Mass Effect Andromeda
I've finally come to the end of my 80+ hour Mass Effect Andromeda journey... Most of that time on one male Ryder character, plus a couple hours on Sara Ryder and a good chunk of multiplayer. I ended up getting the Insanity achievement in multiplayer... I might come back sometime to play the campaign on Insanity but that's not on the docket for right now.
My experience of the game was mixed. The complaints about awkward animations and bad faces are legitimate. The last couple of patches have polished up this aspect of the game a lot, but the human faces can still be pretty janky looking.
The biggest problem of the game for me was the open world quest structure. The open world planets were mostly empty space and didn't have much in the way of interesting sights or hidden places to find compared to a game like Skyrim. I often wished the game would just warp you to wherever the mission began, instead of making you drive for 10 minutes over a mountain range to get there every time. And so many quests had you land on Aya, talk to someone for 5 seconds, then fly to Voeld and scan a machine, then fly to Elaaden and clear an exile base, then fly to Eos to scan something else... It sometimes felt like you spent 90% of the time traveling and 10% actually doing stuff. For the next Mass Effect I really hope they go back to a structure more like Mass Effect 2 and 3. BioWare just doesn't seem to be good at this open world stuff.
The stuff I liked was the stuff that's great about every Mass Effect game. Getting to know your squadmates. Exploring the conflicts between the different alien races. Milling around space stations, chatting everybody up. The amount of dialogue in this game is crazy, and the extent to which the squadmates will react uniquely to what's going on, what you've done in the past, and which other squadmate is present, is beyond any of the previous games in the series. The only squadmate that was a dud for me was Liam; everyone else was great and only got deeper and more interesting as the game went on.
I'm only expecting there to be one story DLC based on the reception this game received, and after that, we may be waiting a long time for the next Mass Effect. As long as BioWare can get the gameplay sorted, I'm definitely up for finding out what happens next in Andromeda.
