Handsome isn't the word I'd choose"Handsome" isn't the word I'd choose
I was playing and enjoying Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Game of the Year Edition a while ago but Bean Dives and completion campaigns took over and the game went to the bottom of the pile again unfinished. Some awesome recent footage of the upcoming sequel made me want to get back into it, so I let Mass Effect 3 take a temporary backseat so I could finish the campaign, as well as the Lord of the Hunt and Bright Lord content and anything else worth grabbing.

My feelings on the game still stand. It's a fantastic sandbox with fluid and fun combat, and unique mechanics like the Nemesis system that makes boss encounters little mini emergent stories. As an open world game it gets just the right balance of things to do without it feeling overwhelming. The extra content is pretty cool, expanding on the story and providing a few twists on the core gameplay, though it is mostly more of the same. With the story, extra content, collectables and other stuff done, I've got all the achievements I plan to as the final few require just a little too much time and skill to get, so that's also another game clear from the backlog.

Despite me being good and not starting any new games, new DLC for both versions of Goat Simulator and Plague Inc: Evolved really kicked my completion percentage back recently, even lower than my recently recovered Dive target. This meant some catching up was needed. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Game of the Year Edition sure helped, but I needed an extra boost. Seeing as I'd done the other DLC recently, I bit the bullet and decided to knock out both versions of the new Goat Simulator DLC, "Waste of Space", especially as that's what did a chunk of damage.

Like the other DLCs before it, "Waste of Space" is an (appropriately named) little bit of silly frivolity, this time focusing on a sci-fi theme with movie, game and pop culture references galore. It's ok, I guess. Just more of the same glitchy stupidness, so it really depends on how you feel about the game in general as to how much you'll get out of it. The achievements are mostly straightforward but, as many people have been bemoaning, the space craft controls for a few of them are absolutely abysmal. It's not quite Flappy Goat levels of frustration but it sure isn't fun. I believe that's it for DLC for the game, so it's nice to have both versions finally done with.

Campaign Complete - No
As mentioned, this took a back seat this time for some Uruk killing, I'll be picking it up again now though.

Campaign Complete - No
The next game on the 360 to work through was yet another Marvel superhero title, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. I sure have been seeing a lot of Wolverine on the 360 lately. I've made a solid start and am currently halfway through Act II, which I believe means halfway through the story. I'm aiming for the completion so doing as much as I can along the way to make the second playthrough a quick speedrun making the alternate moral choices needed. This means that rather than a breeze through the campaign, it's a little bit of a slog going for all the optional side missions and collectables. Oh, so many collectables. There are over 2,000 little emblems scattered across the city and, although they're in plain sight, that's just a silly number to get. They're reminiscent of the orbs in the Crackdown series. Thankfully, they do at least provide stats boosts so aren't completely pointless. Plus, it's great fun web swinging around the skyscrapers as is often the case in Spidey titles.

I'll hold off forming final opinions until I've finished but so far so meh. It's an ok game and features many classic Marvel characters, but the world just seems so bland. It's just lots of very grey skyscrapers. The combat also becomes pretty repetitive once you've got the best combos figured out. The boss fights do provide some variety. Despite not having the open-world appeal, I much preferred Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

burnthelamb Nice post Chewie. Glad to see you made some progress on your backlog and (mostly) enjoyed yourself while doing so.

PALOFGAMES Interesting read, what's the achievement list like on Shadow of Mordor? Also as a non-lord of the rings fan could I still enjoy the game having not watched the films?

ChewieOnIce Thanks for dropping by guys

@burn - Yeh, it's a mixed bag. The good definitely outweighs the bad though. And even the bad can be fun...ish

@PAL - The list is mostly very doable and well balanced. You'll get most things during normal play and collectibles etc aren't too arduous. The ones for doing specific actions require a little planning but not much, and they're pretty fun to pull off. There are some technically missable ones (or tough to get later if you miss certain opportunities in the story), specifically in the DLC content, so make sure to check the list before hand. There are also 2 achievements that are a significant challenge and I'm not going to even try for them. If you're a skilled gamer you'll probably get them though. And yes, you can enjoy the game with minimal prior experience of the lore. It works well enough in its own right. Of course, it helps with some background knowing what Sauron, Gollum and the One Ring are, but it's not essential.

Fire Hawk D Another good read as always! Web of Shadows is fun, but I felt the third act really dragged. The enemies seemed really annoying and they get in the way of the fun web-slinging.

ChewieOnIce Agreed. I'm probably half way through Act 3 now. It's extra draggy with all the additional side missions and those pesky collectibles too.

PALOFGAMES @Chewie That's cool to hear, I don't mind tough achievement lists but missable stuff really detracts from gaming if it's collectable related specifically. Going to have to pick it up, your recommendation has persuaded me!
