TrueAchievement's 2012 Strategy Game of the Year, XCOM: Enemy Unknown
, is already shaping up to be a drastically different game now than it was when it first launched back in October. After a patch
and the "Slingshot" DLC pack
, Firaxis is going for the trifecta of updates by doing just that, releasing an update.
The "Second Wave" update for XCOM: Enemy Unknown
brings with it drastic changes to the basic game, or no changes at all. The choice is yours to make through a new gameplay menu that offers 12 adjustments to the single-player game available to those that have already completed the game once on any difficulty. Be warned that not all of these will work if you are continuing a game, so if you want to fully take advantage of these options, it would be best to start a new game. Of course, with 5 playthroughs required to get all of the achievements, it's likely that you'd be doing that anyways. Here's the list of the new options available with the "Second Wave" update:Damage Roulette:
Weapons have a wider range of damage.New Economy:
Randomized council member funding. Not Created Equally:
Rookies will have random starting stats.Hidden Potential:
As a soldier is promoted, stats increase randomly. Red Fog:
Combat wounds will degrade the soldier's mission stats.Absolutely Critical:
A flanking shot guarantees a critical hit.The Greater Good:
Psionics can only be learned from interrogating a psionic alien.Marathon:
The game takes considerably longer to complete. Results Driven:
A country offers less funding as its panic level increases.High Stakes:
Random rewards for stopping alien abductions.Diminishing Returns:
Increased cost of satellite construction.More Than Human:
The psionic gift is extremely rare.
Furthermore, an additional 4 options will be available to those that have completed the game once on the Impossible difficulty setting:War Weariness:
Funding goes down over time.E-115:
Elerium degrades over time.Total loss:
Lose all soldier gear upon death.Alternate Sources:
The power source cost to build facilities increases dramatically.
A few bug fixes have also been included, such as the AI teleportation issue and the "Defeat" screen being displayed upon completion of the game.
The next time you fire up XCOM: Enemy Unknown
, the "Second Wave" title update will begin downloading. Once it's finished installing, which options will YOU choose?
