Halo: Reach Details Begin to Surface

The next Game Informer (should be arriving in your mailbox soon) has a 10-page article on the latest installment of the Halo-verse.

Halo: Reach will center on Noble Team’s missions to defend Reach. Consisting of five state-of-the-art (for the game’s time period) Spartan IIIs and an out-dated Spartan II poor Jorge, Noble Team is the only force standing between Reach and a Covenant take over.

To those that have read the Halo books, the roster for this game will sound familiar.

Carter-259 is the leader of the squad with support from Kat-320, Jorge-052 (our resident Spartan II), Emile-239, and Jun-266. The squad will encounter not only the Covenant, but also the various cultures calling Reach home. This includes any human rebel scum.

According to Game Informer, Reach’s game mechanics includes many throwbacks to the days of Halo: Combat Evolved. The health bar will take damage and not replenish over time, but your shield will regenerate health. The original sniper rifle, assault rifles, magnum, plasma pistol, sword, and needler are all back to their original glory. Frag and plasma grenades are your only option for thrown projectiles.

This game will not be entire step back in combat technology, you will also see (and experience) the new marksman rifle and needle rifle. Melee assassinations will be a new technique for context-sensitive takedowns. Finally, the Spartan armor is customizable within this game to allow for increased sprinting or camouflage abilities – as few examples thrown out there.

For multiplayer, Halo: Reach will feature all the same assets of Halo 3’s multiplayer. This includes the much loved four-player online co-op, split screen local co-op, and sixteen player online matches. Forge should make a reappearance, but there is no word on the Halo 3 metagame being reused for Reach. Bungie has been mum on what new flavors will be added to Halo: Reach, I’m hoping we get to see Firefight included.
