashing enemies. You also collect suits with various abilities to help you along the way. Mekabolt is yet another basic platformer where you shoot a gun to manipulate enemies and stuff. It's entirely unmemorable.

Paradox Soul is a sort of metroidvania where you explore a facility that's been overrun with evil robot zombie type things in an abandoned arctic facility. That makes it sound better than it is. I actually quite enjoyed it, simplistic as it was, but you only need to fight the first two bosses to complete the achievements and I didn't like it enough to see what happened next.
