As with last week, I noticed they'd fixed some achievements in a different version of Minecraft and jumped on there to get some sweet, sweet awards. The first two were easy enough as I had more than enough materials to get them. The third required some more time. Normally I'd happily play Minecraft for the 30+ hours needed for 100 days to pass, but I still can't get my saves to stay put so there's zero motivation to actually DO anything in the game, This meant it was time for every achievement hunter's best friend: idling! So I turned the game on before I went to work on Monday and came home to a nice achievement. Which was good because I didn't really have time to get one. What luck!

As a part of the Black Friday holiday sale, Microsoft was kind enough to discount a month of the Xbox Game Pass to $1. I figured I'd take a break from trying to complete my backlog, buy a month of Game Pass and see how much I could complete before time was up. Sadly, most of the easy/short completions that are available on Game Pass I've either already completed or I already own. So, instead of an "easy month", I figured I'd just use my extended holiday weekend and complete what few games I hadn't played or purchased and then use the rest of my $1 month to play some other, longer games. To start my easy week, I decided to download Sam & Max Save the World and its sequel. I've wanted to play them for a while (especially since they're Telltale games) but just hadn't gotten around to purchasing them in the numerous sales they've been a part of. Well, this is even better! I know very little about The Freelance Police, but from little I've seen I could tell It was funny. I'd also never read the comic book or seen the Fox Kids animated show. Somehow, they've always been just on my periphery but never really grabbed my focus. Well, I obviously changed that and it's pretty great. The writing is funny and I quite enjoyed the banter and wacky storylines. Gameplay-wise, the puzzles are about as obscure as you can get and I'm not sure how in the world I would have managed without a guide. After playing this, I did go back and watch a few episodes of the cartoon. It's not bad and they managed to keep the spirit true while making it kid friendly. I'm definitely happy I visited the strange world and characters of Steve Purcell.

Of course completing the previous game led to me quickly starting Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space. While more of the same good stuff, I played the majority of this entry on Thanksgiving. This meant mostly family interaction and watching movies, so I still played this but had my earphones out and skipped all the dialogue. Pretty much, I got the completion only. I DID slow down to record a video so I at least paid attention to one of the episodes. But, hey, it's another completion! And from what I caught, the puzzles are just as weird and the storyline even weirder.

Moving to my next game, I decided to try something more recent than old XBLA titles with Hue, which I'd seen before in some streams back when it was released. It always looked fun and it being easy, too, means I was all for playing it. The art-style is very reminiscent of LIMBO Achievements (which I still need to play...) and the gameplay is fun. The puzzles never felt taxing and I didn't need to look any solutions up until the very last puzzle, when I just couldn't quite figure it out. Story-wise, I'm not really sure what was going on. The narrative is mostly played out through narration when you find a new letter from your mom, so it's pretty easy to miss it if you're not paying attention. It's very short, though, and in no time I'd knocked it out.

Taking a quick diversion from my Game Pass quest, the same fella who let me play Dead Rising: Case West and Case Zero in Japanese allowed me access to Unmechanical: Extended (JP), and with it being such a short completion I thought I'd rush through it really quick. I've played this previously, and I have even less to say this time. I guess the best thing I can share is it's very easy to play in Japanese since there's no text.

Moving on, my next target was SoulCalibur. A fighting game. Which I hate. A lot. But, hey, the ratios and estimates made it sound easy so I figured I could muddle through. And, yeah, it was very simple. This is a fairly old game but the controls work just fine and I was comboin' in no time. Luckily, I can always count on the TA community to figure out the easiest method to get any achievements and I used these tips to play the cheapest characters and get these achievements with as little trouble as possible. I did get angry at one point when ringing out enemies proved to be annoying using Nightmare and Cervantes, but using Ivy's throw made it much easier. All-in-all it took about 3 hours to complete (factoring in getting distracted by The Punisher) and wasn't awful. The only entry in the series I'd ever played previously was the second game on Gamecube. Mostly to play as Link! Actually, ONLY to play as Link. Seriously, I think I played two matches as Link and never touched it again.

Moving back to an Xbox One selection, Mega Coin Squad is supposed to be some homage to old 2D platformers, but it has more in common with Mario Bros. than Super Mario Bros. You stay in one area and try to score a lot. There's a scoring system where you can earn gems for beating a time-limit, not taking a hit, and banking all your coins in one go. The "not getting hit" part can be a little annoying since there can be plenty of cheap moments due to the gameplay and controls. But, it's still a pretty easy game. Even the achievement for beating a run of the single-player in one go without dying or retrying wasn't THAT bad, though I may have gotten a little hot when I died on the second-to-last level. Not okay! It's fun, though. At least at first. When all is said and done, you have to play through the story mode at least six times. If you're moving quickly, you can do one playthrough in about 30 minutes, so it's not exactly time-consuming. Just dull. And easy!

Rounding out my week was The Bridge, another game I'd played previously. It's also very easy and since I used no guides last time I decided to just dive right in and use all the help I could get. This means in only an hour or so I'd cleared half the game. I still love the cool MC Escher-style puzzles and visual trickery the game pulls. Very neat. I'll likely knock this out pretty quickly. And then I think I'm going to move on to something a little more substantial on offer.

I finally finished Defiance this week! On Sunday, all I had left to do was to complete one Top Notch Toolworks daily and win one match of Freight Yard and I had my final achievements! I did play until Monday so I could help Shawn1991 queue up for his remaining two days of Chimera dailies, but that was the end of that. I'm so happy to have this one down. It only took a month and three days to finish everything up. That's way below our estimate!

With Defiance thoroughly handled, I turned my attention back to my new game from last week, Puzzle Arcade. This game is really easy, as it's just putting together jigsaw puzzles...a lot. The two longer achievements took about 4 hours each, so those were a bore. The other achievements were no problem and I got a session together on Thursday for the one multiplayer achievement. All-in-all a fun little game that I'd been meaning to play for some time now.

I also jumped back on Stranglehold this week after grabbing a second copy last week from a local gaming store. Looking through the achievements for the online, I realized that it wouldn't take anywhere near as long as I'd expected and I could likely finish it in one sitting. I set to work and ended up lollygagging a little too much, so I had to split it into two sessions but in no time I'd completed that batch of achievements. Compared to previous grinds I'd done this was cake.

So, I may have been only very slightly too confident last week when talking about my completion of Defiance. It will in fact be written about in my next two blogs posts...but that's only because of my strict Saturday-at-midnight cutoff for achievements. Yeah, I'm pretty much done. As of midnight I only needed one win in Freight Yard and one more daily for Top-Notch Toolworks for my final achievement. So, not even an hour! It was obviously a good week, starting on a high note; not long after completing my blog I got my Lucky Kitty title and achievement, marking the end of my "achievement-a-day" efforts in this game. With the Warmaster killed and the Lucky Kitty in my hands it was time to just blow through what I could every day. Our first goal was to complete and earn gold medals on the Gunslinger Trials. with those other achievements out of the way, this was the only worry left. And...again, should not have been one. It was a joke! Granted, there was one arena that gave us a moment of pause since Dekuso is a pain and annoyance of a boss. But, it took us only a few attempts to get a strategy that worked and it was back to clearing them quickly. This ended any need for co-op in the game, though I did recruit Shawn1991 to help me run a new character through the Arkbreaker DLC Combat Tech side missions for the achievement that glitched on me. I got so much out of the way so quickly! This has been a much shorter experience than we'd both expected. The real reason that a good couple weeks got cut off was that we found a clan that would run us through the Chimera dailies, something we couldn't normally do until we hit EGO level 5000. Here, just about to finish, I'm still only at level 3,400. That's a month of playing! Hitting level 5000 would have added a long tail to my playtime. On top of that, it would have been another 25 dailies after hitting 5000 to get the achievement. So, the real hero is link199097, who would often go out of his way to take us through them daily. That was awesome! Final verdict: this was a completely capable MMOTPS but more than a little dull and repetitious. I look forward to typing about how it took me a few minutes to complete this after I finish this here entry.

I actually decided to play something else this week when I ran out of things to do in Defiance for the day. On Monday, I started Puzzle Arcade for, if anything, a change of pace. I also ended up needing an achievement for the day, so it worked out. I worked a while on a puzzle with 1008 pieces, but made only a little progress. I quickly finished a 9-piece kitten puzzle for my achievement and stopped for the week. My goal next will be to finish it. Should be fun.

Another week, more Defiance. I'm actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, though! The main time-consuming achievements are for getting Rank 3 reputation with the four main base game factions and completing 25 daily contracts with two of the DLC factions. Then, there are three "iffy" achievements: one for landing the killing blow on a fairly rare opponent in a public event, one for killing a VERY tough boss, and one that is 100% luck. In the latter group, I actually managed to get two of them! On Sunday I started testing how the minor arkfall sites work and quickly figured out the pattern on how the Huntmaster spawns. I even fought 4 of them, but they were killed by other people around. But, I finally got one with the right conditions and no one else around and got the achievement! For the next couple days I turned to trying the major arkfall impacts to kill the Warmaster, which I was a little more worried about getting. From everything I'd read the boss was a PAIN to kill without advanced planning and coordination. But, I decided bunk to that and started just calling down arkfalls and hoping people would show. I got it about 1/5 of the way down a few times before Friday, when a clanmate of mine BloodierPrince started calling people to fight the Warmaster. I jumped to him and sure enough a couple clanmates, some randoms, and myself took him down! I felt bad, because a mere ten minutes later Shawn1991 came online, so we're gonna have to work on getting him the achievement. Out of the worrisome achievements, this leaves the completely luck-based one. I tried to attend as many incursions as I could throughout the week and still no sign of the Lucky Kitty title. *groan*

Other than that, it was time to work on getting the rep and dailies every day. I need to do 25 dailies for two factions, which obviously would have required 25 days to complete but I gave in and bought a 30-day Patron Pass for $10.00, which means I get double dailies every day, double weeklies, and more EGO and rep overall. It should cut my time on the game by a lot. I managed to finish upgrading my rep with the 7th Legion, but one of the pursuits I need to complete requires my buying 10 items at 100 rep each. I only needed to reach a couple hundred rep to reach the rank I needed, so it's going to be grinding from here on out. I also still need two more PvP map achievements for wins, which I'm close for one but no so much on the other. All-in-all, this won't take much longer. If I'm still playing this in two more blog posts (not counting maybe grinding a little rep daily or trying to the Lucky Kitty title) I'll be really surprised.

Continuing our trek through Defiance, Shawn1991and I made more good progress over week three. Playing the game daily has devolved into tedium, as there's just so little to do; the dailies are missions that repeat in the story line and various side-quests and you're therefore just repeating the same thing over and over again. There are only a handful of different kinds of arkfalls and incursions (which the latter repeats the same tiny handful of objectives again and again within the same incursion event). It's just...boring. Luckily, this is all also very easy so far. I did fight my first Volge Warmaster, which wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be and is probably still the hardest thing I'll encounter in my quest to finish the game. progress-wise, I'm now EGO rank 1682, at least Reliable with all the important factions but one, and I'm just cutting a swath through the inhabitants of California with some strong equipment my clan tends to just hand me all the time. It's still looking like this will take, at most, two months, with maybe a little daily 20-minute playtime to grind rep with the final faction. It's going to be cake, but I may have to start something else soon. It's getting harder and harder to get an achievement daily in just this.

This could be considered overkill, but I don't care! This could be considered overkill, but I don't care!
