BioShock Infinite Officially Nixes Multiplayer

Back in 2007, Irrational Games' BioShock (Xbox 360) represented one of the high points in single-player gaming. As a first-person shooter without multiplayer, it was a beautiful unicorn that you couldn't ride with friends.

This was/is both good and bad.

It was good because it allowed Irrational to focus on creating an incredibly immersive, deep, and fulfilling experience that extended beyond the traditional "shoot all things that move" dynamic of most shooters.

It was bad because... well... you couldn't blast your buddy in the head and dip your crotch in his face in digital celebration.

While 2K Marin's BioShock 2 (Xbox 360) added in multiplayer, the game failed to live up to the original and the multiplayer (while competent) was not universally loved.

Throughout its development, the question of multiplayer for the next installment, BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360), and the "will they" or "won't they" has almost reached Sam and Diane proportions. When Irrational brought on Gears of War veteran Rod Fergusson back in August, many gamers speculated that multiplayer for Infinite was most-certainly on. Unfortunately for fans of MP, this past weekend, Ken Levine, Creative Director of Irrational Games, confirmed that the game would not have any multiplayer and would be a single-player-only experience.

And thus the circle is complete.

BioShock Infinite is set for a February 26th, 2013 release.
