G-Unit 12: GoNNer, Star Wars Battlefront, Human Fall Flat & Rare ReplayPermalink
GTASC bonus getting continued to dominate my gaming in the last couple of weeks, meaning I mostly sidelined other campaigns and goals, including G-Unit and RTDL. Both weeks required fairly high scoring, with this week in particular being unusual for me as it needed some hefty ratio gains. The likes of GoNNER, Child of Eden, Rare Replay and Deadfall Adventures got me some tasty solo scoring, but I also did a fair amount of multiplayer gaming, which I don't often dabble in.

As well as dipping into Star Wars Battlefront with UselessFATDOG, I did some AH101 community boosting with the angelic Wakapeil shepherding me through the entirety of Human Fall Flat (details below), and a group of AH101 boosters came together to start working on the Chaos stuff in Sunset Overdrive. They were great sessions, despite the glitchiness and annoying RNG of Sunset Overdrive. That one will be a weekly effort so I should have the game finished soon now I've also grinded out the Gold medal and other stuff I had remaining.

I'm now hoping that the next couple of GTASC bonuses are a little less intense so I can clear through a few things and make headway on RTDL, which this month is a scavenger hunt so you have to play the games and hope to stumble upon the right achievements.

I hadn't previously got any intention to touch GoNNER, partly because of the super high ratio, but when I needed the score I looked closer at the GamePass game. Although the game is by no means easy (for someone with low skills like me), there is still some serious ratio inflation going on. It's a very trippy little indie platformer where you blast through four short worlds made up of a handful of levels each. The challenge comes from having very limited lives and a roguelite element where dying sends you back to the start and every level is procedurally generated so you don't know exactly what you'll get in each run.

Also, it's very obtuse in that you have to kind of figure out how it all works by yourself though thankfully there are decent guides out there. You have three elements with special abilities that aid you in your journey: heads, weapons and backpacks. New ones are found along the way, bought in the shop or unlocked through secret actions. You can choose your combination of items for each run and there's one - Brick Head, Shark Fin and Scythe - which basically allows you to blast through levels with little difficulty. That combination allowed me to get a lot farther than I expected (third world) and grab some very high ratio stuff. I've made a good few gos at pushing further but my lack of skill really kicks in and I end up fudging it. Then again, all I need is one good run and I could possibly complete it so I'll keep trying for now.

UselessFATDOG and I knocked out the training and survival missions on Star Wars Battlefront, including the tough task of attempting one on Master difficulty without dying and under 35 minutes. We tried a few times on Hoth as most solutions suggest but didn't do too well. Then Useless found out about an option to camp on tree houses in Endor and we were able to blast it out in a few attempts. Unfortunately, I did die but he didn't so we got three out of the four achievements between us. Another attempt with me playing safe should get me the last one. I also worked through all the battle missions to get a bit more stuff but I can't imagine I'll succeed on Master in them due to suckage. Overall, it's a cool game that really captures the spirit of the franchise, and I particularly like playing as the different heroes, but until I really delve into the proper multiplayer battle side of things I'm only seeing a small bit of it.

I'd really enjoyed the few levels of Human Fall Flat that I'd played and fully intended to play through the rest getting what I could, but the Speedrun achievement was a concern for me because the three extra levels added had made the requirement longer, with another planned soon. Thankfully the game features co-op in which everyone gets the achievements earned by anyone in the levels. AH101 community member Wakapeil is very well versed in the game and had previously shepherded a few people through it in sessions I'd missed. Luckily I was able to jump into a new one and he ran me and a few others through the whole thing where I not only got the Speedrun but also the majority of other stuff along the way, including everything in the DLCs. I only need to go back to a few bits in a couple of levels and grind out some stuff for the completion.

Another easy ratio hit came from doing Killer Instinct and RC Pro-Am II in Rare Replay. Killer Instinct was really easy because it can be mostly done with a second controller or cheesing moves using Sabrewulf to knock enemies off the stage. RC Pro-Am II is a bit more involved but you don't actually have to win the campaign, just do rubbish and use Infinite Continues. You only need to win one race and save before the end, then reload that save 50 times to fool the tracker. If the rest of Rare Replay is this easy I'll definitely be knocking out more of it (I know it isn't really).

G-Unit 11: Marooners, Cyber Troopers & Path of MotusPermalink
This week's GTASC bonus tasked us with getting achievements from all the letters of the alphabet. That mostly meant a fair amount of hopping around between loads of games, and I tried to pair it with the Gamertag challenge where possible too. Haimrik, Talent Not Included, Super Night Riders, Danger Zone, My Brother Rabbit, The Jackbox Party Pack, Rock of Ages II: Bigger and Boulder and Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut provided a good amount of letters with not much effort. One game gave out loads of letters though with a bit more time put into it, which I'll talk about below.

With the alphabet in the bag, I carried on working on the Gamertag challenge, grabbing quick and easy achievements in Polychromatic, ACA NEOGEO THE KING OF FIGHTERS '94 and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. I wouldn't have needed to do much else, but decay thanks to people rushing to complete Thief of Thieves meant that GTASC safety also needed securing with a spot of The Jackbox Party Pack 5.

Oh no, I don't want to touch those big giant balls!Oh no, I don't want to touch those big giant balls!
Marooners is a party game that I'm sure is fun with friends for about five minutes. It's extremely simplistic with two main modes, arcade where you try and knock everyone else off the stage, and party where you compete in a handful of short minigames to grab coins and survive the longest. Each match is over in minutes (or sometimes just seconds) so it is fast and frantic. It is also very light on content with everything barring more characters and weapons (which are purely aesthetic) being available from the beginning. Thankfully that doesn't matter too much seeing as most people got it for free with Games with Gold.

The achievements are very straightforward but rather grindy, asking you to complete 100 games and get 25,000 coins. You could boost with friends, but actually it's more efficient to do it against the bots because they are extremely dumb and often kill themselves before you get the opportunity to. I've slogging my way through it but it's difficult to stay awake...

Blue smoke? Is my mech suit experiencing a fart-splosion?Blue smoke? Is my mech suit experiencing a fart-splosion?
Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram is an old Arcade and Sega Saturn game and it shows. It's a very dated 3D fighting game where you fight as giant mechs with a mix of melee and ranged attacks. It's a quick an easy completion as you can blast through the story and score attack modes on very easy. Like a few of these Arcade classic games you also need to do some online multiplayer. However, thanks to it being Backwards Compatible I was able to simply self boost that on both consoles.

I'm not sure, but think I know where this one is goingI'm not sure, but think I know where this one is going
I'm a bit of a dork when it comes to logic puzzles and when I travel I usually take a puzzle book with me. One of my favourites is one where there are a serious of numbers in circles and you create bridges to link the numbers but you can only have as many bridges going from a number as the number itself. Imagine my delight when I discovered that one of the core mechanics in indie puzzle platformer The Path of Motus is those puzzles! The game itself is fairly simplistic. As well as those puzzles, there's some basic platforming where you also have to shoot enemies with certain coloured bullets that match to the face buttons.

There are only three short worlds so it is very quick to run through and you have to go through it twice to get the completion. The second playthrough is for navigating the platforming without actually killing anyone, which isn't all that challenging. That achievement ties into the game's overall story and theme, which is about the nature of bullying, hostility and taking the higher ground. It's a neat idea and pretty well done considering it's a one man development and for the easy and quick score, I'd recommend it over other similar small indie titles that are much less polished.

G-Unit 10: Age of Empires & Random BitsPermalink
Bit of a random one this time as it was mostly spent wrapping things up and going for challenges and bonuses. No focused write-ups or piccies this time.

I went away for a few days with work and, seeing as I had my laptop with me, I decided to grab Age of Empires: Definitive Edition (Win 10) (2018) for the easy points boost it would give for GTASC. You can basically use cheats to cheese your way through the whole thing and AH101 member KooshMoose helped me out on the single multiplayer achievement. The good thing about knocking this out is that it means I can also download the latest version of the game for free, which has its own achievement list and which will all (hopefully) pop just by starting it up so I can save it for when GTASC is getting tight.

For RTDL I made a bit of progress on both Batman: Arkham Knight and Bridge Constructor but not enough to really talk about just yet.

The most recent GTASC bonus was a fairly tough one as you had to match the previous week's achievement count and GS, whilst also ensuring survival. The mountain level in Human Fall Flat and Fibbage helped, especially as they were on the RTDL list too. A final boost with UselessFATDOG led to the completion of Aliens: Colonial Marines, which was nice to get done 5 years later. Then a spot of ACA NEOGEO METAL SLUG and The Jackbox Party Pack 5 took me to only 20G out from the bonus.

I could have plumped for an easy gimmie achievement for the last one as I was pretty sure I'd be safe, but decided to go nuts and revisit the last achievement in the Plague Inc: Evolved DLC to get 3 biohazards with Mad Cow Disease. After a bunch of false starts and save/loading to manipulate the RNG, it finally popped. It's supposedly one of the hardest scenarios in the game so now I'm thinking maybe the Big 3 won't be so bad to go for.

Finally, I revisited X-Men Origins: Wolverine for a Hard speedrun to grab the last achievement and completion for the Gamertag challenge. Cheats mean it's not very challenging but they also make it fairly mind numbing and repetitive. Still, it's nice to knock another 5 year old completion off.

G-Unit 9: Aliens Colonial Marines, ARK & JerichoPermalink
The hefty GTASC bonus and powering through an RTDL title were my main focus this time, though I did also get some more co-op time in on Aliens: Colonial Marines. Now September's over, a new RTDL list and Gamertag challenge is incoming. On the surface, it looks like I'll be focusing on Bridge Constructor, Broken Age and Batman: Arkham Knight. The Gamertag is fighterx93chipp, which will mostly be okay barring the X. Apparently there'll be extra bonus draws for all additional P's unlocked too.

I think if I ask you to say Ah I might regret itI think if I ask you to say "Ah" I might regret it
Most of my time was taken up continuing my unexpected resurrection of Aliens: Colonial Marines thanks to UselessFATDOG. We ploughed through the campaign on Ultimate Badass with relative ease (i.e. he carried me by constantly reviving me after I ran headlong into danger). Now we're working on the Challenge grind, replaying certain boosting sections and multiplayer to smash them out. I'm expecting the completion will follow soon. I still don't have much positive to say about the game (ugly, glitchy, poorly written and nonsensical story that's an insult to the film) but I have really enjoyed playing it in this way and I'm glad UselessFATDOG got me to go back to it. It makes me look at other games I passed over the multiplayer and/or co-op elements for years ago because I never had anyone to boost with regularly.

Come at me broCome at me bro
With the GTASC bonus requiring a hefty 3,000 TAD I needed a game that could dish out big numbers quickly and easily because the other stuff I was working on wouldn't scratch the surface of that number. Thankfully, ARK: Survival Evolved fits that bill nicely and as it's on GamePass I didn't need to pay for it. It's hard to really judge the game fairly because, like Conan Exiles, the completion can be cheesed using console commands. Ordinarily it would probably take hundreds of hours, but with some mostly straightforward copying and pasting it can be wrapped up in a handful of hours. I could complain that the amount of copying pasting is obnoxious, with some achievements requiring hundreds of codes, but that's not really fair considering it's basically a cheat way to play. I will say that when the game was announced I was intrigued by the whole survival sandbox with rideable dinosaurs thing, and from the little I played it seems to tick that box nicely. I enjoyed a bit of wandering on the beach and stumbling on a Triceratops, which didn't take too kindly to a punch in the butt. I did find the menus and interfaces very unwieldy, cluttered and cumbersome though, so if I was playing properly I'd imagine that would be frustrating.

Mate, I really don't think the headgear is doing much in the way of protecting right nowMate, I really don't think the headgear is doing much in the way of protecting right now
With those two games taking my focus it was looking like I might not finish up Clive Barker's Jericho this month for the RTDL achievement, but I made sure to push through it on XX and wrap up the final act, followed by some small grinding on cumulatives that I'd missed.

With the GTASC bonuses diverting me over the last couple of weeks, I've unfortunately missed my goal to finish the other RTDL and Gains campaign, Saw 2: Flesh & Blood, so that goes back down the pile. However, it would be kind of appropriate to revisit around Halloween if I can make the time.
