TA Gaming Stats - October 22nd to 28th 2012

By Chewie, 6 years ago
This report is for the period October 22nd to October 28th 2012.

As October draws to a close and November covers everything with its dismal shroud, we've seen the days start to get a lot shorter and the weather turn a lot more unfriendly.

I'm currently sitting wrapped up in a few layers of finest Ewok-fur blankets, sipping on cocoa, with only the numbers provided by my Ewok-helpers, the Statisticles, to cheer my spirits as the dreary days and long winter nights take hold. And yes, the Statisticles are disconcerted by my Ewok-fur blankets, but I've assured them that they are all sustainably sourced. They'll believe anything, those gullible tykes.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to wish all you TA'ers affected by storm Sandy well as it sweeps across the States. I hope these Stats provide some small comfort during this turbulent time. Although, I'm sure not quite as much as power would, or food, or water.

Games Started
21,931 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 33,203 games between them (1,660 different games).

TA'ers the world over have taken to leaving skid-marks everywhere as Forza Horizon takes pole position in its debut week, with over 3,000 starters, whereas the other big name release of the week, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, fights its way into second with over 1,000 less starters.

The other big releases of the last few weeks, namely Dishonored, Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360), Resident Evil 6 (Xbox 360), XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Doom 3: BFG Edition and FIFA 13, maintain decent tail numbers, with very similar figures to last week. Borderlands 2 even increases its starters by almost 50.

Thanks to a welcome Shocktober discount, Resident Evil 6 shares the chart with its older half-brother, Resident Evil 4 HD (Xbox 360), which lands at eighth with over 300 starters.

New release Skylanders Giants also sneaks into the tenth spot. Now be honest guys, how many of these 217 starters are because 'the kids are playing it on my account' and how many of you got the toy tie-in for yourselves.

Last week saw Happy Wars (Xbox 360) growing its weekly starters from around 3,000 to over 4,000. This week it over halves the number of starters to just under 2,000, showing that, even though the free-to-play title is still ridiculously popular, now that everyone and their dog has picked it up, it has started to slow its domination. I think it'll stay at the top spot for a few more weeks, barring any surprisingly popular new releases.

Despite little marketing and news build-up or fanfare on release, new release, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, lands in at second thanks to the series' strong fan base.

Doom (Arcade) and Doom II: Hell on Earth continue to make their presence felt, thanks to being bundled as part of Doom 3: BFG Edition. Last week, the second instalment proved more popular than the original FPS. This week however sees Doom take the lead over its sequel, with them landing in third and fifth respectively.

The aforementioned Shocktober sale gives Ugly Americans: Apocalypsegeddon and Alan Wake's American Nightmare the last two spots. With so many horror games on the marketplace, I was a little disappointed that there weren't more discounted titles in the Halloween sale. I guess there's always the Countdown to 2013 sales to look forward to...

New release, Carcassonne (WP), leads the pack significantly this week, with over 252 starters more than the next game in the chart, the DotW title, Zombies!!! (WP). The discounted Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (WP) sits at third, whilst the previous week's new release, Cracking Sands (WP), disappears without a trace.

After proving their popularity after only a couple of days of release last week, despite being Nokia exclusives, RISK (WP) and Connect 4 (WP) grow their starters and settle into fourth and fifth places.

I wonder, are old-school tabletop games, such as Carcassonne, RISK and Connect 4, so popular to play on Windows Phones because of nostalgia, because the games themselves are so timeless, or simply because the choice on the marketplace is otherwise not that great?

Games Completed
6,560 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 9,233 games between them (1,174 different games).

More and more people continue to wrap up Borderlands 2, with the open-world, gun-heavy, RPG continuing to hit over 500 completions this week, which is down on the over 700 from last week, but still many more than the other games on the chart.

At second and third, Dishonored and Resident Evil 6 grow their completions slightly over last week, with both continuing to remain at over 200 each.

Perhaps surprisingly, Forza Horizon takes the fourth spot in its first week of release. It doesn't seem that easy of a completion, with only just over 5% of people having completed it at this moment. I'll put its early appearance here down to the uber-fan petrol-heads who cleared their schedule and powered their way through it very quickly.

The rest of the chart shows the familiar sight of games which have sequels out very soon (or already) as people attempt to wrap them up before embarking on their follow-ups. I am of course talking about Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Borderlands, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Top Retail Games Completed

The Walking Dead drops its completions by over a third this week, to just over 600. With these numbers after this episode has been on the chart for only two weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if a game overtakes it quite soon, unlike the previous episodes.

As was pointed out to me last week, the currently glitched achievement, Leader of the Pack, is suddenly making completion of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition a lot easier, keeping it high on the charts in second place. Heck, even I started the game up and *POP*. However, it also means that the ratio for that particular achievement, and the whole game in fact, have dropped off a little. The special Halloween skins pack, with proceeds going to charity, is also probably luring people back in to finish the game.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Unlike many other Windows Phone titles, Carcassonne is proving quite a difficult completion. In fact, to date, no one has actually completed it. This might be because of two particularly grindy achievements: Duke of Carcassonne, which requires 200 games to be completed, and Emperor of Carcassonne, which requires a points total of over 15,000 over all games. It's not exactly, Collapse! (WP).

Despite not appearing last week, Civilisation Revolution takes the top spot this week with over 40 completions. The rest of the table is very similar to last week, except for RISK's sixth place debut position.

Achievements Won
51,084 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 618,875 achievements online between them (44,575 different achievements).

Perhaps surprisingly, considering Medal of Honor: Warfighter's release, Forza Horizon gives us a clean sweep on Retail Achievements won. This is probably in no small part thanks to a large chunk of the achievements for the game being relatively easy to pick up. For instance, the achievement at the bottom of this table, Barn This Way, has been picked up by a hefty 64% of players.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Now that all the crafters of mines have picked up the aforementioned, glitched, "Leader of the Pack", Happy Wars gets the clean sweep that it probably would have got last week and may even get again while it retains its free-to-play popularity.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

We get 3 for 3 in clean sweeps this week, with Carcassonne nabbing all the achievements for Windows Phone. Despite those few aforementioned peskily grindy achievements, it would seem that the majority of them are fairly easy to nab.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

The release of Medal of Honor and the slow, steady decline of Borderlands 2 pushes Shooter back above Role-Playing for the first time in a few weeks, but Action-Adventure still leads the pack.

Racing also gets a boost thanks to Forza Horizon, jumping from sixth to fourth, almost quadrupling the number of TrueAchievements won for the genre, and knocking down Action and Sports into fifth and sixth.

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre
  • Action-Adventure4,572,881
  • Shooter3,814,817
  • Role-Playing2,599,413
  • Racing2,593,434
  • Action1,755,920
  • Sports1,371,335
  • Strategy541,683
  • Music & Rhythm370,496
  • Adventure361,544
  • Platformer336,178

Well, that's all for this week's Stats.

Next week, expect a certain Assassin to show everything else just how it's done, as well as some classic wrestlers with Attitude and a few returning titles, thanks to some recent DLC releases.
