PermalinkUHH Wk 11 (JFF): A Welcome Pudding, A Side of Raven & The First 4 Days of Xmas
After a few fairly intense weeks (relatively, for me anyway), this week I pudding'd up for the first time. After putting some effort into the first couple of weeks, The North Stark had got 0 every subsequent matchup. I wasn't about to let things go entirely though, so I spent the first part of the week knocking out what I reasonably could before using the rest of the time to focus on another completion and the awesome new site challenge. Ultimately, I ended with 7-0 in the match, which you can check out here.

I didn't put a lot of time into anything on the list but, of what I played a bit more of, Tomb Raider: Anniversary brought back some nostalgia for the old school Tomb Raider games, not least because I already technically completed it as part of the Tomb Raider: Legend DLC. I love Plague Inc: Evolved so it was neat to dive into the Simian Flu Update, which is an awesome tie-in to the recent Planet of the Apes films. Apart from the original back on PS1, I haven't really put any time into any Metal Gear Solid games despite owning the remasters on 360. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes took me on both a nostalgia trip for the original whilst also wowing me with the amazing mechanics, graphics and AI. Makes me want Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, despite knowing I would never have the time to put into it.

The first four days of the amazing Twelve Days of Christmas challenge have also taken my attention and so far, I've been keeping up well. Thankfully, I was on the cusp of a completion for day one anyway (details below. Day two was just about picking out some easy Versus achievements from basic games. Thanks to starting the Simian Flu Update for Plague Inc: Evolved, it was easy to knock off some ridiculously high ratio achievements for day three. Day four was seemingly easy but for some reason Inside decided to stop unlocking achievements so I tried Action News Heroes and realised that wasn't working either. I assumed there was some sort of Live synching / done unlocking situation going on so left it for the night. Thankfully when I checked this morning, they had popped by themselves.

More adventure gaming takes up my time, this time in the form of The Raven, a game I actually bought on sale before it became GwG and dived a while ago but never got round to until UHH got me back into it. It's very old fashioned in a lot of ways, with a traditional Agatha Christie style theft-murder mystery. There are even pretty much copies of characters and scenarios, and an elderly author character who kills off her own fictional detective in the same way Christie did with Poirot. It's also got old-school point and click mechanics with objects in the scene and character discussions requiring interaction to solve puzzles.

What really lets it down is the requirement to move the main character around the scenes so he physically looks at things to interact with. It's clunky and finicky because he moves like a tank and if you get the angle wrong he won't look at something so you have to get him to circle around again to get the angle right. It's also made worse by the fact the direction of movement is relevant to the current camera angle, which frequently changes as you move up and down a location. This means that you'll be walking in one direction, then the camera will switch and the character will pivot on the spot and go back the way he came without you changing the direction on the stick, then the camera angle flips again and he does another pivot. Despite that niggle, the whole thing is very nice and cosy, the story and characters are well written, and the puzzles aren't too challenging or nonsensical. I've only done the first episode so should put time into the next two once UHH is finished.

The Raven base game brings yet another completion. I said this was the target to start new things but at this stage I think I'll hold that off for the beginning of the year.
