Rovio and Lucasfilm today announced that they have joined forces to produce a new take on the popular Angry Birds franchise using the Star Wars license. This new game, creatively entitled Angry Birds Star Wars, will be winging its way to Windows Phone and Windows 8 soon.
The game will reimagine the iconic characters and locations of the Star Wars saga with distinctly more avian and porcine features. Exactly how the classic Angry Birds gameplay will be adapted to work with the Star Wars elements remains to be seen.
A teaser trailer has been released showing a be-feathered Jedi with a unique lightsaber, but no gameplay:
CMO of Rovio, fan of obvious puns and apparant relative of Chewbacca, Peter Vesterbacka, had the following to say about the meeting of franchises:
This is the best Angry Birds game we’ve ever done. It’s the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay set in in a galaxy far, far away. As a big Star Wars fan myself, I’m really excited about this new universe. The Force is definitely strong with this one.Colum Slevin, Head of Studio Operations for Lucasfilm, also chimed in with the following:
Both Star Wars and Angry Birds share the instant and irresistible appeal of hands-on fun. People seem to instinctively know what to do when handed a lightsaber or a bird in a slingshot, so this is a natural combination. You know, he has a point there: I always know exactly what to do when someone hands me a lightsaber or a bird in a slingshot. However, where I falter is when someone hands me a lightsaber and a bird in a slingshot. What do I do?!
Angry Birds Star Wars has been given a release date of November 8th. However, we don't know yet whether this is a cross platform release date (iOS, Android, Mac, PC, Windows Phone and Windows 8) or whether the Windows based releases will be later.
