Remember "Outer Wilds"?
Posted on 2/07/2019
Remember that game everyone received a free pre-order of for streaming E3 on Mixer last year? Outer Wilds
, was it? The game is meant to be an open-world mystery/adventure game set on a planet where the sun goes supernova and wipes out all life forms, just 20 minutes after starting. Once the pre-order went live on Xbox, it had an initial release date of December, 2799.
Peculiar, isn't it? Shortly after the pre-order was added, anyone who earned it was able to install a 200MB file from the title. But once the user attempted to open the game, they would be prompted with the good ol' "you're too early" message.
Months went by and we kept getting prompted with the same message over and over. Most of us probably forgot about it and went on to enjoy other games in the meantime. Because, well, why wouldn't we? Well if you try to open the game today (or at any point in the past two months), you'll be prompted with a new message: "Try a different game or app. Sorry, this one's no longer available. (0x87e10bc6)" Yep, the game mysteriously vanished from the Xbox game store. Fitting for the setting, I guess.
According to a tweet
from the game's developers, Mobius Digital Games and Annapurna Interactive, the Xbox game store page was just temporary for E3 and they're working on getting a new page set up for Xbox. Many gamers were concerned that they had lost their pre-order, but Mobius confirmed
that everyone's pre-orders are safe.
Last week Mobius released their first update
on the game since November of last year. They state that the game is still in development, but many bugs have been fixed, it will be playable in 10 languages, and they're working on the release trailer.
Are you still excited for this game, or has it taken so long to come to fruition that you've given up on the idea? Either way, we've only got another 780 years until 2799, so keep your fingers crossed.UPDATE: 3/29/19
While we still haven't been given a definitive release date, according to a video posted by ID@Xbox
, Outer Wilds is set to release in 2019 and will be on Xbox Gamepass upon release. In another update
from Mobius, we they also show photos of what the physical copies of the game will look like. Which I must say looks pretty cool. That's all for now, but I'll update this post when more information is given.UPDATE: 4/12/19
Though the development team at Mobius couldn't make it to PAX East this year, Annapurna (the game's publisher) and ID@Xbox hosted demo booths of Outer Wilds for attendees. According to the April update
, the demo booths were met with a full house throughout the duration of the event. For anyone concerned that their Mixpot pre-order of the game been lost, Mobius also shares that they've finally heard back from Microsoft about the keys, saying they are secured and that the game will be delivered digitally upon release.UPDATE: 5/20/19
Earlier this month, Mobius announced
that the game is "nearing the finish line" and will be released on Xbox One and PC via the Epic Games Store
. Today the company also revealed a release trailer for the game and announced that its release date is set for May 30, 2019, just 10 days away.
The trailer can be viewed below:
