SEGA Unleashes The Model 2 Collection

By Dog of Thunder, 6 years ago
Back in the '90's, arcades were much more common and, in fact, had entered a second "golden era" thanks to the rise of Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and the amazing SEGA arcade games of the era. Games such as Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing were mind-blowing back when they first debuted as the flagbearers of SEGA's new arcade hardware, dubbed the SEGA Model 1.

Today, SEGA has released a trailer highlight the second generation of arcade titles, all of which used the SEGA Model 2 hardware and all of which, were massive hits. Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Sonic the Fighters, Virtua Striker and Cyber-Troopers: Virtual On will all be released over the upcoming months. Enjoy this trailer highlighting the arcade hits from nearly 20 years ago (HA! Who else feels really old!?):

All of the recent re-releases from SEGA, which have included NiGHTS into dreams... and Sonic Adventure 2 are part of an overarching strategy we first talked about on TrueAchievements back in May. The strategy of splitting SEGA into divsions focused solely on console games and downloadable games is paying dividends as the extensive backlog is getting re-released a generation at a time.

Note that Cyber-Troopers: Virtual On is actually the first game in the series. The already released is the second game.

We currently have no release dates for any of these games nor do we have an official price point. Unofficially, each of these games will be available for 800 MSP and while that is unlikely to change, there is a possibility that it might be adjusted as we get close to release.
