That's right folks, you heard correctly. While Epic quashed previous rumours of the game being in development and of a Christmas 2010 release, the rumour has yet to bleed out. With a quick 'roadie run' and a snappy press of the 'X' button the rumour has been revived. Edge Online.com has reported that "a trusted US publishing source" has told them of a penciled-in release date for April 2011.
While not officially announced as of yet, Epic games is in pre-production of Gear of War 3, a story that will see the continuation of the COG plight to rid the world of the Locust Horde, and is said to be releasing a teaser as early as next month.
While everybody listened on with hopes of a GoW 3 reveal during Epic's most recent press conference at the GDC, which focused mainly on new features and partner updates for their Unreal Engine 3 like the ominous sounding "vertex deformation", President Mark Rein did drop the teensiest of hints about GoW 3 saying "When you see what we’re actually working on, it will blow your mind."
Well, damn, I hope so. Epic's track record with the GoW franchise has been nothing less than stellar. Both Gears of War and Gears of War 2 offered ground breaking game play and I'm giddy with anticipation for the third installment.
I imagine the only reason we're not seeing an earlier release date is that Microsoft wants Project Natal and Halo: Reach to dominate the 2010 holiday season.
That's ok though, I still need some time to work on Seriously 2.0.
