PermalinkThe Joy of Starting a New Game
It's been quite a while since I've actually started a game that I really enjoyed.

For the longest time, I was merely grinding out achievements and playing the same games over and over until I finally upped my completion percentage over 99%... and then I started a handful of games from my backlog for a bean dive and immediately I was burned out. I just wasn't having fun playing video games anymore. So, I took a break for a while. Living out in BFE helped me kick my Live habit as well. And since then, once in a while, I would turn on the console and play for a bit, then manage to focus on something else for a while.

The thrill of hearing achievements pop was so great that I purchased a Windows Phone 8, thinking I'd be playing games on it all the time. The joke was on me. I barely played any games on it. Until recently, I finally replaced it and wouldn't you know, I randomly received a Microsoft email stating my games credit was about to expire, so it was finally time to spend it on something. Might as well get a game or two that I'd actually enjoy, right?

I've been a long-time fan of superhero games, the NCAA franchise, as well as the Gears of War and Halo franchises. Each one definitely had their moments, along with quite a few irritating achievements. Those were games I enjoyed playing. There's been some hidden gems here and there, but for the most part, I did not enjoy the rest.

Finally, today, I started up Halo: Spartan Assault on my old Windows Phone (when I tried upgrading it, I was actually told the phone had NO VALUE, so I kept it) and I actually **spoiler alert** had fun. After all this time, why hadn't I started up this game? I've got no clue. Maybe I was just really focused on wrapping up the previously started games. Or maybe I just didn't care anymore. Regardless, I'm glad I finally sat down and started the game... and then heard the joyous sound of an achievement popping.

Maybe I'm not so burned out anymore. Or maybe, I just needed to play a fun game once again. Either way, there's a decent chance I'll purchase the arcade sequel. Can anyone give me their thoughts on Halo: Spartan Strike? How do the controls and the gameplay compare to Spartan Assault? Is it worth it?

The Ju1ce Great post, Matt! I can certainly relate to feeling burned out with achievement-hunting and gaming in general. And you're completely right that taking a long break or starting a game you know you will like and will have fun playing are the best ways to get out of a lull.

I think that's actually the only (completable) version of Spartan Assault I haven't played. I've done the 360, One, and Windows 8 versions. There's also an iphone version, but I believe it has some unobtainable achievements. You'll have to let me know what you think of the Windows Phone version; I've heard it plays quite a bit differently than the console/PC games.

I started Spartan Strike on PC as well, but I'm not very far into the game. It seems to be more of the same, so if you enjoy SA I would imagine you'll like SS as well.

Hope you've been well, man.

cancermatt2 Hey Cam! Great to hear from ya. Thanks for all your help in the past and for your helpful comments.

The phone, itself, is old and as the controls dictate, you're supposed to have your two thumbs constantly pressing down on the screen (left one controls character's direction, right is the shooting). Even though I've had the screen replaced within the past 8 months, once in a while there's lag or I have to remove my thumbs because it's uncomfortable to continually press on (literally). I've got a feeling I'll hate the controls at some point, but for now, they're acceptable.

Didn't I read about some sort of adapter to attach an xbox 360 controller to a Windows Phone? If so, that would be great!

GRAND NOBLE I was feeling the same recently. I did the Game Pass 14-day free trial and completed 7 or 8 games in 2 weeks. Plus i Had already completed 3 or 4 other games that same month. I was trying to make the most of the GP but I got SUPER burnt out. Especially because the last game was D4 Dark Dreams Don't Die which was a grind. It was my biggest month ever, but I was mentally exhausted.
This month, instead of trying to complete another huge set of games, I spent almost 2 weeks doing Darksiders. That game would definitely already be a lot of hours, but I took it slow. And really enjoyed the game more because of it.

In other news, I also really like Halo Spartan Strike. I got it on sale for like 5 bucks. BUt I got it on Xbox not the phone. So the controls are not as intuitive as they probably are on the phone. But still a fun game. Simple yet still challenging. I pretty much like all Halo games. I love when they use Halo universe and dip into other game-genres.

cancermatt2 Thanks for the comments Grand Noble. I, too, am a big fan of the Halo Universe. I've enjoyed all the Halo games I've played except for Halo Wars. Not really a RTS fan, but I've had fun with Spartan Assault. I might just get Spartan Strike as well.

GRAND NOBLE yeah i play anything halo related so years ago on 360 i got Wars, and didn't really like it lol. I was a completionist back then. but now I am and that incomplete game bothers me lol. So I been playing it to complete it. it's better than I remember 10 years ago. but still not a big fan of RTS either. Halo Wars 2 is gonna be the first game I probably don't buy. I played the Beta it was pretty fun actually. But I just don't think I can do this again lol. I haven't tried S.Strike but I really like S.Assault and my understanding is they're pretty much the same gameplay.

cancermatt2 Thx. Yeah, I'm skipping Halo Wars 2, too.
