PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 34
It feels like its been a long week... oh wait - its because its been 2! That's right, we have just experienced our first extended period this year. Go figure its the time no one was asking or even talking about the issues - but unfortunately Xbox LIVE decided to play up to the point where the Pro scanners weren't working well and the other scanners weren't working at all - at that magic hour. As many noticed, eliminations were adjusted to compensate for the 2 weeks (to preserve the contest's end date) which resulted in some scrambles after the bonus deadline passed. Let's cross our collective fingers that this is the first and last time we have to deal with this kind of issue.

So with 2 weeks of combined scoring, we sure have some stuff to chat about. We'll check in with the TA Playlist, UHH, Games with Gold and upcoming releases and of course - our Overachievers! I also did some number crunching to see how popular/engaging the bonuses have been for each contest to date.

Let's start with what's interesting on the release calendar. Thanks to that doubled up period, I missed a week so here's hoping you have a source other than this blog for interesting tidbits wink

First up on the release calendar is Neonwall which is a very vibrant action puzzle game. The point of the game is to score points with a ball but the trick is you don't actually interact with it directly but with the environment itself. Matching colors and planning ahead seem to be big factors in what looks to be a fast paced game. We'll find out September 13th.

Coming up on September 14th we have Razed which looks like a speedrunner for platformers. A fast paced race to the finish but with some pretty crazy environments judging from what they had to show last year. They are talking about 60 levels in 6 distinct themed areas with boss battles. Gotta go fast!

A genre that seems to be making a return has caught my attention - FMV. We have another take on the horizon, this time its in the vein of a horror. A collaboration between Ubisoft and Elijah Wood's studio SpectreVision, Transference looks ready to terrorize when it releases September 18th. Its an adventure through the digital memories of a family seen through their different perspectives. We'll have to see how this blend of FMV and storytelling works out.

Ratalaika Games has become synonymous with speedy completions so this next game is fairly likely to fit the same mold. League of Evil was described by one TAer as being 'like Super Meat Boy but for those of us that suck at SMB.' It looks like an action platformer with punches. 140 levels with challenges, collectibles and chiptunes will grace our screens September 19th.

A long time coming, Hover is finally about to arrive on consoles. With its gameplay a nod to Jet Set Radio, it offers open world gameplay on and offline in what can only be described as a neon paradise. Its a crazy parkour game with high-speed races and custom challenges. Assemble your team on September 19th.

We are now in Round 3 of the Group Stage of the Ultimate Head to Head Challenge. That means after this week and the next, the top 256 based on points will move into the knockout rounds. Right now, that sweet spot is just outside of 39 points. The top few 38 point-holders with high cumulative ratio are the ones currently sitting in the bottom 3 spots in that 256.

Kudos to the following 2 TAers for their 35 points through achievement wins alone.

  • BONUS RECAP:

Gotta Get Em All was the bonus on tap for Individuals last period. Its one that requires scanning and I expect a decent amount of participation given everyone had 2 weeks to unlock 15 achievements flagged as 'Collectible'. Please bear with us as we get this looked at.

The Team side is now looking at a similar bonus. 'The New Jingle' which asks each team member to unlock 10 at least achievements flagged as 'Rare' is up for grabs. Please remember that these will lose their flag as they are won by more members of the overall community so our scan will only reflect those flagged as Rare when the period ends.

Looking a bit deeper at bonuses... Here's the bonuses to date, the number that won them, the number that were eligible and the win% with the most and least won bonuses highlighted. First the Solo side, then the Team side.
External image

External image

The most popular Bonus for the Solo side was 'Bonus Soda' with 90.22% of the eligible gamers winning the bonus. For that matter, only 9 individuals didn't win it. That one required folks to earn at least one achievement with the word 'Bonus', 'Badge' or 'Mark' in its name. Well, ACA NeoGeo games made this a gimmie so we offered a cosmetic badge for those that managed to pull this off without using an ACA NeoGeo game. Most opted for the bonus cosmetic for the extra difficulty.

The least won bonus for the Solo side was Party Like Its 2018 with only 7.57%. That was the 1st bonus offered and it seems more were interested in a gamerscore bump over a bonus first off. It also may be due to the fact it made people unlock something that wasn't divisible by 5. There's something about keeping your gamerscore 'even' that drives people to the point of 'fixing' it whenever possible.

So, to date, the most popular bonus for the Team side was Blast From the Past which asked folks to dive back into their Xbox 360 games. That means either loads still are playing on the ol' boxes or they are making good use of Backwards Compatibility. 88.35% of eligible teams dove into their older games to give this bonus the win. Interestingly enough, it just barely edges out Not Normal which asked teams to end with an 'odd' (not divisible by 5) gamerscore and achievement earned total. (87.23%) This compares interestingly against the least won Solo bonus.

The least popular Team bonus was Deja Vu which asked teams to end with the same gamerscore and achievement earned values as the period before. It was won by 21.74% of the eligible teams. That is much more than the solo side's least won bonus - and certainly not the 1st one offered. Even though the 1st Team bonus asked them to score much higher than required to survive that period, 25.46% of the eligible teams still went for it.

A quiet place.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:

This period we have both members of Shadow Hearts with us to chat.
1) What pushed you to 1st place?
Kugare: Vacilia.
Vacilia: It was a good chance in that week and we just took the opportunity.

2) Did you play anything you'd recommend?
Kugare: I can recommend Don't Sink to everyone who need a fast score boost. It was kinda fun and it's impossible to lose if you attack with your captain and spam the attack button all the time. Far Cry 3 was a game i didn't played for the contest during this period and was i glad i could complete it with our leading position. I usually use a lead to play something good or something that takes a little bit longer to complete. Otherwise i would lose my mind. I'm currently playing Far Cry 5 and now it's super hard to play something else for some easy/fast points and I'm bit worried about the next elimination. This game is so freaking good and they changed so many things to make this series even better. <3 - If any of you guys is considering buying it - DO IT and you will not regret it!
Vacilia: No, not really.

3) Is there any game or genre you won't put on your gamertag?
Kugare: Everything i can't complete, expect it's a game i want to play at all cost like Final Fantasy, GTA, Bioshock and so on. I try to stay above a 98% completion rate and aim for 99%. This means i avoid games with unobtainables or achievements that are way too hard for me. On the other side i would play every genre, as long a can complete the game. I'm a typical achievement wh*re i guess? Anyway... i don't like the sport genre and you can't find my games from that genre on my gamertag. Avoiding this genre also had a big benefit. I can ignore many server closures and have less time pressure to complete something.
Vacilia: Fifa I guess, but well, you never know.

4) What do you consider your proudest gaming accomplishment?
Kugare: That's a good question. Maybe having all achievements in all Assassins Creed Games? Or the completion of some harder racing games like Sega Rally Revo, Ridge Racer 6 or The Crew? I'm not a gamer with crazy gaming skills and i'm also not a ratio hunter, that unlock many achievements that other people couldn't unlock without skill and patience. For me there is no reason to be proud of anything i reached achievement wise, as sad as it sounds, but there is something I'm beeing proud of that has something to do with gaming + my personality. I'm always a very friendly and helpful guy and i do my best to keep a cool head during boosting sessions, even if someone have trouble with the game or if there is a frustrating situation. Instead of beeing aggressive or using swear words, i try to take it with humor. Giving people a helping hand and a great boosting/gaming experience since many years is my proudest accomplishment. =)
Vacilia: Proud would not be the right word, but I'm glad I didn't give up on receiving Dedicated Knight (Portal Knights) .

5) What is your favorite genre to play? What about it keeps your interest?
Kugare: I really love racing games for several reasons. In many cases you don't have to use a guide/walkthrough and there are rarely collectibles. After a day full of work it's pretty relaxing to just play a career mode without caring about much else than just winning races. Of course you still have to check a solution here and there, but more for the clean up part of the game. Beside of that i like chasing down best times, tuning, car customization and learning to master a track.
Vacilia: There is no favorite genre, since playing Xbox games I discovered a lot of nice games, where I wouldn't have thought I liked them or the genre at all.

6) What would you call your most memorable boss fight? What about it makes you remember it so well to this day?
Kugare: As a huge fan of the Dark Souls series i could list many bosses, but i couldn't decide which one is the most memorable one. So i will go with a different answer from a way older game: The fight against Sephiroth in FF7. Seeing his 2 minute long Super Nova attack was one of the earliest wtf moments in my gaming career.
Vacilia: Nothing outstanding.

7) Is there one game you'd recommend that you think was overlooked by most of the folks here on TA? What about that game makes it special?
Kugare: One game made my laughs many times this years and it's called Zenith. What it makes to specials are the funny dialogs and dozens of game/roleplay references and the lovely main characters. The game takes itself not seriously at all and if you love the roleplay genre you should give this a try!
Vacilia: Can't think of one.

8) Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming?
Kugare: To be honest: gaming consume most of my freetime at the moment and i plan to give my other hobbies more time in the future. There is always time to watch something on youtube or checking out some news on news sites to keep me informed. In the past i spent thousand of hours with programming and that's one of the hobbies that suffer more and more from my achievement addiction. My goal is to stay as long as possible in the contest, even if it means my wife and me have to sacrifice much of our freetime this year, but we already planned a lot of other time intensive stuff outside of gaming we going to do after the elimination.
Vacilia: Administration and playing on Kugare's and my Browsergame-Server.

9) If you could remaster any game from a previous console to the Xbox One - what would it be and why?
Kugare: Kingdom Hearts! I'm waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3 such a long time and it would be so sweet to play the other ones as a small warm up.
Vacilia: The Shadow Hearts Series, because it's so fantastic, horror role play with nice creatures and a humour that I enjoy very much.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Kugare: Welcome to the Bliss! ;*
Vacilia: Congratz to everyone who made it this far in the competition.

PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 33
Howdy boys and girls of all ages. Welcome to the insomniac version of the GTASC recap. Did we get the Sunset Overdrive devs to drop by for a chat? That would have been awesome, but no - it just means that I have completely slaughtered my sleep schedule and now resemble a zombie. Its not worth it, trust me... brains don't taste so good.

In all seriousness, we're here to chat with the Overachievers of Period 32, check in with the TA Playlist and UHH4, see what's on tap for Games with Gold (September was announced) and of course, dive into some upcoming releases that you may be interested in.

Let's start with a quick dive into what we have on the horizon for game releases.

If you are in the mood for a large scale, turn based role play game, you may want to see what Divinity: Original Sin 2 has to offer. Fans of the previous game will likely delight as fans have basically said this improves on the goodness of the previous game. Featuring 4 player online co-op and 2 player local co-op, this should offer some good times with your friends. This quote from the developer has my interest, "Very much like a board-game, you can really mess with each-other. Poison healing potions and feed them to your friends, or steal things from NPCs in the world and plant them in your friends' bags so they get arrested." The game is currently in Game Preview which allows for the first chapter to be played if purchased. It releases fully on August 31st.

Sharing the same release date is what seems to be a take on Paperboy of old. The VideoKid doesn't offer much for a story but apparently lets you make bank by tossing VHS tapes into mailboxes and through windows. How else would you deliver pirated content in the 80's? Sharpen your delivery and avoidance skills in 2 days time.

I'm not a huge fan of rougelikes (the genre that typically tasks you with making multiple runs with a mechanism that unlocks overarching skills to improve each run over time) but this one mixes it with a genre I love - space exploration. Genesis Alpha One seems to be a one stop shop for space legs combat along with resource gathering and management while you search for a new world for humanity. It seems you can take a very hands-on approach or sit back and let clones handle the dirty work while you concentrate on loftier goals. This final frontier will release September 4th. Of note, some online retailers are showing the physical copy as releasing January 31st.

I'll just touch on this one since there's a pretty good chance we've all heard about it by now... PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds gets a full release (with achievements that are said to be retroactive) in just a few days time! That's right, there's a plane you're expected to jump out of arriving September 4th.

If you are into turning just about everything and anything on a race car and have been waiting for something along the lines of a Midnight Club - Super Street: The Game may be worth checking out. These guys are teasing over 700 parts from real brands where you can alter the interior, exterior and of course - what's under the hood! We'll have to see how this one pans out... its a much more ambitious undertaking than this dev has done in the past. You can hit the streets on September 4th.

Just a few more short days to get some progress in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary before the playlist switches to Red Dead Redemption next month. Show the Covenant who means business one more time soldier!

10,033 Master Chiefs are out there. 586 donned the helmet for the 1st time and 59 are just getting started. 111,486 achievements have been unlocked worth 1,073,455 gamerscore for 2,712,276 TA score.

We're now into the 1st of 4 rounds of the Group Stage of the event. This is where you want to amass as many points as you can through unlocking achievements (1 point each) and match wins (5 points each) to earn a spot in the playoffs. The top 256 based on points will enter the knockout rounds and the rest are able to continue getting matches in a just for fun format - and of course another 8 shots at unlocking enough achievements to snag the Community Challenge. For those that may have missed the announcement, if you get 10 achievements in any of your lists (not simply 10 achievements throughout the event.. 10 on one list) or more - you will earn a new level to your badge. Don't worry, this is not the last Community Challenge this year wink

  • BONUS RECAP:

Show Me That Killer Instinct was the bonus on tap for Teams last period and the requirement was actually relatively simple considering what has been on offer as of late. Teams had to end the scoring period with at least 200 achievements unlocked. It was a relatively popular bonus as well with 26 teams of the 33 that survived earning it. 2 of the 3 eliminated teams would have also earned this one.
*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

This period the bonus is for the Individual side. They don't get quite the same bonus as they have been tasked with Gotta Get Em All which will require them to earn 15 or more achievements flagged as 'Collectible'. This is a special bonus that has to be scanned after the end of the period so please bear with us as we get that taken care of. As usual with this kind of bonus, please ensure the achievements you use are timestamped (since the contest ignores offline achievements) within the timeframe of the period itself. Additionally, please keep in mind that TA may reflag achievements as part of their daily work. I'd really recommend you snag one or two more just in case something gets moved around.

A quiet place.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:

This period we have both members of Cookies & Orange Juice with us to chat this week.
1) What pushed you to 1st place?
Bedholm: Our strategy this year has always been to score around 2k more than the previous week's drop and by doing that we stayed in the top 5 and in the morning we decided to just go for it.
Vapor x Chaos: Last week, we went with our normal plan of aiming for about 2k above the previous week’s drop. With drop being in the mid-5k's this week, most teams didn't really push at the top. On the morning of drop we saw ourselves inside the top 3 so we decided to push it to the top and grab the badge.

2) Did you play anything you'd recommend?
Bedholm: Metro: Last light and Get Even were both fun games.
Vapor x Chaos: Scoring wise, not at all. I did enjoy playing Dead Rising 2: Off the Record as it was a game that I used to love when I was younger. Also Rocket League is just amazing.

3) If you could bring any game from any platform to Xbox - what would it be and why?
Bedholm: Roller Coaster Tycoon I guess. Whenever I'm annoyed with console gaming going back to roller coaster tycoon makes me happy.
Vapor x Chaos: The upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for sure. I played the older ones when I was younger and I loved them and with Nintendo bringing back every character, it's definitely a game that I will be picking up.

4) What are the origins of your gamertag?
Bedholm: My real name is Bradley Edholm so just take the B and my last name and that's it. I've had friends call me that for years before I started gaming and I've just stuck with it ever since.
Vapor x Chaos: My gamertag came from a "clan" my friends and I started when we were still in like eighth grade. There were like 15 of us and I just haven't thought of a good name to change to, but I'm expecting myself to change it pretty soon.

5) Who is your favorite hero across any game/platform? What about them makes them stand out to you?
Bedholm: No clue
Vapor x Chaos: Captain Price will always be a legend to me. Modern Warfare 2 was probably the first game that had me hooked to my Xbox nonstop and he was awesome in it.

6) What is your favorite kind of achievement?
Bedholm: Anyone that makes me do something really bizarre and fun, but not grindy or overly luck based.
Vapor x Chaos: My favorite kind of achievements are either having to complete an existential side mission within a game, like an Easter Egg in COD. I enjoy having to play for fun while also having a goal set out to do.

7) Which achievement did you have the most fun unlocking?
Bedholm: No clue
Vapor x Chaos: If you looked at my achievements unlocked last week, nothing there really seemed enjoyable. I had the most fun getting the Rank Up achievement in Rocket League but the most fulfilling thing I did score wise was clean up the few achievements I had left In Minecraft: Xbox 360 edition.

8) Do you have any current gaming goals?
Bedholm: 1st place for XB1 FPS leaderboards. Given that I really started gaming when the XB1 came out going for the overall leaderboards is a little out of reach.
Vapor x Chaos: To be honest, I don't really set a bar or goal for myself when it comes to achievements. I play to play and get as much Gamerscore as possible. The only goal I guess I have is to keep my achievement streak alive but who knows how much longer I expect to keep going with it.

9) Do you have any hobbies outside of video games?
Bedholm: I'm addicted to roller coasters so whenever I travel it's to ride them. They've been my passion my entire life before anything else ever mattered to me.
Vapor x Chaos: Outside of video games I help run and play in a local sixty team basketball league and I'm currently a student planning on studying psychology. I spend most of my free time at the basketball gyms or watching The Office on Netflix.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Bedholm: Congrats to everyone still left in the competition.
Vapor x Chaos: I first joined GTASC in 2015 and back then I barely played Xbox. I'm proud of how far I've mad it this year and couldn't have done it without my teammate so major props to him. Special shoutout to my boosting partner AngryCaucasians for putting up with all the nonsense I make him install and sit through. Finally, thank you to planting for running such a fun competition for all of TA to participate in and enjoy. I must say, I was a huge doubter of the duo concept but it really worked well. Good luck to every one else still alive in the contest and happy scoring!

PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 32
Howdy!

Period 32 has come and passed so its time for another dive into the stats. That wouldn't be complete unless we checked into the events running on TrueAchievements, some new games that may be worth a look and of course have a chat with our Overachievers from Period 31.

First off, here's a peek at a sample of the upcoming releases for the next week:

If you've got a fondness for your inner monkey *ahem* ape, this may be worth a peek. Continuing last week's trend of ports from other platforms, Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier was released about a year ago for PlayStation. So far it seems its a 15 hour or less adventure in the Planet of the Apes universe. it didn't perform well on its first release so we'll have to see if this take is worth more than the 59% on Metacritic the PS release received. The Last Frontier is available to explore August 24th.

We're used to the yearly sports titles being a year ahead - like car years. Well, that isn't how it works for Codemasters. Its 2018 so you get F1 2018! Although I really want to like this as I'm a big fan of both Arcade and Simulation racing games... these have tended to be VERY technical games. If you are looking for a relatively authentic representation of F1 racing, this is probably a great game for you. If you, like me, have issues keeping your high powered race car on the track, this may be a frustrating experience. We don't have the achievements on site yet so we'll have to wait to see what we have in store when this releases on August 24th.

Was XCOM your jam but you also enjoy a deeper story? Phantom Doctrine may be worth looking deeper at. Panned as a turn-based strategy game, you take the helm of a secret organization called the Cabal. The fate of humanity rests on your shoulders as you explore this world set in the Cold-War era of the mid-80's. Will you be able to unravel the conspiracy? Find out more when it releases on August 24th.

For those that enjoy an older time, explore the Egyptian civilization like never before. Fight against mummies and other monsters while solving traps and searching for treasure in this 4 player adventure. Enjoy this tounge-in-cheek game Solo or co-op with friends. The biggest takeaway I have from their trailers - the announcer makes the game laugh Don't let Lara have all the fun, explore some crypts yourself with the Strange Brigade on August 28th.

  • GAMES WITH GOLD:

Grab everything you want for Forza Horizon 2 before it gets delisted. Don't miss out!

Available Now:
Xbox One: Forza Horizon 2
Xbox One: For Honor
Xbox 360: Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two

We still have a week or so to wait eagerly for the new announcement.

We're nearing the end of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary month here in the Playlist. Hopefully you were able to revisit this great game which kicked off the entire Halo universe. If you haven't, you have until the end of the month to join in with either the 360 variant or the mammoth Xbox One Master Chief Collection.

6,520 Master Chiefs are out there. 349 donned the helmet for the 1st time and 45 are just getting started. 73,941 achievements have been unlocked worth 719,070 gamerscore for 1,844,254 TA score.

The votes have been tallied and its now official, we're headed to the old west. That's right, its time to kill chupacabras in Red Dead Redemption next month. Join in the discussion with the community on the announcement article: TA Playlist Game for September 2018 Announced

Registration is closed and we're now in the stage where our compatibility scores are being calculated. For the 1600 or so that entered, you'll find your first matchup (and chance at the attached Community Challenge) this weekend!

  • BONUS RECAP:

Only 8 were able to snag the elusive Deja Vu bonus which asked gamers to end the period with the exact same gamerscore and achievement earned totals as the period before. Its been a cycle of technical bonuses and this one really was asking quite a lot from folks that may have also been on a team. Kudos to all of you!

This period we have turned our attention back to the Team side. Thankfully, its not a crazy technical challenge, but it is a challenge nonetheless. Teams are asked to Show Me That Killer Instinct which asks them to earn 200 or more achievements as a team. It may be Telltale time!

A quiet place.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:

Just a Guy in a Vest was the team that took the Team leaderboard by storm with Unky TimFU also topping the Solo side. Without further ado, here they are:
1) Did you play anything memorable last period?
Mr Second Place - Although not too many achievements were won in it, I've got to say I was pleasantly surprised by Dead Cells!
Unky TimFU - WICK - They should probably get Banner to play this in the next Avengers if he's still having Hulk issues.

2) What pushed you to 1st place?
Mr Second Place - My partner in the contest (and brother) is the biggest reason for the push! He took solo top honors last week, and it propelled us up the ladder. I just did my best to keep pace with him!
Unky TimFU - I wanted to go for it at least once. That would be the last week in a while that I could actually give enough of my time for a solid attempt. I was also hoping that people in the team competition were more focused on the "Party Like Its..." team bonus than 1st place.

3) What character ability do you enjoy using the most? (Any game/platform) What about it makes it better than other abilities?
Mr Second Place - I am a fan of the stealth mechanic! I'm terrible at it (like a bull in a china shop at times), but still extremely satisfying to use stealth tactics to take out your enemies!
Unky TimFU - I don't really have much of an answer to this one. I prefer to take a stealthy approach to anything whenever it's possible. Unless overpowered counts as an ability.

4) If you could recommend one Xbox One game to someone, what would it be and why?
Mr Second Place - I play so many it's hard to go with just one. If I were recommending a game to a first time Xbox buyer, I'd probably go with Skyrim or Fallout. But so much good stuff out there, and so much more coming down the pipeline!
Unky TimFU - I stacked Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor with the three completions (360, XBONE, GOTY). I enjoyed it just as much all three times. It never gets old for me.

5) How do you feel about cosmetic items in games? Are they a gateway to lootboxes or do they support the developers?
Mr Second Place - I'm not a fan of paid cosmetic items personally. I know the sale of these items can support the devs, but I'd prefer to see them work on my in game content rather than costumes. Loot boxes are a slippery slope, too often because pay to win!
Unky TimFU - I don't feel anything about cosmetic items. I bought a few in ESO though.

6) What is your proudest gaming accomplishment?
Mr Second Place - Getting my first "press/media" credentials for a gaming convention (PAX East)! Felt great to see that media badge!
Unky TimFU - I don't hang around with pride too often due to my insane amount of easy completions. I was pretty happy with myself when I completed those combat and predator challenges in Arkham Asylum and City though.

7) Suddenly your disc tray jams and you can only play arcade/indie titles. Chose 5 games that would keep you sane.
Mr Second Place - I am 100% digital on all my games (1000+ now). But, I love the indie titles: Dead Cells, NBA Playground(or Jam, Street, any NBA really), Party Hard, Peggle(1 or 2), and I'm a sucker for anything TellTale!
Unky TimFU - Torchlight, Child of Light, Slender: The Arrival, and Bastion twice (360 +XBONE).

8) What game have you spent the most time playing ever and what about it keeps your interest?
Mr Second Place - Probably Skyrim, mostly because it's come out on absolutely everything! But still remains a very deep experince everytime!
Unky TimFU - I only play games in a way that will get me the completion as quickly as possible. I'll take the scenic route when it comes to the Elder Scrolls though. I also played FF7 too much back in the day.

9) Where do you get your gaming news? Its important to stay on top of our hobby.
Mr Second Place - I get a lot from Trueachievements obviouly, but also follow many of the other sites and through Twitter. I actually am a co-host of a gaming podcast on Youtube called The OMG Hour, so I need to stay informed!
Unky TimFU - This site and Mr Second Place.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Mr Second Place - Been absolutley loving the contest! I am an achievement hunter at heart, so any excuse to push the habit! Honestly didn't think we'd still be in it at this point! So many tough competitor out there pushing us each week!
Unky TimFU - I just want to thank my partner and everyone involved with this competition. I started a lifestyle change/diet back in period one. I've now lost over 50 pounds since January. This competition has played a huge part in my success. It keeps me distracted in my downtime at a time where I would usually be snacking/overeating. Thanks a bunch and good luck to everyone left in the competition.

PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 31
Howdy!

Its that time when we take a look back at all that we've done over the previous week... as well as look forward to what is on the release horizon, check out what's happening event-wise on TrueAchievements and of course check in with the Overachievers of the event.

First let's look at the upcoming games. The big burst of AAA is still quite a ways off but that doesn't mean there's nothing worth playing coming out. Here's a sample of some upcoming releases:

Already a hit on PSVR, now us Xbox gamers get to Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Its a party game that may even defeat the TA solo players. It revolves around 1 person who is in front of a bomb and others who have access to manuals that explain how to defuse it. The catch? The players with the knowledge can't see the bomb. Reading through the discussion on it makes it sound as though you can only complete so much solo. Some of the harder bombs apparently require multiple solvers helping to defuse the bomb. Don't count out the TA community from cheesing this yet but as it stands it may actually have to be played as designed. Imagine that shock You and your friends can have a blast on August 17th.

The next title is another port we're getting a bit late - this time one that made a huge splash on the Switch. We can't play Super Smash Bros but we do get Brawlout which seems to be a damned good game. It appears to be a polished game visually featuring several special guest fighters from Hyper Light Drifter, Guacamele!, Yooka-Laylee and Dead Cells. With online play and up to 4 players, this promises to be a super smash hit come August 21st.

Not to be stood up, we have a duo of ports, re-imagined and brought back for a new generation up next. Shenmue and Shenmue II have been remastered for modern consoles although they are themselves quite dated. The original game released on the Dreamcast with the sequel releasing on Dreamcast and the original Xbox. Its an action-adventure with fighting based firmly on the Virtua Fighter series. Join Ryo Hazuki in his quest to avenge the death of his father on August 21st.

Our final feature for this blog will be All-Star Fruit Racing. Are you looking for a vibrant Kart racer? Have you wanted to devastate your friends with pineapple bombs and cherry bolos? You can race against AI, local friends or online on 20 tracks. What makes this stick out as different? You don't pick up weapons as you normally do in Kart racers... instead you pick up fruit scattered on the track to fill up your onboard juicer. Unleash the power in the shape of 32,000 fruit-themed combinations. Orange you picking this one up when it releases August 21st?

  • GAMES WITH GOLD:

Some juicy titles this month but its certainly worth noting that to date when a Forza title featured in the program, it was declared 'end of life' shortly afterward. If you plan on completing Forza Horizon 2, it may be wise to snag the DLC before it gets removed.

Available Now:
Xbox One: Forza Horizon 2
Xbox One: For Honor
Xbox 360: Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two

We're mid-month so we are looking at another 2 weeks or so before they announce September's titles.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is what the community is working on this month. Feel free to join in using the Master Chief Collection if that is what you have. The 1st Halo journey was an epic one and one certainly worth experiencing again. Suit up and work together with friends or just Cortana to defeat the Covenant and the Flood.

4,640 Master Chiefs are out there. 233 donned the helmet for the 1st time and 25 are just getting started. 46,065 achievements have been unlocked worth 448,005 gamerscore for 1,152,934 TA score.

If you haven't yet had a chance to look over the announcement article for the annual mega-event - you can do so HERE.

For those that aren't familiar with the concept, the UHH is an event that pits you directly against other members on TrueAchievements. You are paired up with someone new each week and you are given a list of 20 achievements to unlock. The first to unlock their achievements or whomever unlocks more wins. This year the achievements are being pulled from Xbox One playable games only. This means anything that was released for the Xbox One as well as any title that has been made available through the Backwards Compatible program.

It starts with a 4 week group stage where you receive 1 point for each achievement you unlock and 5 points for each head to head win. That gives you a maximum of 100 points to earn (4*20 + 4*5). After those 4 rounds, the top 256 move into the knockout competition rounds with the remainder offered a Just for Fun event where you are still matched up and given lists to work through. That equates to 8 rounds of mayhem for those looking to be this year's champion and 8 rounds of lists for those that weren't so lucky.

In addition to this being an annual event, there is also a Community Challenge tied to it. That's right, add another color level to your badge for completing 10 of the 20 achievements given to you in any period. Here's where you can look at how you want to play this. If you want to go competitively, you are restricted to 20 game removals from your overall pool. If you are looking to stick with the just for fun side of things - or perhaps focus on list completions and the Community Challenge in a more relaxed format - feel free to remove more titles to make that list more manageable. I've removed 20 - mainly the big free to plays that I have no hope of getting through if chosen - though I have no hope of actually being competitive. Hopefully you are able to participate. If not (and we acknowledge that those with high completion percentages have it hard for this event) don't worry - there's one more planned to finish the year!

  • BONUS RECAP:

The bonus last period asked Teams to end the scoring period with their gamerscore earned being evenly divisible by 2018. Last minute scoring may have taken this one away from more than one team. When the dust settled, 14 teams were able to earn it.
*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

This period the bonus is back on the Solo side. Another technical one - they are tasked with Déjà Vu which asks much much more from these poor gamers. Previously they only had to pay attention to their gamerscore - now they have to ensure their gamerscore AND achievement won totals are the same as last period. This will make last minute adjustments nearly impossible. Best of luck!

Tumbleweeds abound.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:

This period we have Mikhail Krauser of Night's Pride here to sit down with.
1) What pushed you to 1st place?
Mikhail Krauser: Well we had done very well the first half of the week unibtentionally and when that realization kicked in we decided to just go for it.

2) Did you play anything memorable?
Mikhail Krauser: Other than finishing up Attack on Titan 2, I did play some Evolve and I'm rather enjoying it!

3) What game would you recommend that maybe went under the radar or wasn't appreciated at release? Your personal 'hidden gem' as it were.
Mikhail Krauser: Definitely NIER on the xbox 360. SO GOOD

4) If you could replace any in-game character with yourself, who would you replace and why?
Mikhail Krauser: Oh geez. Maybe Barry Burton in Resident Evil? I'm not much of the family man type but I kinda look like him? Not very flattering but I'll take it. XD

5) Is there any game you wish you could remove from your gamertag? If so, which game and why does it deserve to go?
Mikhail Krauser: Hail to the Chimp. 2 achievements that require they be done on your first run ever with too many random elements. Games just frustrating.

6) What brought you to TrueAchievements originally?
Mikhail Krauser: Individual achievement guides and account tracking!

7) Battle Royale is all the rage these days. What are your thoughts on how its being adopted?
Mikhail Krauser: Honestly I think it's a great setup, but a fad that will pass well before most of the AAA adaptations happen resulting in quick loss of playerbase.

8) Are you interested in the possible streaming console we've been hearing rumors about? Do you have internet speeds that can support it?
Mikhail Krauser: Not informed on it yet.

9) Do you think we'll ever see games produced that utilize all the power of the Xbox One X or will it just get glorified ports of other console games?
Mikhail Krauser: Its the same with every system. We will get one or two massive games, but their expensive to create and usually reserved for console launch exclusives. Red dead and Sekirei look impressive but time constraints as necessary on a product, also will be the death of true artistry. Hellblade was incredible and was crafted with freedom and love. AAA are deadline defendant and sacrifices are made.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Mikhail Krauser: Best of luck everyone! :)

PermalinkGTASC 2018 - Period 30
Howdy!

Its that time again to take a look at how the community is performing in the GTASC as well as peek at what's happening in the world of gaming.

We're in-between major releases waiting on the few games that are releasing for the holidays this year. Pushing things back to February was in style as we saw at E3 this year. At least there's a lot on the horizon... its just a shame its still so far out. However, there are still some bigger titles we get to see fairly soon. If you aren't full up on backlog or have simply been waiting for something different to wander by, here are a few upcoming releases you may want to peek at:

The newest addition to the Madden series is here and EA seems to have taken a BIG step back from their previous Ultimate Team achievements. The achievements overall appear to be relatively easy compared to previous lists so if football (the American variety of course!) is your thing, this year's Madden may be your game. Madden NFL 19 releases on August 10th.

Sharing that same release date of August 10th, We Happy Few is coming out of the Game Preview program as a finished product. Dealing with depression can be accomplished in many ways but this society takes a novel approach. To stay productive, you take a drug called 'Joy' and anyone who doesn't is a 'Downer'. Well, its fun to be a downer too as anyone sneaking into this game will be able to see.

Some bittersweet news, The Walking Dead: The Final Season (Chapter 1) is due to hit on the 14th. With a (thankfully) revamped engine, Clementine will grace us for just one more season. I was able to see some footage of what they had planned a few months back and at that point they were looking at giving the player more ways to deal with those zeds. Traditionally, Telltale games are quite linear in how gameplay and especially zombie fights played out. This new take seems to offer a variety of ways to handle fights from the usual head on encounter to use of traps or simple evasion. This season focuses more on the children of The Walking Dead. I for one don't want to let Clem go. She's been with us for so long now...

Have you ever wanted to run your own cemetery? Do you enjoy simulation management games? Graveyard Keeper is the crash course you should take before buying that old church. You can craft your way to a beautiful crypt while you sell body parts and fluids for profit on the 15th!

Xbox One: Death Squared
Xbox One: Forza Horizon 2
Xbox 360: Dead Space 3

Upcoming:
Xbox One: For Honor
Xbox 360: Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two

We needed him so we woke him. That's right, John 117 is front and center of this month's playlist game alongside a younger and less rampant Cortana. We didn't look at the stats last period since the playlist was only 1 day old at that point. One week in now, here's how well the battle against the Covenent has been going. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is the game of the month but feel free to play along using The Master Chief Collection as well.

2,431 Spartans joined the fight. 88 started it for the Playlist and 9 have completed the journey. 20,273 achievements have been unlocked worth 195,400 gamerscore for 492,850 TA score. You can thank The Master Chief Collection for that crazy ratio boost. I mean, 600 achievements - nearly 200,000 tracked gamers. Its a beast, just like Master Chief himself

  • BONUS RECAP:

Last period the Solo side was tasked with unlocking an achievement that contains one of 3 different terms - 'Badge', 'Bonus' or 'Mark'. As an eagle-eyed member noticed, every single ACA NeoGeo game contains an achievement with the word 'Mark' in it. To honor those that don't take this low road, (not that its not valid of course... but let's face it, its a cop-out laugh) I'm handing out a cosmetic bonus to those that use anything but one of those hundred+ titles. As its a bonus that needs to be scanned for, it will be awarded later once we've got that data handy.

This period the bonus is for the Team side and is pretty straightforward. End the period with the team's gamerscore earned being evenly divisible by 2018. Why? Its time to Party Like It's... this year! If you are planning on making an attempt at this, make sure you have a good idea where elimination will land. Nothing will screw over this bonus more than panic points!

A quiet place this period.

  • OVERACHIEVER INTERVIEW:

This period we have both members of Eat, Sleep, Complete, Repeat here to share a little about themselves. smrnov was also the Solo Overachiever last period.
1) What pushed you to 1st place last period?
RedmptionDenied: Mostly smrnov, doing 75% of the work while pushing toward his 2000 completions goal. Did my part but was still catching up on work and sleep from being off the previous week and having some very late nights at achievement fest.
smrnov: I was trying to get 2,000 completions done, so that included a few quick games to make it there.

2) Did you play anything memorable?
RedmptionDenied: Nothing special. Picked up Ruiner during the ultimate game sale for it to get added to game pass shortly after naturally. Decent enough game but gets repetitive very quickly and has way too much stuff flashing and popping up on screen constantly. Maybe just getting old but anyone with any kind of sensitivity towards that is going to be very turned off by it.
smrnov: Highlights from the week are probably "Yet Another Zombie Defense HD" as it was quite a bit of fun for half a day to play in co-op and was only $5. "Candle: The Power of the Flame" was a nice game and has an excellent TA walkthrough. The other would be "Telltale Games' Poker Night 2" as that was great fun to listen to the conversations.

3) If you could recommend everyone play one game, regardless of platform, what would it be? What makes it so special to you?
RedmptionDenied: Turtle's Quest Dragon Warrior 4. Probably spent more time with it than any other in my early youth. One of the best old school RPG's out there. Really enjoyed how they separated the characters out over several chapters so you got to play essentially multiple mini RPG's with their own story lines before you finally played with the hero in the end and slowly joined up with everyone you played with prior.
smrnov: It's tough to pick one, but I would pick BioShock. I think the environment, the story, the gameplay, everything made that a special game.

4) We're hearing about the possibility of a console that streams content from a cloud service. Does this sound like something you are likely to buy? What factors do you consider when purchasing new gaming hardware?
RedmptionDenied: Turtle's Quest Unlikely. Just don't trust it enough to play smoothly unless they can enable the same model as game pass but don't see that happening. I rarely buy anything day one and generally wait for a decent price drop. Still haven't even picked up an X1X yet.
smrnov: I would prefer a non-streaming console despite having solid Internet speeds. I guess I would buy it if it was the only option. I wouldn't say I really consider any factors, if Microsoft puts out a new Xbox then I would likely buy it.

5) Audio is as important a factor as graphics to many of us. Which non-music genre game offers the best soundtrack in your opinion? (Guitar Hero and Rock Band are cop outs laugh)
RedmptionDenied: Use to listen to the Final Fantasy 8 piano collection quite often.
smrnov: Burnout Revenge (Xbox 360), SSX Tricky (Xbox), Quake (PC - Trent Reznor)

6) What game do you think is most deserving of a sequel?
RedmptionDenied: Toro
smrnov: Alan Wake (and I'm not counting American Nightmare as a sequel)

7) Do you use an Elite controller? Do you plan on buying one?
RedmptionDenied: Nope and probably not. Heard way too many accounts of people having the exact same problems with all controllers and the analog sticks giving out within a year or so which is often the case with myself, especially due to a fair amount of Rocket League stick smashing. Maybe if they make an improved Elite 2 down the road.
smrnov: I have two, however both have issues so I'm using the Sea of Thieves controller currently.

8) Picking from all the genres on TA, which flavor of game is your favorite?
RedmptionDenied: I like metroidvanias quite a bit but play more platformers than most anything else generally. Approaching 200k in the genre. Definitely not as skilled as some of the others on the site such as Awoo who has far more impressive completions, but I still like to put in a solid effort on each one until I start to pull out all my hair trying to get through something like The Sun and Moon anyway.
smrnov: RPG even though I don't seem to play enough of them.

9) How is your 360 backlog coming along? Is it a priority or have you more or less moved to gaming on the Xbox One?
RedmptionDenied: Almost completely moved away from it once they stopped putting out games for it. Less than 400 gamerscore on it this year so far, just over 5k on it last year. Got my fill of what I wanted to play during it's prime.
smrnov: Pretty well, I've been knocking off 360 games fairly consistently this year trying to eventually make the switch to Xbox One games 100%. A new console will likely be out before then however.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
RedmptionDenied: Thanks as always for running the contest and TA for hosting it. Always enjoyed a good scoring contest to provide extra motivation for my primary hobby. Been doing them for 7 years straight and this will most likely be my last. Probably. 65% chance.

Thanks to my teammate for coming out of retirement and making this the least stressful contest I've done by just doing what he does every year.

And to double down on what the ptarts said in last weeks interview, everyone should try to make it out to achievement fest in Indiana at least one time. Even if it's just a quick Friday to Sunday turnaround it's still always a good time. Come for the Japanese/Chinese import games + every Neo Geo in sight and stay for the donuts. Oh, and the people are cool too. Cept for that Red guy. He's kind of a dick.
smrnov: Good luck to everyone still in the competition.
