PermalinkBetter Completions Matter 2019 - September Streaking
Hello everyone, before we begin today's lesson, I hope everyone enjoyed their summer at the arcade. While it was fun, we do have to wish the arcade farewell very soon. Remember to spend your tokens before they're gone forever! (The store will be closing one week after I finish entering August's submissions, and I'll let everyone know through my friend feed when it comes time)

Now with that out of the way, it is time explain September's bonus game! Huge shoutout to Runner eGirl for giving me the idea!

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! There are quite a few rules for this game in order to limit any possible cheesing. I'm sure people will still find ways but I'm counting on you to keep it legit! Just make sure you read everything about the game here, and submit it correctly to gain great bonus points. Submit a streak that doesn't follow the rules, and it will be null and void!

Alright so this month is all about creating a streak of completed games that are somehow connected to the previous game. There are 3 ways to connect games this month!

- Word: This means that the two games share a word in their title. * The words "the" "a/an" and "ACA Neogeo" do not count for this connection. Obviously, system and region tags don't count either.

- Genre: Obviously means they share at least one genre.

- Dev/Pub: This one means that the game shares either the same developer or publisher. * Both dev and publisher count as the same connection.

Now there are some rules to make this more fair and less cheesable! READ THESE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!! (Seriously)

Rule 1: Minimum ratio is 1.2 just like the arcade. If a game is below 1.2, it can NOT be included in your streak!

Rule 2: Games in the same series must be broken apart by another game. In other words, you can NOT use Gnomes Garden and then immediately use Gnomes Garden 2! There must be a different game between them.

Rule 3: Streak order must be in completion order! You can NOT use a game that you completed on the 25th, and then go back to a game you completed on the 3rd! However, not every game you complete has to be used in the streak. If you complete a game that doesn't count, it will simply be ignored from your streak. You can choose which game starts your streak as well.

Rule 4: You are responsible for keeping track of your streak this month. There will be a slot on your page for your streak, but if I'm behind and can't keep it updated, its up to you to pay attention to your streak.

Rule 5: THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE!!! You can NOT use the same connection for two games in a row!! (see connections above). You must rotate between them, or go back and forth.

Now I'll give an example of a good streak!

1. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark - Connection: Start
2. Rise of the Tomb Raider - Connection: Word (Rise)
3. Final Fantasy VII - Connection: Dev/Pub (Square Enix)
4. Fallout 3 - Connection: Genre (Role Playing)
5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - Connection: Dev/Pub (Bethesda Game Studios)
6. Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition - Connection: Word (Edition)

For each game that you successfully streak you will gain 30 bonus points, as well as a 100 bonus points bonus for hitting 10 games! (This does stack as well, so if you get 20 games you'll get another 100 bonus points. Assuming someone can get that many while following the rules)

Hopefully this all comes through clear for everyone and it should be fun to have to think of ways to connect games that you usually wouldn't be able to.

Finally, the Random Game Selector challenge giveaway is back for the month of September. Just like back in April, everyone who completed their random game for the month, will be entered for a chance to win a $20 USD Xbox gift card. If you aren't from the US and you win, you'll be given the choice of keeping it for your US account if you have one, or you can just give it to a friend, or if you so choose, I can reroll the winner.

Thanks for reading, and make sure to follow all those rules starting September 1st at midnight EST.

SabenRothschild So, my motivation is clarity rather than cheese (honest!), but can I just check that any other small linking words are permitted? i.e. of, in, on etc
Posted by SabenRothschild on 27 Aug at 08:09
IronFistofSnuff Yes, those words count, only the words listed do not count.

SabenRothschild Awesome - cheers :)

Runner eGirl Man, I should have saved Gears of war 4 for September! Right now given how much gaming time I have, it looks that I won't be able to connect any games cry

Anyway, my random game (Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes) made me think, would "Gear" and "Gears" be considered as the same word? I know technically they are not, but they also kind of are. I'm not planning on using that, I was just wondering (and others might find the info useful in the future)

IronFistofSnuff That is something I considered allowing, but ultimately decided against due to other word modifiers possibly be manipulated like Dark and The Darkness. I figured it would be clearer if the words were required to be a perfect match. We'll see how it goes, if the idea is liked and we do it again next year, then I may open it up to a vote on if Plurals should be allowed.

Mike Marcelais How strict is 'series'? Are side stories or spin-offs considered the same series? (World of Final Fantasy Maxima and Final Fantasy VII "the same" or not?)
Posted by Mike Marcelais on 10 Sep at 08:30
IronFistofSnuff Yes, basically it's safe to go by TA for series, if it's in the TA series you must seperate it.
