Lesson: have proper equipment
So my new PC arrived Wednesday and after getting very excited, I was practically giddy when I did some brief testing. To give some context, on my old machine I would stream at 30fps with a resolution of about 640 x 360 (sometimes lower), no recording. I would drop around 1% of frames (sometimes more, I would drop 30% when trying to record at the same time), get encoding errors and my CPU usage would be around 50%-60%. On my new PC, I tested using 60fps with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, recording at 1280 x 720 at the same time. After 20 minutes I had dropped no frames, got no errors and the highest I saw my CPU go up to was 27%.
I sometimes worry whether spending a lot of money on something is ultimately worth it; you can usually do things cheaper and get a similar result. I was worried here, but they were completely alleviated after I saw the stats; I may have done the dance of joy. What possessed me to think my old setup would have been enough I don’t know. I’d either had not enough coffee or too much coffee that day. But silver lining, if I hadn’t attempted it I wouldn’t have discovered it didn’t work until much later. Plus this new machine gives me scope to expand into PC games if I wish to.
