TA Gaming Stats - December 24th to 30th 2012

By Chewie, 3 years ago
This report is for the period December 24th to December 30th 2012.

Happy New Year and welcome to the first weekly stats report of 2013, bringing you the final numbers from the last week of 2012.

I hope you got everything you wanted over the festive period. I can safely say that the majority of games showing up here are either thanks to people getting some of the more recent big titles of the year for Christmas, or people grabbing things in the various sales.

As well as my various 'work through the backlog' and 'stop buying games just because they're on sale' goals, I made some New Year resolutions; one of which was to promise to be kinder to my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles this week. To that end, I've now added an extra window into their hovel office. Well, I say window, I mean that I kicked a whole in the wall when I found out that they'd got me Ice Age: Continental Drift - Arctic Games for a gift. Urg.

Games Started
39,920 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 70,689 games between them (1,767 different games).

Retail Games Started this week gives us the same ten games as the last few weeks, but all with inflated numbers, as most double or even triple their number of starters. I wonder what games people found in their stockings a couple of weeks ago...

Far Cry 3 sits at the top for the fifth week running. This game has become a certifiable hit thanks to glowing reviews and word of mouth. I know a fair few people here on TA have been loving playing around on the Rook islands. The number of starters more than doubles the ones from the last few weeks, hitting over 3,500.

Halo 4 has finally reduced the gap that Call of Duty: Black Ops II had over it since its release, overtaking it and landing in second. Both games remain very close though, with a difference of only 190 starters between them.

It's the battle of the assassins in fourth, fifth and sixth place. Hitman: Absolution slips below Assassin's Creed III, allowing Connor to grab fourth, with 47 in fifth and Corvo in sixth. All three games manage to pull in over 1,000 starters for the end of year.

Pulling up the rear, we get the two most popular racers of the year, Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) and Forza Horizon in ninth and tenth, both very close with just under 900 starters.

Now I knew that many of the Arcade Games Started this week would come from the sales, especially the Countdown to 2013 sale throughout the week, but thanks to a very notable discount for a very popular title, one name dominates far and above all others.

The Walking Dead (Xbox 360) has been a perennial instalment on these stats. This is down to each episode being at a lower price point than full arcade titles, easy completions of each episode, zombies and, well, the game just being really great. This week, it smashes the numbers thanks to the first episode being made free during some of the Countdown to 2013 sales and the rest of the episodes being made half price on one of the days. How smashed are those numbers you ask? Well, more than three times the number of people started the game this week than during the game's first couple of weeks of release. Also, these over 7,000 starters now account for almost a fifth of the total amount of people who have started the game. And this doesn't even take into account the number of people who downloaded it but hadn't started it yet (me included), so expect it to pull in good numbers for a while yet.

The majority of other titles on the list also come from the sales, including Kinect Party, Trials Evolution, Deadlight, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Rock of Ages and Crazy Taxi.

The free-to-play titles Happy Wars (Xbox 360) and Karaoke also stick around in sixth and seventh to remind everyone that free is popular too, whereas Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition doesn't need a drop in price to continue chugging along with new starters in eighth.

Top Arcade Games Started

Following a hefty discount, the popular Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (WP) lands a number one spot, gobbling up the competition and almost 300 starters.

The Countdown to 2013 sales also give us plenty of starters for Windows Phone, including Kinectimals (WP), Contre Jour (WP), iStunt 2 (WP), Mush (WP), geoDefense Swarm (WP) and Doodle Jump (WP).

Games Completed
8,232 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 12,208 games between them (1,170 different games).

Being so popular for the last few weeks, it's little wonder, that many are taking the time to work through and wrap up Far Cry 3. It carries on its place at the top of the table, closely followed by Halo 4.

Most of the rest of the table is made of the same titles for the last few weeks, a mix of DLC bumping (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Battlefield 3), fairly easy completions (LEGO The Lord of the Rings and Forza Horizon) and recently popular titles (Hitman: Absolution, Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360) and Assassin's Creed III).

Mass Effect 3 sneaks back onto the table at the bottom, probably thanks to the recent N7 weekend.

Unsurprisingly the massive bump in starters for The Walking Dead also gives it a big bump up on Arcade Games Completed. Already in first place for the last few weeks, it over doubles the number of completions, pushing it over the 1,000 mark. Bear in mind that this includes anyone who has completed any individual episode before starting the next one. This means that a hefty amount of these will be just for the first episode.

The easiest games from the recent sales make up the majority of the rest of the table as people tried to bump up their completion numbers before the year ended with easy completions like Deadlight and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Like Arcade, Windows Phone Completed is made up mostly of the easiest of the sales titles, with Pac-Man in particular proving a breeze with almost 250 completions, over three times more than the next game in the list. It currently sits at over 60% of players having finished it. With the big discount and easy completion, expect to see it on these tables for a few weeks to come.

Achievements Won
62,037 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 983,466 achievements online between them (46,164 different achievements).

The popularity of Far Cry 3 and a bunch of relatively easy achievements lands it a clean sweep this week on Retails Achievements Won, outstripping the popular Halo 4 achievements of the last few weeks. These achievements reflect a broad mix of different early game activities, including story missions, engaging different types of side quest and a few random ones related to getting tattoos and crafting weapons.

Top Retail Achievements Won

It isn't really any surprise that The Walking Dead grabs a clean sweep on Arcade Achievements Won. The top eight achievements are all the ones for the first episode, with the last two being from the second episode, proving that people were more than willing to pick up more than just the freebie episode in the sales. These achievement counts go well into the thousands (almost 7,000 at the top!); much more than your average week, which would do well to have the top achievement hit 1,000.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

With those big starting numbers and that super easy completion, the third achievement clean sweep this week goes to Pac-Man.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Despite Shooter actually getting a small boost in numbers since last week, Action-Adventure closes the gap between the two genres this week, no doubt because of the bump received from the increased amout of players with games such as Assassin's Creed 3 and Hitman in their stockings. Less than 500,000 separate the two now. Will next week see Shooter drop down into second place?

That's all for now folks. See you next week with the round up for the whole month of December, and the week after for something a little special....stats for the whole of 2012!! Hey, maybe that 'window' did the trick after all.
