In my quest to finish my backlog of Xbox 360 titles, the last few I'd completed were physical titles so I turned my attention to my digital-only titles for a change of pace. There are also quite a few I'm really interested in playing. One of these titles is Abyss Odyssey, which I'd looked at a while back and saw something about catching monsters which is usually a game that is right up my alley. I started it on Sunday and found an interesting game. First, it's a side-scrolling game in the vein of games like Castlevania. But...the combat is a little more nuanced and is very similar to Smash Bros. You play as a dream that journeys into a randomly spawned pit to fight other nightmares. The enemy catching is actually fairly minor, with your character having the ability to trap the souls of enemies killed with a full-mana attack and then transform into whatever soul they have on-hand. The enemies all play differently so it adds a lot of variety to the proceedings. But besides the boss' souls the enemies you can turn into are much weaker than the normal player characters and isn't worth it except to preserve your character's health.

Overall, the game is quite is quite easy and I was able to reach the end boss on my first run through the pit. But for the various leveling and random boss achievements it requires many more than one run. For the three "max out the character" achievements, you can do so in 2-3 runs with each one. But then you have to get some particular bosses to appear, which ranges from "see them every run" to "annoying to get to spawn". Falling in the latter category is the Living Creature, which not only spawns only when you enter one of the base camps after beating the pit or dying, but also spawns in the base camp where you have no weapons upgrades, souls, or any help at all. Oh, did I forget to mention that once you leave the pit (whether from dying or beating the end boss) you lose your inventory? This makes fighting the Living Creature a chore to get to spawn then even a bigger chore to actually defeat. In my case, if it wasn't for me being over level 40 AND being able to count on the firefighter that spawns to help when you die I wouldn't have defeated it. I would have had to grind a lot more for my achievement for capturing a high level enemy, but I was lucky enough to get help from Awoo, who was kind enough to let me enter their game and buy the soul I needed and get my achievement. WHEW! A fun little game but super repetitive. Shame. Lot of potential.

While Abyss Odyssey was fun, Monday saw me unable to get an achievement. Even worse, our internet kept cutting out due to an issue at the provider level. During a short window of availability, I decided to forgo risking possibly breaking my streak and decided to quickly get an achievement in a new, short, easy game. Nightmares from the Deep: The Cursed Heart was that game. Now I've heard a lot about the Artifex Mundi games on Xbox and their ease to complete, but hadn't played one yet. This reminds me a lot of those old adventure games on PC. The effects are lame, the voice acting is cringy, and it just all feels cheap. I only got the one achievement on Monday to keep my streak going and didn't come back until I'd finished Abyss Odyssey on Friday. Anyway, it is indeed easy but I had to make 2.5 runs through the game instead of the required two because I didn't know about the requirements of each playthrough. I was a good halfway through my first run when I realized, so I quickly restarted and blew through what took me an hour or two previously in about 30 minutes. My second playthrough was quite short, too. I have a couple of these from sales so I know now I can jump into one if I need to.

While I was playing through Abyss Odyssey on Wednesday, Shawn1991 decided to start Assassin's Creed Unity. Since it's a co-op game that we need each other for, it was only a matter of time until I started it, too. That time would be Saturday after I finished Nightmares from the Deep and I was happy to be back in an Assassin's Creed game. The last time I'd played one was Assassin's Creed Rogue back in August of 2015 so...it's been a while. Of course this one is notorious for being broken on release and isn't favored amongst fans. But...I've been playing games that are almost ten years old so anytime I jump into a more modern and complex Xbox One title I'm in awe. The game is great so far and is so cool to just take in the sights. I didn't make it too far in the game Saturday night but I hope to make more on Sunday. I can't wait to try co-op and will have more to say next week I'm sure. For now, it's just Assassin's Creed but prettier.

My new game this week was Shaun White Skateboarding, which I jumped right into on Sunday. I'd toyed with the idea of starting this game for some time now, but skateboarding games tick me off to no end (Shawn1991 can attest to that with Skate 3..) so even though the achievements pointed to this being a much easier completion overall, I didn't take the dive...until this week! The nice thing that makes this game so much easier than your Skates and your Tony Hawks is how it's almost impossible to bail and your character has inhuman balance. For the various challenges, you only need at least a bronze for most of them (and even the golds are crazy easy to get) and the collectibles are easy to find. It's also short! All around this is a really good completion for achievement hunters. I'm baffled at the higher ratios. Makes zero sense. The "gimmick" of this game is that you play as the savior of a boring bunch of Footloose-types and have the ability to create rails and vert ramps and paths from thin air. It's really only useful to collect the treasure chests and arrows for those achievements. You get off your board, but that serves no purpose. I played it on and off throughout the week and managed to finish Saturday night. I'm working overtime at work so, while I'll get a sweet payday, it's digging into my already limited gaming time. Here's hoping things clear up soon.

Continuing my efforts to tidy up my incomplete games, I put some real effort into The Sims Medieval and almost reached the end of my first playthrough. Luckily the game is overall pretty short so after getting the grind to full stats out of the way I was able to blow through the various quests. I'm currently clearing out the last few side-quests before I move onto my second playthrough. That should be much quicker. The only problem I foresee is gathering the Focus Points I need to proceed through the quests. It seems fulfilling all my Sims' needs and sitting in the fishing interface makes time pass, no needs go lower, and I gain FPs. So if I need to that's how I'll gather as much as I need.

Before I bought a new game specifically to play this week, I had originally planned to play Babel Rising 3D alongside my efforts to work my way through Sims. I'd played this game before on the Xbox 360 and it's not very hard and quite short. Unlike the console version, though, there's no multiplayer despite what the achievements describe. And I did knock out most of the achievements quite easily and quick...except for the one for using all of the scrolls and passive abilities once. First, I should say this is a delisted titles, which I've I mentioned before brings a certain level of anxiety with it. If it broke or something, I'd be boned. Well...that happened. The final achievement for using all of those abilities turned out to be glitched on my game after I ran through with each ability 3 times. I had the option of deleting the game and reinstalling, but that was sketchy and didn't work for a couple other games I tried it with. Luckily, this game can be installed on a Windows 10 device through the Store, which unlike the Windows 8 OS can access delisted titles. Sadly, it's completely broken. The screen doesn't fit, meaning I can't see the right 1/4 of the screen along with the bottom 1/4. I can still access it, luckily, since the mouse is also off. It's still playable but it's annoying as heck. I didn't have to do much, though. I just had to get far enough in the campaign to unlock all the various options and then run through all of the powerups. But...it didn't pop again! I was just about to lose my s*** when I quickly started the next game starting at the beginning of the list of powerups and it popped upon the game loading up. JEEZ! I've been having a lot of bad luck with glitches lately. Eesh. I was thinking about doing the original Windows Phone version which I still have on my old Windows Phone 7. But that's not only delisted but on an old, barely-functioning phone AND it's got the same glitch. That's a risk...that I kinda wanna take.

The week prior saw Telltale have a huge sale on their games and I even bought the Windows 10 stack of the first The Walking Dead game. Well, on Monday my wife was pushing hard for me to go ahead and grab The Walking Dead - A New Frontier. We didn't quite have the money for it...but screw it. I was just as excited as she was so I grabbed it and decided to do one episode a day. As usual, I won't go into specifics much since the story is the main reason to play these games. But, wow, Telltale's engine doesn't look better than in this game. Still the occasional hiccup, but having just played their first big title last week it's even more obvious how they're progressed. The story doesn't have quite the same bite as the first and second titles but it was still a great tale. It's also wonderful watching Clementine grow and build on the foundation Lee began. I also feel like this story could have changed more drastically, and on the end-of-the-episode summaries there were often options I didn't chose that I hadn't even been aware were available to me. That shows a bit more of a nuance to makes decisions. There of course will likely be a Season 4 and I can't wait. This narrative continues to be so far ahead of the television show.

Speaking of cleanup, I badly needed to work on Fallout Shelter, a game I was playing daily a couple months ago before my battle with influenza and then...I kind of forgot about. Well, I changed that on Saturday where I spent most of the day messing with the PC's clock and getting lunchboxes, completing quests, and crafting items. I managed to snag a few achievements and make good progress on others. Not a single legendary dweller, though. I feel bad for people that buy lunchboxes. What a waste...

Ending my two months of Gamefly, SpongeBob HeroPants was my final game and I started it after finishing my blog on Sunday. Being a kids game, this was very easy and I actually finished it the following day, which was Memorial Day and therefore I got to stay home from work. Getting paid to sit home and play SpongeBob games? Awesome. I followed a guide for the collectibles, but this was mostly a formality to keep from having to play too much if I missed one because the pages and trophies are not hidden well. With only 20 levels and each one taking maybe 5 minutes makes this a very short game. The grind comes when you have max out each character's stats. This requires WAY more money than you would collect through normal gameplay. By the end of the game I'd managed to fully upgrade only SpongeBob and Squidward. This left a whole 'nother 4 characters to upgrade. The second level gives about 950 coins in 5 minutes so that was the best option and it took about 2 hours to grind the rest of the coins I needed. That was another easy completion thanks to Gamefly. That's 8 completions in two months for $11. Win!

After finishing SpongeBob, I quickly jumped on Operation Darkness and began my run through the final 16 floors of the Eagle's Nest. The challenge didn't increase enough to cause much of a problem, with my characters only dying (and getting revived; curse you, permadeath) a few times and lost only once. Now that I'd leveled up quite a bit, had no time limit, all the money for the best healing items I could want, and couldn't care less if non-important characters died, the end mission was now a complete joke. None of my characters even died this time and I managed to finish it pretty quickly. Done! That wasn't a very tough completion at all and I kind of want to play more games like this. I own another apparently, Spectral Force 3: Innocent Rage. Maybe I'll do it soon? It's much more of a time investment so...we'll see.

The Xbox Store sale this week featured Telltale titles across all platforms. The prices were slashed pretty low and this included the Windows 10 versions, which unlike the Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles I can't rent them. So I finally grabbed The Walking Dead on Windows 10 and made the grueling third run through this wonderful narrative. It really is like watching a really long film you enjoy because even going through a third time I enjoyed the story. That ending is still heartbreaking and that stupid luck-based achievement (the only one in all of the Telltale games I've played) is still annoying. I decided to spice things up a little by making drastically different choices this time. Of course, this didn't change all that much though I did get to enjoy a few new scenes but these didn't really add any new insights or anything. Nice and easy.

As part of my continued efforts to clean up my incomplete games, I used The Walking Dead to stretch my streak as I worked on The Sims Medieval between episodes. This is really the first time I've even turned the game on at home, opting to usually jump on during my lunch breaks at work. And even then, that's sparse. But, this is a really easy and overall short game that has been sitting on my 'tag for far too long. I didn't make a lot of progress this week but it's still more progress than I've made across the past few months. One annoying thing about this is how little my Sim can go without sleep. If you've played these games before, you know that once your Sim gets pretty tired they'll refuse to do anything. Well, in this game reaching that point takes about 2 minutes, if that. It's so bothersome! Anyway, gonna try and get this done before the end of the month. Shouldn't be difficult.

Speaking of games that have been on my 'tag too long... Zumba Fitness World Party got some much-needed attention this week. I'd actually aimed to complete my final stop in the World Tour mode weeks ago but various health issues kept me from walking very well, much less dance around like an idiot. First my knee swelled up, limiting my movement where even moving it caused intense pain. Then, once that got better I pushed myself too far and too soon on a hike and injured my calf muscle. But then came Saturday and I finally felt pretty good so I loaded the game up and "travelled" to Puerto Rico. Not only am I bit out of shape from the weeks of injury/pain but I'd originally left Puerto Rico for last due to the high intensity of just about every song in the playlist. I got a good workout for a half hour and managed to five-star all of the songs (even though that wasn't necessary) and got my collectible and completion achievements. I figured I may as well get the rest of the achievements I needed so I also went and completed my last tutorial and had my wife jump in to do a 20-minute Full Class with me for that achievement. This only left the "5000 calories burned" achievement which I wasn't crazy enough to try and grind out right now. After completing the rest of the achievements I'm only at about 1600 calories burned.

My efforts in Europe continued this week in Operation Darkness, taking up most of my free time. I was still working to beat the game in time to earn the speed-run achievement, and was still making great progress with that in mind. Before I got there, I had to get through some tough missions. Manageable, for sure, but then Hitler came along. I know it goes without saying but Hitler is a douchebag! While actually the second-to-last mission, it's easily the hardest. It might have been easier if I wasn't going for the speed run since I would have been able to level up in the side missions beforehand. But...I was going for it, so I went in and had to make it work. It took a couple night of attempts and I even lost a character to permadeath. Sure, I could have reloaded my save, but then I would have to complete the mission again. No thanks. It's funny that this is so tough, as the final mission involves 2 bosses, followed by another boss teamed with two ginormous dragons, ending with an even stronger and larger boss! But... still easier than Hitler, his two bosses, and one dragon. Ether way, after many attempts and lots of yelling, I took down Hitler and his goons, wiped the floor with the next mission, and got my speed run achievement. I quickly went back and cleared all of the AR side missions and am now working on the Eagle's Nest, a tower of death that is so far easy. I'm only getting stronger, so I don't see that being an issue. I also will have to do the final mission again, but I'll be even stronger by the time I go back. Shouldn't be much longer. This'll be a nice completion.

I actually started my next Gamefly game, Agatha Christie - The A.B.C. Murders, on Monday, but that was just to quickly get an achievement to prolong my streak when Operation Darkness didn't give one up before bed. That took about 3 minutes. I didn't really start playing it until Saturday and...got all 2 achievements in two playthrough that same day. I love games like this, where they're short enough that I can get all of the achievements in one day. Actually, since I was free all of the time, I could do that with most game. I miss those days. ...Anyway, this was a nice little story. Funny enough, this is another mystery game with a middle European middle-aged man in the main role akin to The Raven, which I did at the beginning of this year. The animation is a little stilted and the gameplay is slow, but it was a nice little mystery and I'm happy I played it. I did have to follow a guide closely to avoid more playthroughs since there's no way to chapter select later on. Annoying, but just means a completionist needs to be more cautious.

By the beginning of the week, I only had the final five levels in Blobster to complete. I figured I'd slowly work on them throughout the week during my lunch breaks. But...then the game got annoying. SO ANNOYING! The controls were never great but it was easy enough that it didn't bother me. But then it started getting glitch too along with an increase in difficulty. Even a "hard" level took me about 5-6 minutes, but it was so annoying. Anyway, it's done. It's always worrisome doing delisted games. What if my phone broke?!
