GTASC 2020: The FinalePermalink
Hello and welcome to the final recap for this year. That's right the event has ended! We've got some winners to present to you! Hopefully you were able to watch some of the excitement last period. The battle for the Solo crown was quite heated with both Infamous and Inferno118 going to extreme lengths. Take a look at the scores below. Remember, this is just for 1 week!

Not to overlook the insane effort by those on the Team side, here's how that turned out:

  • THE QUESTIONS

This is the big one. The final interview of the year. I forgot to send out questions to the quarterfinalists, so I doubled up with the semifinalists. Each set of winners received the same questions. The finalists are also here (with the exception of one that will be edited in later) to answer the same questions as the other winners - and then stay tuned for an extra round with just the finalists as they think back on this run of GTASC.

1) Looking back at the contest this year, is there a game (or 2) that stands out as memorable? What was remarkable about it?
CheshireMulisha: The contest has been so intense over the last few months it all blends into one. I think I've played close to 200 games this contest, completing a lot of them.
Streets of Rogue was a fun roguelite where the character choice actually changed the way the game played.
Beholder was one of the few games that I wish I could have spent more time playing properly and I'm looking forward to playing the 2nd game.
Infamous: Octopath certainly comes to mind as the most memorable, mostly due to how fast I had to grind it out in order to get as much TAD out of it as possible, but also it's just such a pleasure to play this game, It seems to have a perfect mix of challenging combat, grinding and exploration, with gorgeous pixely graphics and a perfect soundtrack, Only thing I can't really comment on is the story (which admittedly is a huge part of any RPG) as I skipped most of it in order to get some faster TAD lmao, but i'm sure that was great too, there's in-game journals where you can read everything that happened so maybe i'll check those out before I finish it up..
inToX Shredz: Probably warhammer vermintide 2. It's a very challenging game and makes for a great co-op experience with friends. Other then that, i had a lot of fun playing neon abyss too.
JimbotUK: My favourite game I played this year was Superhot. I was a little late to the party with this one but a really fun and unique shooter. Clutching out the no deaths run felt really good as I was running out of time before finals week.
I really enjoyed Tricky Towers as well, a very fun action puzzle game with a lot of challenge.
PRTM CLUESCROL: None really. Touhou Luna Nights comes to mind as I thought that game was really fun, it just had really good combat and fun bosses, it felt satisfying progressing through areas.
Slayer Reigning: Played a lot of trash during the contest whether for the sake of points or bonuses. However Neon Abyss is actually pretty fun and I'm going to work more on that.
TheAaronLad: Scourgebringer and Touhou were pretty fun games, played more trash than good this contest. So many trash games...
Unky TimFU: My team had a few late night "Swimsanity" sessions over the winter holidays. This was probably the most fun and memorable part of the contest for me.

2) If you could visit any game world for one day, which would it be?
CheshireMulisha: I'm sure you've asked me this before, but I can't remember what I said! Right now I'll go with a game world that's set on a desert island with no way of communicating with the outside world but there is a cocktail bar... That sounds bliss right about now!
Infamous: No idea really, I never played Cyberpunk but that looked pretty cool, yep i'll take one train ticket to Cyberpunks world please.
inToX Shredz: Not so much a game world but Ilios from overwatch. Awesome looking in real life and in game.
JimbotUK: Let's go and chill out in Eastshade. Take a picnic and some tea, we can do some painting. :)
PRTM CLUESCROL: I can't really think of a game world that I'd like to be in as a lot of them are dangerous, at least the ones I play.
Slayer Reigning: Mass Effect! Getting to explore everything that universe has to offer. Tons of amazing environments, planets, races. Couldn't get enough.
TheAaronLad: Honestly that's a toss up between Albion from the Fable series just because I really enjoy that world or Tamriel from The Elder Scrolls, specifically Cyrodiil same reason but both are probably because of magic and stuff on top of it.
Unky TimFU: I think hiking through a bandit-less Skyrim for a day would be pretty awesome.

3) If you could acquire just one video game power, what would you want? What would you do with it?
CheshireMulisha: I would take Bruce Wayne's power of wealth and use it to hire a professional GTASC preloading team.
Infamous: Being able to Double Jump would be pretty godly, I'd be able to save cats stuck in trees and well, that's all the uses I can think of for that but i'd be a real hero!
inToX Shredz: Controlling time is a must. Could do literally anything.
JimbotUK: I want to be as talented as the Dutchman from Trackmania.
PRTM CLUESCROL: Eating tons of food without any weight gain or having a full stomach
Slayer Reigning: Look, we can all agree that the Jumper video game was trash. However, being able to teleport would be awesome. No more driving or travel. Be able to see the world easily and affordable.
TheAaronLad: Whatever Dante's power is, the styles and access to his entire weapons from all games. As for what I would do with the power, fuck demons up duh. Or Vergil's power, specifically the Yamato, being able to teleport, summon swords and cutting through time and space. Also Judgement Cut kicks ass.
Unky TimFU: Is "Fast Travel" a power?

4) How do you feel about stacking games (playing platform or regional variants for additional gamerscore)?
CheshireMulisha: If it's a game I've enjoyed then I like to stack games. It's that weird psychological hold that achievements have over us where a game stack is an excuse to replay a game.
During this contest I stacked Dishonored 2, Moving Out, Wreckfest, Streets of Rogue and River City Girls. All of which I enjoyed and they never really felt like a chore replaying them.
Some of the Yakuza stacks are also on my horizon over the next few weeks.
Infamous: Usually doesn't make much sense to me, there's so many games available nowadays why spend all that time playing the same game over and over? I'll stack the occasional game though, especially during GTASC where it can be beneficial to play the same game twice, Gonner 2, Neon Abyss and West of Dead are a few that I used this year. Also Minecraft..
inToX Shredz: Never really cared for it besides score in the comp, but now I've got a better gaming pc I feel more inclined to stack games I enjoyed.
JimbotUK: Oooo yeah hopefully there will be a sequel to Stacking!
I'm not a big fan of stacks. I will only play them if it's a game I love like Trials Fusion or the points are really good like Moving Out & Unruly Heroes.
PRTM CLUESCROL: I think it's pretty cool, if you like a game a lot enough it might be fun to earn all those achievements again on an additional stack, not excited to stack the ninja gaiden games again though!
Slayer Reigning: If I've got the time I usually double dip. Or triple dip depending. A few Telltale games had 360, XB1, and Win10. I mean why not, if you can complete it once, surely you would do it again?
TheAaronLad: If they're good games and I can do the stack or remaster I will, I own some regional stacks and remasters of games I've yet to touch sadly mainly because I enjoyed the initial or "base" game enough to want to do it again, I made a huge mistake with Gears 2 JP though.
Unky TimFU: I love it and I do it quite often.

5) Which game are you the proudest of completing?
CheshireMulisha: Can't remember what I said last time, but I'll go with Plague Inc: Evolved. I spent so much time on that game beating all of the challenges and it's a game that's had me researching emigrating to Greenland over these last 12 months.
Infamous: Hard to say, pretty much any of my highest ratio completions like REUS, Chariot, Onigiri ect. Always feels great to knock out a giant completion like those!
inToX Shredz: Warhammer vermintide 1 felt pretty good to complete, the second one will too once they fix it...
JimbotUK: This event Double Kick Heroes was a fun and challenging completion. Also finally finished off the Power Rangers game which felt good to get done with.
PRTM CLUESCROL: This is a really tough question, Lost Planet 2 and DoDonPachi Resurrection come to mind but I don't think I could pick between them, although I'll say that finishing dodonpachi definitely had more of a real life reaction from me than lost planet 2, that game was just like ok done uninstall.
Slayer Reigning: Most recently finishing the turd that is Gears Pop. Such a stain on the series to complete. I hope many can finish before server shutdown.
TheAaronLad: Devil May Cry 5 hands down. Can't wait to get a series X and complete the special edition of it.
Unky TimFU: I did "Arcade Islands: Volume One" the week it came out in a little over three days. The game has been out just over 2.5 years and it still only has 19 completions.

6) Narrowing it down further, is there a particular achievement you're proud of?
CheshireMulisha: All Day, 'Ery Day for 100% all Campaign levels on Screamride is my only 2000 pointer. I keep thinking about doing the 360 stack but I break out into a sweat thinking about some of the levels.
Infamous: I managed to unlock The Golden Run in Descenders on my first attempt and was pretty proud of myself after that one, It's also my 3rd highest scoring achievement now which is crazy. I was also pretty happy with myself when I finished the Ruiner speedrun for the Dressed to Kill achievement, A really fun challenge although the random crashes near the end of a run got pretty frustrating. If they fixed the crashes i'd gladly speedrun it again just to improve my time!
inToX Shredz: Again on vermintide for completing the game on cataclysm.
JimbotUK: Managed to complete Brick Breaker level 100 this GTASC, that was a crazy experience!
Brick BreakerSurvival Skill Level 5The Survival Skill Level 5 achievement in Brick Breaker worth 1543 pointsPass 100 levels in Survival mode
PRTM CLUESCROL: Can't decide again, but
Persona 4: ArenaC'est Magnifique! The C'est Magnifique! achievement in Persona 4: Arena worth 1587 pointsComplete Score Attack Mode with all characters.
and
DoDonPachi Resurrection (EU)Secret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in DoDonPachi Resurrection (EU) worth 729 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement
were the most satisfying to ever get and I'm extremely happy with myself. I have videos on my youtube channel of getting both achievements :D
Slayer Reigning: Always the original Seriously on Gears 1. 1st achievement that I truly enjoyed the entire journey and kept going after.
TheAaronLad:
Devil May Cry 5Worthy of LegendThe Worthy of Legend achievement in Devil May Cry 5 worth 2079 pointsClear all missions with S rank on all difficulties except Heaven or Hell.
Unky TimFU: Nah.

7) With the news that Windows Phone is alive again, do you have any games you're trying to finish off?
CheshireMulisha: I wish that thing would stay dead so I never had to turn it on again!
Infamous: Nope, can't say I have much interest at all in any type of phone games. Even with the Project xCloud thing it mostly seems unnecessary.
inToX Shredz: Nope. Don't think I've even played on it.
JimbotUK: Nope I mainly play Xbox One. I only hope other people are so I can make leaderboard progress haha.
PRTM CLUESCROL: The only windows phone games I'm interested in are the two sonic ones, but they're delisted, so no D:
Slayer Reigning: Yeah actually! Gonna have to dust it off and charge it. Hopefully runs well enough to finish off a handful of games I never got around to.
TheAaronLad: Probably Minecraft WP but it refuses to work so ah well. But other than that none.
Unky TimFU: I'd like to say yes but it's probably never gonna happen.

8) Is there a game you wish you never started or added to your gamertag? Why do you wish you could forget it?
CheshireMulisha: Probably about 80% of the stuff I've played this last few months.
Infamous: Ugh so many, pretty much every game I bean dived without any intention of going back and actually playing it, tons of low ratio games, tons of phone games, too many lego games.. burn them allllll..
inToX Shredz: Quite a lot but I think the first was Bad Company 2. Just didn't like it.
JimbotUK: More achievements are more achievements I will take them all. The console command exploits like Starbound, Pathologic etc make me feel uneasy though.
PRTM CLUESCROL: I regret starting Ninja Gaiden III as that game brought out rage and sadness in me I've never felt before, truly one of the worst gaming experiences I think anyone could ever feel.
Slayer Reigning: Nope. I regret nothing. Play it all, dive it all, drop those ratios!
TheAaronLad: None really but Ninja Gaiden 3 stands out as it's so so so so shit.
Unky TimFU: Another No. I still consider myself a completionist but I just don't think about my unfinished games as much as I once did. This is probably because I've started so many games for the GTASC that I know I'll never get back to and complete. This may sound like a complaint but it's more of a Thank You.

9) How do you feel about the shorter GTASC variant?
CheshireMulisha: I think its better although it ramped up hard over the last few months. So many tough competitors and teams!
Infamous: I'm not sure really, I mean it's completely brutal how fast the scoring ramps up but at the same time I like that it gets interesting much faster, It's also nice not having to wait a full year to bang out some preloads :)
inToX Shredz: I feel rough haha. It was fun but very full on.
JimbotUK: Really enjoyed it, felt like it didn't drag on compared to the previous years. Hoping that we see a similar format again as it felt about right. Keeping the endurance aspect but not making it too over the top. Also True Achievement Difference has to be the way to go now. Rewards playing harder games (Even if a lot of them are overinflated) and it's less pay to win with gamepass offering amazing value.
PRTM CLUESCROL: It's my first gtasc but I enjoyed it! Means I have the other half of the year to prepare. Sleeps gonna be great.
Slayer Reigning: Love it. 6 months feels like a perfect fit. Would like to see a marathon edition though.
TheAaronLad: I much prefer it as it's less of a time sink, 6 months is better than nearly a year by a mile. Despite this year being hectic it was enjoyable enough but the time off is gonna be far better.
Unky TimFU: I love the GTASC and I love that you're always trying to spice it up. But I think 5/7 is a number that shouldn't be used again for the team semi-final. Maybe 5/10 or 3/7 might make things a little less boring. And thanks to you planting and TrueAchievements for putting on such an amazing competition every year.

10) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
CheshireMulisha: Can you ask Aaron to let me out of his basement please? He's locked me in here for 6 months now and will only feed me potatoes after I've scored. PRTM and Slayer make me do weird stuff on webcams and don't even tip. I don't want to play anymore! Send help!
inToX Shredz: Finally got us that full house badge.
JimbotUK: Shoutouts to my teammates Infamous, Icefiretn & inToX Shredz. We threw together a last minute team and couldn't have asked for a better crew to play gtasc with.
Shoutouts to some of the people who helped with info, boosting & game carries in the final few weeks. nuttywray, True Veteran, InigoMontoya80, PRTM CLUESCROL, TheAaronLad, Danno Omen, Wakapeil, MADeyePadEYE. And of course, DANIELJJ14 for the constant banter to keep our spirits high.
Shoutout to the AH101 podcast & discord server. A great place to talk games & TA with an awesome community.
Thanks to Planting & the others who help run the events!
PRTM CLUESCROL: I'm eating pizza rn and it's rly good I have grand theft auto v JP installing right now and I'm also gay so uh yeah shoutout to the friends I've made in this gtasc like Jimbot and DanielJJ they're cool
Slayer Reigning: It's been great to enjoy finals from the sideline and take it off. Props to all the teams that made it this far and all those we lost along the way. Certainly my favorite year to compete with a great team.

It was fun meta gaming bonuses and badges. Shame to every team that failed to obtain every bonus! No excuse, we had 2 tough bonuses to get. Also shoutout to Bears Can't Drift for saving us period 20! laugh

Cheers Planting and team to another great year and thanks for all the time you put in.

Bury the Light!
TheAaronLad: I've slept more the last week than I have the past 3 months... next year better be calmer or else I'll be upsetti spaghetti
Unky TimFU: I really want to say thanks again to my teammates/friends in "Human Cheevopede 2" for an incredible year. I hope that I'll get to work with you all again sometime down the road.

Three Years (2018, 2019, 2020) of Unky TimFU in the GTASC (Quick Stats)
- Appeared in all six semifinals (Three Solo and Three Team)
- Appeared in all three solo finals
- Finished 10th in solo all three years
- Team finishes of 7th, 4th, and 6th

...and now for a word (or several) from our Champions. Icefiretn told me they'd send in their replies later. Life is catching up for them.

1) What motivated you to push for such a massive ending?
Infamous: Well naturally we planned to start off the year pretty casual and see how far we get, I generally just enjoy preloading so I started working hard on that from the start and every week we survived our run became a little less casual, by the end we all had a good amount of preloads and were ready to put up a decent fight against Quarantine Boyz which, honestly I don't think any of us actually expected to win, but we knocked out all of our preloads early and just kept grinding away to build up and maintain as much of a lead as possible. In the end it seemed to work out pretty nicely. As always and no matter what the outcome was I couldn't have asked for a better team!

I was also somehow still in solo by the final week too so decided to try for a record best day by popping all of my preloads on Tuesday (after sleeping most of Monday), I managed to get all but two of my preloads done in time then moved onto a little Minecraft for some extra score and here was the result from 24 hours (I know you all love the light theme) -
External image

After that I was completely burnt out, I put up a bit more score from Minecraft and Dunk Lords throughout the week then over the weekend as Inferno118 started to catch up I started trying to knock out as much of Octopath as I possibly could, after about 36 hours of straight up grinding I had been taken over on solo by about 6k but was able to setup over 10k in inflated Octopath achievements so I dropped those and had a last minute scramble to find any other points wherever I could!

Ultimately it was an insanely close finish, a couple of rogue preloads and it could have gone either way so mad props to Inferno118 for sticking it out like that, I wouldn't have been able to push nearly as hard as I did if it wasn't for him and that crazy 30k push he did over the weekend! And of course a big thanks to JimbotUK, Icefiretn and InToX Shredz for all the moral support and ideas on what to score ect during those last few days. toast]
inToX Shredz: Trying to keep up with Infamous... trying
JimbotUK: With Infamous trying his best for the solo win we knew a good team placing would be possible if the rest of us could pull our weight as well.

2) Can you share any pointers for how you selected which games to play during the event?
Infamous: I always try to get the majority of my weekly score while preloading end game achievements for later in the contest, games like Dandara, Void Bastards, Unruly Heroes, REUS and Ruiner all come to mind as good examples of this with plenty of preload and scoring potential, if those weren't enough and I needed more score from somewhere else i'd generally look towards some higher skill or luck based achievements, things like Race the Sun or Descenders as some extreme examples, just things that couldn't be easily used in the Semis/Final week. If all that fails then there's always tons of random easy scoring games from Game Pass to fall back to and if those all fail too then it's time to pop some preloads! I'm also a big fan of trying to boost up my ratio stat as much as possible so that also plays a big part in which games I play.
inToX Shredz: I haven't really gone for preloads before so all the big ones were easy for me to choose. Like giana.
JimbotUK: Mostly checking the Team stats page with the top 20 games each week. It soon becomes obvious the most efficient games to try and save as long as possible.

3) Preloading is a mystery to many on site still. Can you please explain in your words what preloading is? How do you keep track of all that progress?
Infamous: Just going to copy my answer from last year for this one, but here is a link to my spreadsheet from this year - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hxKelgC8fyL9dCxrOuYW...

Preloading is basically meeting as much of an achievements requirements without actually popping it. If a game has 100 levels and most of the TA score comes from beating all 100 levels, you play 99/100 levels and save the last level for when you need that achievement, If you can it's usually even better to save the first level in a game too as they're generally much easier to finish. You can preload almost any game like this it usually just comes down to whether it's worth the time investment or not. As for notes just make sure you write down enough for you to remember exactly what you need to do and any tips you might have for yourself against any complex mechanics, if you're preloading a lot of games it's understandable that you might forget a few things!
inToX Shredz: I guess just playing a game till a certain point and waiting for six months for the finals. I was using a book but my team introduced me to the magic of spreadsheets.
JimbotUK: Preloading is preparing achievements so that they are close to unlocking. You then save them until you most need the score. This is the core metagame of gtasc if you want to be competitive. We have a google sheets page to track our preloads and other info like bonuses and efficient games.

4) Looking back on the entire year, is there anything you played for points that you found yourself enjoying? What about that game caught your interest?
Infamous: Octopath Traveller, Gears Tactics Insane No Death run, Descenders, Wargroove, REUS, Giana Speedruns, Unruly Heroes Speedruns, Ruiner Speedruns, Monster Sanctuary and Spellbreak all stand out to me as some of the more enjoyable games I played this contest, I started to write a paragraph for each one but it got crazy long so think i'll leave it there lol.
inToX Shredz: I didn't mind I am bread. Was just a fun challenging game.
JimbotUK: I enjoyed Eastshade, a cool world and very relaxing to play. Unruly Heroes is a great platformer if you enjoy Rayman style games.

5) What is your ideal team size?
Infamous: I guess 5-man teams smile
inToX Shredz: As many as we can get, 5, 6, 8, 10...
JimbotUK: You might have seen me mention something about teams of 5 haha. Had a lot of fun the 2017 year in my first gtasc and would love to see a throwback to that.

6) What advice would you give someone looking to start GTASC for the first time?
Infamous: Just gonna copy this answer from last year too, only difference with the shorter format GTASC is you really do need to make sure you have a couple decent preloads as those cutoffs can be wildly unpredictable!
Just take it slow and have fun with it, preload a few games for the weeks you might not be able to make cutoff and yeah, just see how far you can get. If you're playing on the team side make sure to find some like-minded teammates too, would suck to join a team and all have different goals for the contest.
inToX Shredz: If they're going for the win, make sure to preload. If they are going for casual, don't be like us.
JimbotUK: Just enjoy the extra motivation and unique way of hunting achievements. As soon as it starts to become not fun don't force yourself through it. Finding teammates with similar mentalities and goals is really key.

7) Any regrets? Anything you'd do differently given a do-over?
Infamous: Nope! Never any regrets :)
inToX Shredz: Nah, might not be here otherwise.
JimbotUK: Not really, was a super fun event. This was my most stress free gtasc as I chose to only play team side. Solo is definitely the harder event!

8) What would you say your biggest surprise was this year?
Infamous: Probably Pathologic 2 taking a shit and dropping from a 7+ ratio game to a 1.3 ratio game, was one of my favourite games from last year (despite the 1 star rating I gave it for poor performance), and now it's just gamerscore fodder for people who.. really like gamerscore..
inToX Shredz: That there wasn't really much competition in team finals haha.
JimbotUK: Taking the win in finals!!

9) Do the bonuses and weekly badges give enough incentive to work for them or would you like to see a change to them? If you think things need tweaks, what would yo do?
Infamous: I think it's fine as is really, but I wouldn't be opposed to having harder bonuses being worth more points, for example this year the double TAD bonus made no sense for anyone to go for, (although one silly team did! xD) maybe if it was worth like 2.5k points at least it might have been enough to sway some more teams into trying for it, I think all of the "double X from previous period" bonuses could use this treatment but based on what the average was from the last period, just so that if the bonuses come up early and are super easy then it's not just a massive chunk of bonus points for no effort. Same could be done for a few of the other harder ones too.
inToX Shredz: I think the 1000 points work better than 2000, but I feel like full house and the one for all the bonuses should be for like 3000.
JimbotUK: I think the bonuses were done well this year, you definitely needed to pick them up to keep up with cutoffs but they didn't undermine the efforts of scoring. They definitely played a lesser role this year but I personally enjoyed that as I prefer to work on preloads rather than go for the badges and hard bonuses.

10) Do you prefer the last minute points strategy or an early lead?
Infamous: I think a healthy mix of both is key in a contest like this, when scoring accelerates so fast on those Monday mornings you want to be as close to the top as possible while also keeping some last minute points as a back up in case things start to get hairy. Same goes for the final week too, probably best to get that early lead and then hold onto it with as big of a lead as possible!
inToX Shredz: Was thinking last minute, but early lead shows results.
JimbotUK: At dawn of day 2 GTASC Finals 'Is This Team' will forever rain fire from the skies.
It may seem counterintuitive laying everything down in the open at the start of the week but it has worked for us 3/3 times! #MentallyDefeated

Be aware that each of the event winners was also asked to help design a bonus for the next run. One offered a very interesting twist that we've yet to see. I can't wait to let you enjoy it laugh

Spirochaete I don't agree that Jumper was a bad game.

[proof that I read the interviews]

Good read.
