I can totally understand all of the hate it has gotten over the last 30 years, though. I imagine if I would have got it as a kid on the NES I would have hated it too.
But it'd be mainly cause I couldn't figure out how to play.

Is it hard? I've never heard about this game
Yes and no. It looks like it would be an ARPG, but really it's a strategy game. Beating a playthrough entails marching your King 1000 meters without dying.
The achievements correspond to the 5 difficulties. 1000m on normal, 1000m on hard, and so on for the full 5000m.
You pick up other troops and pass through other kingdoms along the way. Using your troops to guard your king from enemies, and learning what troops work against what enem
ies are key. My wife and I are having a blast having fits of Bokosuka Madness where we forgo all troops and just try to mad rush the King to the end and see who gets the
furthest. This review for the NES original is pretty accurate. https://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/562967-bokosuka-wars/reviews/18...
My record so far is 991 meters on hard with just my King and no troops. I died in the room with the enemy King by some lowly enemy peon.
But, when I first boot it up it legitimately took me a solid few minutes to even figure out who I was on screen and what I was doing.
I remember playing this on the NES. That sentence alone caused me to rage quit and never try playing again. I think I was 11 at the time.
