This report is for the period January 14th to January 20th 2013
Last week I promised that this week would see the release of the Stats for the entire year of 2012. Unfortunately, we've experienced some unexpected delays, not least of which is Cornelius, one of my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, climbing inside the Statistitron 3000 because he thought he saw a Geonosian bug crawling around in the inner workings. He's been stuck in there for a few days now and there's a funny smell emanating from it, so I'm afraid to turn it on and get the final numbers for the tables. I've called a specialist in to come and take a look at it, but with it being the weekend and all... So I'm super sorry if you were pumped for the 2012 Stats article this week, but I promise you'll be satisfied next week. That's a Wookiee promise too, so I'm locked into honouring it on penalty of Rancor.
Back to this week's stats and it looks like a retail release will finally be shaking up the numbers a little on retail and there's an unexpected surge for one game on arcade, but overall things are still looking a little samey.Games Started
21,615 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 32,007 games between them (1,801 different games).
Dante may have a new look, some new moves and a sort of new backstory, but he still knows how kick ass and take names. DmC: Devil May Cry
slices and shoots its way into the top spot with over 2,000 starters. However, the main reason that seems so much higher than the rest of the table is because it is mostly made up of older popular games that have been hanging around for a while now, sot the numbers aren't totally ground-breaking. Time will tell whether this hack-n-slash will have the staying power of some other recent releases, such as Far Cry 3
, which slips into number two after weeks at the top.
Although it held the edge over its rival for the last few weeks, Halo 4
now slips back below Call of Duty: Black Ops II
, into second and third place, although there are only 25 starters separating the two now.Sleeping Dogs
pops back up onto the table in ninth with over 300 starters, no doubt thanks to the Games on Demand version and a selection of DLC being on sale as part of the Deal of the Week
Last week's new release, Anarchy Reigns
, tumbles from second to tenth place, over halving its starters. I think it will probably vanish next week, meaning its reign was very short lived, if non-existent. Top Retail Games Started
After The Walking Dead (Xbox 360)
monopolised Arcade Games Started for the last couple of weeks, the free-to-play actioner, Happy Wars (Xbox 360)
, jumps back into the top spot. It almost triples its number of starters this week, going from around 350 to over 1,000. Now I'm going to plug the site a little and say that this surge is thanks to the Fan Appreciation Campaign
that the makers of the game launched after we voted it the Best Action Game of the year. If that's the case, it's pretty damn cool. If it's because of something else I'm missing, then let me know. The Walking Dead
doesn't seem too happy about being knocked down into second place though, as it picks up exactly 666 starters. Spooky. Is that an attempt at a zombie curse or something? Whatever, shufflers, you don't scare me.
The arcade titles from the recent 2K sale
, Axel & Pixel
and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom
, continue to maintain their presence on the table, slipping slightly from second and third to fifth and sixth places. Top Arcade Games Started
Yeah, yeah, AlphaJax (WP)
stays on top in Windows Phone Started. Well, it is
free. It even maintains pretty steady numbers, only dropping 7 from last week and keeping over the 100 mark.
Two new releases this week pick up enough starters to plonk them on the table: Flight Control Rocket (WP)
grabs 110 starters in second place and Blobster (WP)
gets 71 for a lower fifth place spot. Like last week's new release, Picnic Wars (WP)
, both of these titles are Nokia exclusives. That doesn't stop them picking up fairly decent numbers, but you may notice that Picnic Wars
is nowhere to be found this week, so maybe these too will drop off the charts quickly.Top Windows Phone Games StartedGames Completed
8,809 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 12,472 games between them (1,235 different games).
The relatively easy completion of the "Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt" DLC puts Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360)
right at the top of Retail Games Completed yet again, much like every other DLC for the title has. On this table, over 1,000 players completed it. To date, over 2,000 have finished it, so expect to see it high on the table next week too.
The surge of numbers for Borderlands
shouldn't take away from Far Cry 3
's impressive number of completions. It only drops by 20 this week, maintaining around 450 completions. The overall completion percentage for the game also continues to grow, with over 14% of players having now finished it off.
Like it did for Games Started, Sleeping Dogs
gets a boost in Games Completed, with 150 completions and a fourth place spot. Now, I know it's an easy completion, but I doubt many players managed to do the whole thing in that time. Most of these are probably from people picking up the "Nightmare in North Point" DLC that was also part of the Deal of the Week.Top Retail Games CompletedThe Walking Dead
can't be too bitter about losing pole position in Arcade Games Started, when it still manages to pull in such a hefty amount of completions. Despite dropping by almost 300 completions, the game still pulls in around 850, comfortably retaining the lead.
Although last week saw a massive drop in the number of its completions, Doritos Crash Course
manages to keep second place by only dropping by 150 this week.Top Arcade Games Completed
Now that most players have picked up the easy completion for the popular Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (WP)
, it slips from first to third this week, allowing other easy completions Turn N Run (WP)
and Cut The Rope (WP)
to take the top two spots.AlphaJax
makes its first appearance on the chart this week as enough players have been slogging through it to get 24 completions and a ninth place spot. Like that game, the recent Nokia exclusive titles, Flight Control Rocket
, are much tougher completions than most Windows Phone games and don't make an appearance. Both have less than 10 completions to date. And that's ignoring Picnic Wars
, whose completion is hampered by a pesky unobtainable.Top Windows Phone Games CompletedAchievements Won
57,423 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 704,993 achievements online between them (48,189 different achievements).
After Far Cry
shaped domination on Retail Achievements Won for a few weeks, this week it's nowhere to be seen as the table is mostly filled with those from DMC: Devil May Cry
. All three of the "Big Game Hunt" DLC achievements for Borderlands 2
also crop up, with Face Off
far and away the most popular, with nearly 3,000 players earning it - 1,000 more than the next achievement down.Top Retail Achievements Won
With the surge of new players, Happy Wars
steals half of the spaces from The Walking Dead
this week. With the achievements for the adventure game all coming from the final episode, this also suggests that most players are reaching the finale of the game, so it's little wonder that it's slipping down the table.Top Arcade Achievements WonAlphaJax
also manages to lose its clean sweep status this week, with the two easiest achievements for Flight Control Rocket
being picked up just enough to put them in the bottom two spots.Top Windows Phone Achievements Won
Both Shooter and Action-Adventure drop their numbers slightly this week, meaning the slight edge Shooter has over its rival remains. DMC: Devil May Cry
and the surge in starters for Happy Wars
both push up the numbers considerably for Action. It adds around 1,000,000 to its score and leaps over Role-Playing into third. Even the extra boost of around 500,000 given to Role-Playing by Borderlands 2
isn't enough to challenge it.Total TrueAchievements won by Genre
That's it for this week. See you next week, along with the previously promised yearly stats for 2012. And don't forget my punishment if I break the Wookiee promise - this guy
can get a call. Things are looking positive though. I just heard whimpering from inside the Statistitron 3000.
