TA Gaming Stats - February 11th to 17th 2013

By Chewie, 3 years ago
This report is for the period February 11th to February 17th 2013.

Welcome to this week's exciting Stats instalment, which sees two space-based, alien-killing, pants-soiling titles go head to head on the retail chart. This was the week of Valentines Day and, rather than spending it with their loved one (me), my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, spent the day pretending to be a squad of Marines and taking on Xenomorphs in their droves. In the spirit of the occasion, they nominated Xander, the prettiest Statistlce, as the 'Vasquez' of the group and proceeded to hurl sexist, abusive remarks every which way whilst Xander racked up the most kills and showed those grunts who's boss. All in all, it was a very romantic evening.

Games Started
23,320 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 34,163 games between them (1,772 different games).

Newly released sci-fi/horror action shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines, lands in first place on Retail Games Started, with over 3,800 starters, leaving last week's newly released sci-fi/horror action shooter, Dead Space 3, to slip into second, dropping by nearly 4,000 starters to just over 1,800. This is quite a significant drop off, but we may see Dead Space 3 hanging onto a high spot in the weeks to come due some fairly decent reviews and the enduring popularity of the series. With fewer debut week starters (almost 2,000 fewer) and much worse reviews, will the popularity of its franchise be enough for Aliens to maintain a foothold on the charts in the coming weeks? The Xenonmorphs may have beaten the Necromorphs in this round, but I think the Necros will have the Xenos licked when all is said and done.

Most of the rest of the titles on the table have settled into a regular and steady order on the charts, with most slightly increasing their number of starters over last week's numbers. With only a few hundred starters between all the different titles, it's interesting to see that they are so settled and don't swap and change much at all. Highlighting how close all the titles are is last month's new release, DmC: Devil May Cry, which is the biggest mover on the chart, tumbling down from fourth to eighth place but only dropping by 37 starters. The new release from two weeks ago, Hitman HD Pack, slips away, whereas 47's other effort, Hitman: Absolution, maintains its low table position.

Along with the regular favourites, sales dominate the Arcade Games Started table again. The most recent new releases, The Cave, Skulls of the Shogun and Special Forces: Team X are nowhere to be seen. This week's new release, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On, only manages 120 starters and an eighth place position. Although, I guess that's not too bad for a retro Japan-only release. It's not exactly a new release, but the newly re-released Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels Plus manages to secure a number four spot with almost 190 starters.

Sales-wise, Zombie Driver HD proves to be by far the most popular title from the week's Zombie-themed Deal of the Week, securing an impressive number two spot with over 230 starters. Thanks to a decent discount on the Scratch & Match portion of the Sales & Specials+ app, Spelunky manages to dig its way into fifth place. Two popular titles from the previous week's Deal of the Week, Hydrophobia and Alan Wake's American Nightmare, make up the bottom two places.

The rest of the table? Well, if I told you The Walking Dead (Xbox 360) sat securely on the top spot still, would you be surprised? No? Heck, it even picks up 70 more starters than the week before for some reason. Well, would you be shocked if I said that the final few spots are filled by Happy Wars (Xbox 360), Karaoke and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition? Thought not.

Neither Earthworm Jim (WP) nor Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles HD (WP) are new titles for the Windows Phone platform so some of you may be surprised to see them on top of the Windows Phone Games Started table by such a considerable margin. When I tell you that, seemingly accidentally and for only a brief time, both games were made free, then you'll probably understand. Apparently, word on the extreme discount spread fast and over 400 players started each title, shooting them to the top of the chart.

It's probably for the best as, without those two big hitters, the table would have been pretty tedious, with low numbers of starters and mostly the same old games from the past few weeks, including all the usual freebies.

Games Completed
7,113 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 9,825 games between them (1,247 different games).

Retail Games Completed sees all of the same titles as the last few weeks, with Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360) still leading the way and none of the new releases pulling in enough completions to make the table: Hitman HD Trilogy reminds us that the earlier games in the series are noticeably harder than Hitman: Absolution the three unlockable difficulties in Dead Space 3 seem to be the main sticking point for most players; Aliens doesn't seem too difficult by comparison and may make the table in the weeks to come (maybe even next week).

Top Retail Games Completed

New release Cyber Troopers Virtual-On proves just as easy as the other SEGA Vintage games recently released, pulling in over 100 completions and a third place position on Acade Games Completed. The other Japan-only release that partnered the title, Virtua Striker, also pulls in high completions and a fourth place finish, despite not getting enough starters to be on Games Started. Both games pull in over 90% of players completing them, putting them alongside some other easily completed vintage SEGA titles on the table, such as Sonic the Fighters and Virtua Fighter 2.

The Walking Dead continues to pull in the massive completions and, despite falling significantly in numbers for the past few weeks, actually pulls in almost 40 more completions this week than last week, with over 400.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Despite the huge bump in starters for Assassin's Creed and Earthworm Jim, neither game pulls in enough completions to put them in Windows Phone Games Completed this week. Instead, Shuffle Party (WP) continues to dominate and most of the rest of the table is very similar to previous weeks. True to form, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (WP) makes its alternating reappearance on the table in tenth place.

Can anyone explain the appearance of Angry Birds Star Wars (WP) in ninth place? Is it simply because now enough time has passed for players to pick up the grindier achievements in the game? Or is it just that, with only 19 completions (one more than the bottom spot) it just so happened to get just enough to put it on the table.

Achievements Won
60,937 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 723,578 achievements online between them (48,749 different achievements).

The motley crew of marines from Aliens do a sweep on Retails Achievements Won and, luckily for them, it's a clean one. Most of these achievements are for early story progression and for doing something in the game for the first time, such as collecting some poor sod's Dog Tag, editing your loadout and surviving the loving embrace of a Facehugger.

Yet again we see a clean sweep for The Walking Dead on Arcade Games Completed. Although as usual the majority of achievements come from the final episode, suggesting that most players are reaching the end, the last two come from earlier in the series, with these two both being from episode two. This game is a real 'hanger-on'; much like most zombies, in fact.

With their massive joint popularity this week, it's no surprise that Assassin's Creed and Earthworm Jim share the Windows Phone Achievements Won table. Strangely, this leads me into the fantasy of a cross-over title where Earthworm Jim gets beamed to Renaissance Era Venice to become a deadly anachronistic assassin and Ezio gets transported to New Junk City to find out what difficult platforming is really like. None of your fancy-pantsy free-running here, boyo.

Although Action-Adventure maintains a solid 7,000,000 at the top of Genre, Aliens manages to claw back some numbers for Shooter, as we see it increase by almost 2,000,000 in second place. After last week's dip in numbers, this week sees most of the rest of the Genres regain some ground and raise their numbers slightly, however no individual one does enough to alter the order significantly, except for Puzzle dropping a few places from seventh to tenth.

That's all for now folks. Tune in next week, when we see two more sci-fi tinged games, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Crysis 3, take on the two current big hitters and see who comes out on top.
