PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 27
Hello everybody and welcome to another recap of the Great TrueAchievement Score Challenge. Craziness has happened and the scores jumped up quite unexpectedly on both events. The team side was relatively competitive as well as noted. Wednesdays are certainly quite hectic at this point!

Hopefully you were able to get some games on your gamertag during the Bean Dive. After the insanity of adding title after title has come to an end, the recovery is all that matters. For some, this recovery effort is no small feat. I'm looking at around 100 achievements to recover my dive... but I'm almost always on a dive so making progress is difficult. Hopefully you are able to reach 100% recovery, but if you are one of those that took a REALLY DEEP dive, its been nice knowing you! wave

Here's an updated look at how total TA score is fairly similar between the contests most periods.
External image

The bonus on offer last period was one that would be instantly recognizable to fans of the LOST series. That's right... teams were asked to have both members unlock 2 of 6 numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) using the gamerscore value of the achievement. Looking at the games that featured well, Virginia placed well in the stats for both contests. Although there are other games that feature those achievements, they don't feature on the charts anywhere. Interestingly, Lichdom Battlemage is currently featuring on Period 28 Leaderboards. I wonder how many used it for the bonus. I can understand why Cloning Clyde isn't there... it is an older title so many may have played it. With it only being worth 200 gamerscore as well, it probably wasn't as attractive. At the end of the week, 45 teams were able to complete that task with 40 of them ending above elimination.
5 of the 6 eliminated teams also pulled this bonus off but were eliminated as the tide rose past them.

  • GAMES WITH GOLD:

Available Now:
Xbox One: Death Squared (brain-bending puzzler)
Xbox One: Assault Android Cactus (was a 7 ratio, now a 5 ratio)
Xbox 360: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction

Fallout: New Vegas is the game of the month. If you haven't left the vault yet, its high time you do! A life of monsters that want to eat you, exploration and living with radiation poisoning.

1,132 are wandering around New Vegas. 210 just put on their PipBoy. 50 have done everything asked of them. 8,550 achievements were unlocked for 175,065 which is worth 279,115 TA score.

No winners this period.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:
With us this week we have both members of Roast House with us. They did repeat the win so we may hear more in a week's time!
1) Did you play anything memorable last period?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: I can’t say that I did. Going for both the achievement and TA titles in the same week meant leaning heavily on various Minecraft versions. After the third or fourth time through that game, things get a little dry.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: Runbow is a pretty good platformer with a pretty decent challenge in the last couple achievements, other than that not really.

2) What is the meaning behind your gamertag?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: A friend in middle school had the tag ‘PoTrOaSt’. We’ve lost touch, and to this day, I have no idea why he picked that tag, but when l306l PoRkRoAsT and I were picking our tags years ago, we went with the nostalgics nod to our youth and kept the RoAsT tag. I practically live on coffee, so the pun with ‘dark’ basically picked itself. The 306 is the area code to dial into Saskatchewan, a western Province in Canada that I am more than proud to call my home.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: Nothing really special. 306 is our area code here, and one of my friends from high school had the gamertag Potroast so a bunch of us kind of thought it was funny and ran with it. I think at last count we had close to 10 of us who were some type of Roast.

3) What would you consider your greatest gaming accomplishment?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: Unbeatable Fist... I never though I’d work my way through Street Fighter IV. Fighters are not an interest nor a skill of mine, but an achievement was inadvertently popped on my Xbox 360 using my tag, and as a completionist, I didn’t really have much of a choice.
The runner-up in this category is completing Guitar Hero III: Legends or Rock. So many tough achievements on that game made for one hell of a celebration on August 15th, 2012 (yes, it was that big a deal to me that I remember the day I finished it.)
l306l PoRkRoAsT: In terms of an actual game completion proably the 1000g in GH3, i bought the game when it first came out and it took about 5 years of steady play to get good enough to complete it. It also requires an equally impressive local co-op partner to complete so i'm lucky to have had someone who put the same time and dedication into it that I did, who just happens to be my teammate this year. I also finished 3rd in Leap Frog last year which was a lot of work and i'm pretty proud of that.

4) Is there a particular stat that you focus on when gaming? (TA score, Gamerscore, ratio, etc) What about that stat keeps your attention?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: Ratio is a consideration, but for me, I like to finish what I start. Completing games is at the top of this list for me. It can get a little annoying to have to wait a week before playing a new release Tom make sure that there are no unobtainable, broken achievements (looking at you, Mighty No. 9), but with limited time to game, I don’t have the time to continuously put up big numbers or streaks. Completion is a stat that I can control.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: I tend to focus on TA difference which brings ratio and gamerscore together.

5) If you could insert yourself into any game as any character, who would you replace and why?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: Off the top of my head, I can’t think of one. To be as athletic as an assassin from the AC series would be a fairly neat party trick to have, I suppose.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: Probably someone from the Mario universe, i grew up on those game and they really are the reason I am as big of a gamer as I am today. If I have to pick one I'll pick Geno from Super Mario RPG just because it's my favourite game of all time and I loved his Geno Whirl, which one shots any normal enemy in the game, if timed correctly.

6) Is there any game you wish you could remove from your gamertag? If so, what game and why must it go?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: I have been fortunate to have avoided any games with an achievement that I couldn’t unlock. Otherwise, I have enjoyed parts of most games that I have played. Looking back, I wouldn’t have started Guitar Hero: World Tour, if I would have known that in order to unlock Bling, Bling, I would have to listen to No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn nearly 1000 times. The song still gives me chills...
l306l PoRkRoAsT: Anything with an unobtainable achievement attached to it, i hate knowing I have games I can never complete no matter the amount of hours I put in.

7) If you could remaster any game from any previous generation, what would you pick and why?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: Easy: Dungeon Siege. The Xbox 360 got Dungeon Siege III, but the first game in the trilogy will always have a soft spot for me. It was a PC exclusive, but man, did I love that game.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: Super Mario RPG without even a close second. It was the first game I ever bought with my own money so it holds a special place in my heart. It also helps that it's an amazing game and holds up over 20 years after it's release. I bought the game before I could read so I remember struggling to learn how to play and having to teach myself to read to get through the game. (with help from my parents of course)

8) Can you describe your gaming setup? Feel free to include links to pictures.
l306l DaRkRoAsT: I play in our family’s basement entertainment area. We recently finished the basement, and I was fortunate enough to custom build the cabinet to hold the TV and gaming systems inset into the wall. It doubles as the kids’s playroom by day, which is fine, as I don’t often play while they are awake.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: I have a 55" Samsung TV which is about a year and a half old, and an older 42" Samsung TV in my living room. (not really sure on there specs). They each have an Xbox One and Xbox 360 hooked up to them (1 XB1 is the Gears 4 special edition and the other is my Day One XB1, 1 of my 360s is the Halo: Reach special edition and the other is a regular Elite 360) . I have a pair of wireless Astro A50s that i use for chatting and sometimes if I want to listen to music or game audio when I game. I also have a third smaller TV in my bedroom with a PS3 hooked up to it, mostly for streaming video and Blu Ray.

9) What is your favorite type of game? (I'm a sucker for anything vaguely like a flight sim)
l306l DaRkRoAsT: Real-time strategies are my all-time favourite. There is something about being the manager, rather than the player, that has always intrigued me. I love a good RPG, too. I am a sucker for anything that Bethesda throws my way. Finally, while I a more not a fan of the multiplayer, I love Trearch’s take on COD Zombies in the Black Ops series. Easter eggs make the fun with friends that much more enjoyable.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: I really like shooters. I don't really have a preference between first and third person though. As long as it has online co-op i'll play it and probably have a good time with it.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
l306l DaRkRoAsT: Just that this contest has been a blast, and a shout-out to you for all of the work that you put in to running an international, all-year event. Seriously, thank you and well done.
l306l PoRkRoAsT: Just a shoutout to my boosting crew in Boostopia, there are too many of you to name but you all know who you are. We have been through many grinds together and you guys make them bearable. Thanks to everyone running this contest, I can imagine it's alot of work so just know your hard work doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thanks

PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 26
Hello and welcome to the DIVE DIVE DIVE edition of the GTASC roundup. That's right, on tap for us right now is the annual Bean Dive event where we try to add all the games in our backlog to our gamertag by unlocking one achievement in each. Registration is open throughout the event so don't feel left out if you haven't started! This silliness runs through the 15th so click that register button, start your dive and see how low you can make that completion % go. After that, its recovery time and the helpful Bean Dive panel will remind you of how many achievements are left to regain your previous completion percentage. For me, its only a few hundred (I live a bean dive) but for some serious divers out there, thousands of achievements are required to reach that same plateau again. Kudos to all divers out there! One thing that's been noted is that you can play ANY games to recover. If you dived something and thought 'ewww, why did I buy this?' - you can leave it and cover those achievements with something more enjoyable. Its all about finding different ways to enjoy your gaming. Obviously this isn't for everyone as there are folks that desire to have a 100% completed card. If there's something you wanted to get in on but haven't started, you can always do a 1 game dive just to say you played along wink

The bonus on offer last Period for the Solo side was one that requires manual scanning so please bear with us as we check on the 'Year 1 Returns' winners.

Looking forward we have a new Team Bonus that will also entail scanning. Depending on your purchases and if you've been planning for this one to roll around or not, it may be difficult.

Are You LOST?
Both teammates must end the scoring period having unlocked 2 of the 6 numbers here using Gamerscore value (4 8 15 16 23 42).

That means you and your teammate both have to pop one of those weird gamerscore values and the gimmie (15G) unless you really want to show off your crazy gamerscore skills. wink

Its a manually scanned for bonus so please ensure the achievements are unlocked within the confines of the period itself, are not in games that you've hidden on TA and of course, are timestamped.

Of note, there is a filter option on the Easy Achievements page to sort through ones you have locked as well as the same option on the overall achievements page to see what games offer those values.

  • GAMES WITH GOLD:

Available Now
Xbox One: SMITE Gold Bundle (20 Gods and 50+ cosmetic items)

Xbox One: Death Squared
Xbox 360: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction

Honest Hearts are walking down Lonesome Road feeling those Old World Blues after finding Dead Money in the Gun Runners Arsenal. If that didn't spill the beans, we're playing Fallout: New Vegas this month!

812 are wandering the wasteland. 143 just walked out of the Vault and 35 experienced everything there is to do. All together, 5,332 achievements were unlocked for 109,430 Gamerscore worth 174,838 TA score.

No winners this period.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:
After the high last period, we've only got 1 respondent for you this period. We have one member of Nerf this! to chat with this week.
1) Did you play anything memorable last period?
Ow Nitram: NieR Automata, this game is truly unique and would have been a GOTY contender in a year without Zelda BOTW & Super Mario Odyssey. Amazing experience, highly recommended. Also Crash N’Sane Trilogy, decent game but the devs should really take lessons from Super Mario, last time I’ve played a Crash game was 20 years ago.

2) What pushed you to 1st place?
Ow Nitram: For the most part, the push was pretty much unintentional and had nothing to do with, I don’t know, for example, something like The Godz Reborn’s Overachiever streak from last year between October through November laugh In my case, I already plat’ed NieR on the PS4 last year so I know what to expect and was able to finish it quickly at the beginning of the week and take advantage of the over-inflated ratio of the game. The day after, Crash N’Sane Trilogy was released and again, since the game is 3000 GS and is quite hard, I was able to get a good TA boost from this one too due to the over-inflation which was a good thing since my partner was away from home during the weekend until Thursday. Two hours before the cut-off, I saw we were first with a 1000 TA lead and even so, I used 3000 TA of preload from Crash during the final hour. The REAL QUESTION is why? It’s quite simple, I just wanted my ratio to tank and try to get the lowest ratio during the following week.

3) What character ability do you enjoy using the most? (Any game/platform) What about it makes it better than other abilities?
Ow Nitram: Mario’s triple jump so I can hear him screaming YAHOO. Annoying, I know.

4) If you could recommend one Xbox One game to someone, what would it be and why?
Ow Nitram: Okami HD, this game is truly a masterpiece, a bit obscure outside of Japan for the mainstream audience. This is Zelda but with a dog/wolf named Amaterasu and his friend Issun, a trash-talking bug-sized you use to paint your attacks. The graphics with the watercolor/cel-shading style are wonderful. It’s one of the best game ever made and we’re lucky to have the HD port on XBO.

5) How do you feel about cosmetic items in games? Are they a gateway to lootboxes or do they support the developers?
Ow Nitram: I don’t play F2P games but I can understand that microtransactions coming from cosmetic items might be a huge part of their revenue, as long as the gameplay remains unaffected, I don’t see the issue. However, when you pay 80 bucks for a game (at least here in Canada) and the dev has the balls to put lootboxes/microtransactions for cosmetic items, it’s totally disgusting and greed at his finest. I remember when cosmetic items were…unlockable. Like, in Dead or Alive Ultimate, each character had 30 costumes : beat the game on the hardest difficulty to get costume X, beat survival mode to get costume Y, that was the good time and really fun to do. In case of full price retail AAA games, no way it support the devs. There are few exceptions where the cosmetic thing is handle well like Overwatch where you get lootboxes for leveling-up or doing the weekly 9 wins : not only you get a lot of rewards even without spending real money on lootboxes but the characters skins/designs are actually unique and not generic uninspired skins with color variations (Overwatch, consider yourself lucky that I’m praising you right now because you’re broken beyond belief with your matchmaking which is the worst of video games history).

6) Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming?
Ow Nitram: I watch a lot of TV/Movies and like hockey but most of my time and money for hobbies goes to gaming.

7) What is your proudest gaming accomplishment?
Ow Nitram: Achievements-wise, I’d say :

1K Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition : beating the bloody palace with Trish was pure torture.
4K Rare Replay for the Stampers Forever achievement
Complete Capcom Arcade Cabinet with all DLC : the difficulty of both Commando & Gun.Smoke is legendary, beating these two games was a gaming accomplishment.

Non-achievements-wise : the real Super Mario Bros. 2 released only in Japan on the Famicom disk system.

8) What game do you think is most deserving of a sequel? Why is it special?
Ow Nitram: We need either Banjo-Kazooie 3 (in other words, a real Banjo game) or a sequel to Conker, I don’t understand how someone can sit on those 2 IPs for so long and do nothing with both of them. They set a very clear standard on how 3D platformer should feel and still today, they remain the best with Super Mario 64. The difference is Mario still delivers 10/10 games but Banjo and Conker have been MIA for so long and a lot of indies devs are trying to cash grab on the 3D platforming genre nowadays. Rare must listen to the fans once and for all and stop being stubborn and beating a dead horse with Sea of Thieves, Phil Spencer always talks about Banjo, what are they waiting?

9) Do you collect or play and sell? Do you have any gaming related collections?
Ow Nitram: I buy and keep everything as a huge game collector (physical version, of course). I have a full collection of the 360 & One Japanese games library (still missing a lot of things PAL and a couple NA games). I’m a huge Nintendo fan and I’m collecting games on the NES, SNES, Famicom, Super Famicom, Gameboy, N64, Gamecube, DS/3DS, Wii/WiiU & Switch, both US and Japanese stuff. I also have a complete collection of the notorious Nintendo Amiibo figures.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Ow Nitram: Our last interview was 7 months ago I think, well it’s good to be back, thanks for the time you give to us. Shout out to the whole team of The Godz Reborn (Deathisland, JORAX, K4rn4ge, Momie), cutting on sleep to score, you guys were crazy. Also, since I thought last year we had one more interview but in the end, it was another team, congrats to Jimbot & his team for 2017 victory.

PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 25
Hello!

We've made it to July. Happy 4th of July for my American brothers and sisters. Thankfully we were given our new Games with Gold so we'll have a new list for you. With that said, we've had a TA event announced and have dove into a new Playlist game as well. We're in the quiet times now - waiting until the fall releases for the next big game releases - well, the ones that didn't push things into the Spring. Hopefully you have a good supply of games to keep yourself occupied as we move deeper into the contest.

We've eliminated the lion's share of participants. Scores are rising for the most part each period so the strain is surely being felt at this point. It is certainly interesting to see how the two contests are still linked in a manner of speaking. Bonuses that involve scoring increases on one side often produce a noticeable bump on the other thanks to the number of members in both events. The elimination line has climbed over the 4K mark for the 1st time now and the Team just had its highest cutoff yet. I've included an image that shows how the elimination line has been moving the last periods between the 2 contests.

Last period the bonus up for grabs was a bit of an ask - it required Teams to unlock the same amount of achievements and Gamerscore as the period before. An effort in coordination to be sure! Here's the teams that were able to accomplish this:
*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***
No Safety Benches were awarded, but we did lose a team from those that are in contention to earn them all. Those still in the running are:
*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

This period the bonus has swung back to the Solo side... and the task is not too troublesome. They are asked to spell the phrase 'Taking it back to basics' using the first character of freshly unlocked achievements. As with other bonuses similar to this, you can earn these letters in any order and without concern for unlocking extras in-between. Also worth noting is that they must be timestamped within the confines of the period. This is because we scan for these manually. We've also had a few bonuses go undetected because some participants hide completed games. If you do this, its not just you its hidden from wink

  • GAMES WITH GOLD:

Available Now
Xbox One: SMITE Gold Bundle (20 Gods and 50+ cosmetic items)
Xbox One: Assault Android Cactus (7 ratio and climbing!)
Xbox 360: Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (Easy 400G)

Available July 16th:
Xbox One: Death Squared Achievements
Xbox 360: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction Achievements

Quantum Break has reached the end of time so we've moved on to the next title chosen by the community. I hope you stocked up on Rad-Away and Stimpacks because we're off to the wastelands. That's right, Vault-dwellers far and wide are exploring Fallout: New Vegas. We're just a few days in so this is just a taste.

398 gamers may or may not use V.A.T.S. - 43 just put on their Pip Boy - 13 finished their wandering - 2,030 achievements were unlocked for 41,140 Gamerscore worth 65,543 TA score.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:
3 for 3 this period. We've got the Overachievers from both contests here to chat. Both members of The Chievsters as well as Exe the Hero.
1) What pushed you to 1st place?
Exe the Hero: I’m a teacher, so my play time during the school year is very limited. Since my last day was Monday, June 11th, I figured I’d just go super hardcore for my first week of summer break and see what I could make happen. Plus, I really like doing interviews! Unfortunately, one of my competitors that week didn’t mind using bonuses to stay in 1st, so I ended up in 2nd. After putting so much time and effort into getting the top spot, I wasn’t going to have wasted the momentum, so I went for it again and was able to secure a victory on my second attempt.

Size bit of information – I’ve been on Xbox since 2008 and have acquired nearly 600,000GS, and just about 10% of that came from my push these last two weeks…
HawkeyeBarry20: My teammate II7Mr Bubbles said he would be gone in the fall for several weeks and wouldn’t be able to play. He wanted to know what I thought about going all out for one week and being done with the contest. I thought that was a great idea because my wife and I are expecting our third child in August and then I wouldn’t be able to play as much if at all for a while.
II7Mr Bubbles: From the beginning of GTASC, my teammate and I were under no illusions of actually winning the competiton. We just had a good time competing and playing a bunch of games we’d otherwise probably never played. However, we decided to cash in our chips since we realized we’d both be busy with some other things in the near future and wouldn’t be able to stay in the competition. So our solution was to dive into the easy games and preloaded points we’d saved for one final week before bowing out the next. Unfortunately this means this is the end of GTASC for us this year. :(

2) Did you play anything you'd recommend?
Exe the Hero: I played almost nothing but Minecraft stacks and a ton of Neogeo games, so… yeah…
That said, I started Nier: Automata this week, and I'm only an hour in, but it's already awesome!
HawkeyeBarry20: SUPERHOT was pretty good, too many challenge modes with some very similar to each other but I’m very excited for the sequel. Clustertruck was incredibly frustrating and addicting. I really enjoyed the difficulty.
II7Mr Bubbles: I recently started Abzu and while its a very short, its an incredibly beautiful experience of a game.

3) What is the meaning behind your gamertag?
Exe the Hero: Long story here, so bear with me… Thanks to anybody who reads it!
My tag used to be Exe67. My online name has been Exe since the 90s when I began creating my first online accounts, but it was taken when I got my 360 in 2008 and I added a number just to keep Exe part of my online identity, even though I hated the number. Flash forward to 2013 when the first Injustice came out. My brother and I picked it up and we were playing online with a friend of his who also had a number in his name. He mentioned that he hated the number, but he couldn’t think of anything to do to keep his tag without a number in it. We brainstormed some ideas until I was inspired by WoW, which I hadn’t played in about a year at that point. In Wow, I had the title of “Death’s Demise.” (Shout out to anybody reading this who knows how much effort went into that title!) With this revelation, we came up with the idea of titles for our gamertags instead of something more typical. Injustice comes into play with the fact that we both mained “good” characters, or heroes, and thus… Exe the Hero! I instantly fell in love with it because the name Exe has over 20 years of history for me, and the title aspect of the tag is a throwback to a game that consumed almost 4 years of my life.
HawkeyeBarry20: Hawkeye because I live in Iowa and a huge fan of the Hawkeyes. Barry because a movie I really liked 10 or more years ago was Beerfest. My favorite character from the movie was named Barry and lastly, 20 because that’s how old I was when I created my gamertag.
II7Mr Bubbles: I’m a big fan of Bioshock, so Mr Bubbles is a reference to the big daddies in the game. One of my favorite enemies.

4) What is your take on a new console? Do you think its too early to start a new cycle?
Exe the Hero: My wallet says it’s too soon lol, but when you figure 360 was replaced after 8 years, 2021 doesn’t seem too unlikely for the Xbox Two. Plus, with the ecosystem Microsoft has been building, I have faith that the console will be 100% BC with all currently available OG and 360 and all One games. I feel like consoles are going to go the route of phones, where a new, more powerful one comes out every couple years, but your old hardware will stay relevant as long as possible. I think if it goes that direction, you’ll be able to upgrade every couple years if you choose, but you’ll never lose out on any exclusive games, only the latest graphical fidelity.
HawkeyeBarry20: It’s never too early to plan ahead, I’m glad they’re thinking of the future. I think VR will be the future but the distant future. I’m worried the new Xbox will try to include VR like the Kinect and it will be another mess.
II7Mr Bubbles: Honestly, I’d expect a new console no later than 2021, although with the X, I think extending the One’s life cycle a few years beyond that would be fine with a most people.

5) Is there anything in particular that's been announced that excites you? Call me crazy but I'm ready for a space-themed adventure from Bethesda.
Exe the Hero: I’m actually thrilled that Tales of Vesperia remastered was showcased during the Xbox E3 presentation. Tales of is my favorite RPG series, but I read somewhere that the creator said he’d never bring another game to Xbox. I’m hoping that the announcement of the remaster coming to Xbox One means that old wounds have healed and we’ll get a proper new game on the console soon! I’m also really looking forward to Shining Resonance Refrain, as it looks to have the same Tales of battle style.
I’m also thrilled for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Origins is one of the best games I’ve played in quite some time, so I was nervous that there would be a two-year gap before the new game. I’ve already changed my gamerpic to Kassandra after having Lightning from FFXIII for close to 10 years, so you can tell that I’m very much looking forward to this game!
Shadow of the Tomb raider is also high on my list because the reboot series has been fantastic, but I’m a little apprehensive since it’s being handled by a new dev. I’m sure it’ll be great, though! (Can you tell I really like badass female protagonists?)
HawkeyeBarry20: Overall I think Death Stranding and Spider-Man look to be a cut above the rest, unfortunately I don’t own a PlayStation. For games that can be played on the Xbox I would say Gears of War 5 and Cyberpunk 2077.
II7Mr Bubbles: My first open world game was The Elder Scrolls 4 which I fell in love with so I’m probably abnormally excited for The Elder Scrolls 6 as well as whatever Starfield ends up being. Aside from those, Cyberpunk 2077, Spiderman, and The Last of Us 2 are all great looking games.

6) What drives you to play game after game? Gamerscore, competition, anticipation of the next great game (and slogging through backlog to reach it...)
Exe the Hero: There’s honestly so many games out there that I’d love to play, but I know I’ll never have the time to get to some of them. So my motivation is just to play as many as I can in what time I have available. That’s complicated with GTASC, especially during the school year. If I only have an hour to play on Thursday evening and I haven’t played since Monday, I constantly argue with myself on if I play something I WANT to play, or if I pop in an easy game to stay alive in the competition. I’m very competitive by nature, so GTASC points always win out, but as a result, I’m missing out of games that I’d actually enjoy. That’s not to say I dislike GTASC, though! While it has caused me to play a lot of horrible games, I’ve actually discovered quite a few gems because of their promise of easy points, so the trade off is there. In 2016 I made it to the final 10 in solo, then I took 2017 to play for pleasure, so I think I’ll repeat that cycle again and make both my competitive side and my hobbyist side happy.
HawkeyeBarry20: I care more about gamerscore than I have before so that drives me a bit but mostly it’s trying to find that next amazing game. After playing so much crap for this contest I’m really looking forward to playing what I hope will be real quality games.
II7Mr Bubbles: I love exploring the many worlds and stories that video games offer as well as this year where, my focus has been on getting to 250,000. Almost there!

7) Do you prefer to use a guide straight off when playing a game or rather play it as it comes then clean up with a guide if needed?
Exe the Hero: It depends of why I’m playing the game. If I’ve purchased the game exclusively for points, I’ll follow the guide right from the main menu. If it’s a game I’m playing for fun, I’ll see if there are any missables and make sure I can get those, but otherwise won’t pull up the guide until I’m in the cleanup stage. Growing up, I’d always buy the strategy guides for games, and then it occurred to me one day that doing so takes all the challenge out of a game, so I’ve done my best to experience games for myself since then.
HawkeyeBarry20: I usually look at a collectibles guide, always if multiple playthroughs are required. This way I can speed through my second playthrough and usually enjoy the game more like Ryse. During this contest I used a guide a lot more than I typically would because I’m just trying to finish games as quick as I can.
II7Mr Bubbles: So this mostly depends on the game’s quality. If I’m mostly concerned with the gamerscore, I’ll just follow along with a guide. A game that I really enjoy, on the other hand, I will play through without much regard for achievements until a second playthough.

8) Who is your favorite villain across any game/platform? What about them makes them stand out to you?
Exe the Hero: I don’t even have to think about this one - Arthas Menethil, The Lich King. I like him because he has a human side to him. If you follow the Warcraft lore, you can follow his descent into madness and evil, but everything he did to start down that path was in the form of a difficult decision that he only did because he thought it was the right thing to do. All those horrible things he did, yet we can almost sympathize with him because it did take a toll of him and he did what he believed was right. By the time you finally get to battle him in WoW, he’s completely lose his humanity and is pure evil, so you feel righteous in taking him down, yet there’s also a sadness because you’re killing who used to be one of Azeroth’s greatest heroes.
I’m sure he’s not the only character ever written in such a way, but he’s the only one that I’ve ever experienced. We have so many cliché bad guys that are just “he wants to take of the world, kill him!” that it was refreshing and much more thought-provoking to have somebody who didn’t start off as evil.
HawkeyeBarry20: Tough question, I really don’t feel many games have a good villain. Kefka from Final Fantasy 6 stands out, probably because of all the success he has in the game. *** SPOILER**** Atlas was also very memorable because of the twist and his plan. The patience he needed for his plan was incredible.
II7Mr Bubbles: GLaDOS. Amazing dialog and one of the most memorable villains in my opinion.

9) If you could ask Microsoft to add any game to the Backwards Compatible collection (Xbox or 360) which game would it be? What about that game makes it special?
Exe the Hero: For the original Xbox, I’d love to play Azurik again. I am aware the game didn’t get great reviews, but I played the crap out of it growing up. I’m not sure I’d still enjoy it, but I’d pay $10 to replay a game that I remember quite fondly.
For 360, I actually can’t think of anything because I still have my 360 hooked up and regularly use it. Maybe Tales of Vesperia, so I could stack the EU version? But I feel like I’ll already be playing the remaster, so even though it’s one of my favorite games, I don’t think I’d want to commit the time to play through it twice more…
HawkeyeBarry20: I think Microsoft has done a great job with making so many games backwards compatible so my list is very short. I would say Final Fantasy 13, I enjoyed the game but mostly because I was grinding levels before taking on the final boss and I ended up putting the game down and never picked it up again. I sold the game with my 360 to buy the Xbox One so I left myself with a cliffhanger.
II7Mr Bubbles: Xbox has been doing a great job with releasing backwards compatible games so most of the ones I want are already available. However, one underrated gem I’d love to jump into again is Brutal Legend. I really loved the unique aesthetic of the world, the humor, and of course the music. A sequel would be even better though.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Exe the Hero: As a teacher, I get very little recognition for what I do (anybody reading this from around the world, teachers get treated like shit in The United States…), so as silly as it sounds, this interview was a nice way for me to receive some acknowledgement for my endeavors! So I’d just like to add a sincere thank you to everybody who took the time to read what I had to say! smile

Oh, and please move the cutoff for GTASC back to the weekend. During the school year, I’m completely helpless for the last 14 hours before the cutoff when things are the most hectic…
HawkeyeBarry20: I want to thank my teammate II7Mr Bubbles for being awesome during all of this and to Planting for putting on this great contest. This was the first time I’ve gotten serious about seeing how far I could go in this contest and I have to say how blown away I was to realize how many short games one has to have let alone the money to buy them and time to play them. I greatly underestimated what would be needed in this contest and this is just the end of June. Best of luck to the rest of the field.
II7Mr Bubbles: I’d like to thank planting42 for all the effort he puts into GTASC as well as everyone involved in TA for a great gaming site. I’ve been here for around 9 years and it’s continually improving. Much luck to everyone still in the competition. It’s only going to get harder from here!
