Recently I was informed about a method to install a delisted title on a Windows Phone 8 device by NBA Kirkland
, who obtained the steps from someone else. This is of particular interest because some games, specifically Mass Effect: Infiltrator, were delisted and do not work for Windows 10 Mobile. It doesn't help that it's not possible to re-download for Windows 10 Mobile as well. Please note that this entire process is performed on a PC. The only portion of these steps that requires a phone is to ensure it's connected to your PC via USB.
1) Setup VisualStudio with the Windows Phone Tools.
You'll need a copy of Visual Studio with .net Framework and the Windows Phone Tools installed. Install Visual Studio 2015 Community. When prompted, select Custom instead of Typical for Installation, and ensure that Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.0/8.1
Tools is checked to install the Windows Phone Tools.Visual Studio 2015 Community
2) Register your device as a developer-unlocked device.
This is required to install applications that do not originate from the Microsoft Store:Register Device as a Developer-Unlocked Device
3) Find a valid XAP file for installation.
Thanks to NBA Kirkland, as an example, a valid XAP installation for Mass Effect: Infiltrator can be found here:http://windowsphonefun.com/mass-effect-infiltrator-xap/
The link to download looks like this:
Download XAP: Direct DOWNLOAD
Some XAPs are encrypted, most notably Windows Phone 8 releases and later. If you change the extension from .XAP to .ZIP, and cannot open the file, or if you attempt to install and receive a "central directory" error, it cannot be installed via this method.
4) Install the XAP file to your device.
Run the AppDeploy application from the Windows Phone SDK (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v8.1\Tools\AppDeploy\AppDeploy.exe)
Ensure that your phone is connected to your PC, and that "Device" is selected. Browse to the XAP location, and select Deploy. If you receive an error, such as "Could not find end of central directory", the file was not created as a proper archive and will not install.
Now, the interesting side effects of this. This means that other applications, such as Star Wars: Battle for Hoth, that do not run properly on Windows 10 Mobile could be re-installed on a Windows Phone 8 device. There's also the ability to install OLDER versions of applications, such as Asphalt 7: Heat, and working around updates that have broken achievements.
Of note: The following broke due to updates, and would require this method in order to restore the functionality:
Ease of Use
Tetris Blitz - v1.5.X, v1.7.X (for Replay glitch)
Angry Birds Stella - Anything lower than 18.104.22.168
Asphalt 7: Heat - v22.214.171.124
Despicable Me: Minion Rush - Anything lower than 4.X
Lara Croft: Relic Run - v1.5.70 to anything below 126.96.36.199 (curses removed in 188.8.131.52)
Panzer Geekz - v184.108.40.206
