TA Gaming Stats - February 18th to 24th 2013

By Chewie, 5 years ago
This report is for the period February 18th to February 24th 2013 .

Firstly, an apology. This is actually the Stats article that should have have been out last week. I'm sorry if you were all sitting patiently waiting for it, only to become bitterly disappointed, then sad, then angry, then inconsolable when it failed to appear. I have a good excuse though. Promise. My lovely Wookiee wifey has managed to secure a new job out of town that meant we suddenly had to spend a good amount of time last week planning out our futures and searching for a new place to live. This is no mean feat as 'out of town' on Kashyyyk literally means the middle of the forest, so searching for a suitable tree hut with enough storage space out back to house all of my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, ain't easy. Sure, a good sized box would do. But the ability to surround it with electric fencing and barbed wire is another matter.

What this means is that this week you get a double dip of lovely Stats. Aren't you lucky?!? This article is for the third week of Februrary and the other one gives us the goods for the end of the month into the beginning of March.

Games Started
23,449 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 34,250 games between them (1,776 different games).

Two big new releases this week storm onto the top of the table: Crysis 3 grabs almost 3,000 starters, whereas Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance pulls in a little over 2,000. These aren't bad numbers by any means, but they fall a fair bit short of the other new releases of previous weeks (Dead Space 3 grabbed over 5,000. Aliens: Colonial Marines reached almost 4,000). With those two titles still also riding high in the charts at third and fourth it's a Sci-Fi fest this week. I'd say 'Sci-Fi shooter fest', but I don't think you can really class Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance as a shooter; more of a slicer. Another Sci-Fi title makes an appearance on the table, even though it's quite an old one. Only available through digital download on Games on Demand, the first Crysis takes eighth place with over 370 starters. This isn't just a surge of popularity for the game due to the sequel's release; it's thanks to preorders of the title receiving a download code of the original for the low price of free. Those lucky pups.

The other games on the table are the same old dusty ones from the past couple of months, including Far Cry 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Halo 4, Assassin's Creed III and Dishonored. The number of starters for them has remained steady over the last few weeks so it's going to take some more new releases to knock them off for good. Looking at the upcoming release schedule, it's not going to take long for that to happen.

Both new releases on Arcade for the week make their appearance on Arcade Games Started, with one being a lot more popular than the other. This is probably mostly thanks to a significant portion of nostalgia as CAPCOM Arcade Cabinet takes first place with over 350 starters, knocking The Walking Dead (Xbox 360) from the top spot for the first time in a few weeks. The other new release, Serious Sam: Double D XXL, which is an indie-developed, side-scrolling, Serious Sam spin-off (Serious Spam-off?), only takes in 70 starters and a ninth place spot, despite its generous cup size.

Last week's re-release, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels Plus drops by only 50 starters and one spot on the table, slipping from fourth to fifth. The previous week's Deal of the Week game, Zombie Driver HD, also continues to prove popular as it halves its starters to just over 100, but settles into a mid-table position at sixth. The following week's Deal of the Week was only Elder Scrolls related so makes no impact on Arcade this week. Despite disappearing into the depths last week, Double Fine's recent new release, The Cave, reappears in tenth with just under 70 starters.

Top Arcade Games Started

Windows Phones Games Started sees a decent shake up for once with a quartet of new releases pulling in between 170 and 270 new starters in the top four places. These are pretty good numbers considering that the top three titles, Bejeweled Live + (WP), Zuma's Revenge! (WP) and Yahtzee (WP), are all Nokia exclusives and Angry Birds Seasons (WP) is only available on Windows 8 phones.

Last week saw Earthworm Jim (WP) and Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles HD (WP) shoot to the top of the table after being made accidentally free. Although the price was quickly reverted, that hasn't stopped people starting the games the following week after picking them up. This means that Assassin's Creed continues to appear on the table, at the bottom, with 50 starters.

Games Completed
6,965 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 9,846 games between them (1,287 different games).

"The Infamy", the history-bending first part of the "Tyranny of King Washington" DLC series for Assassin's Creed III proves a popular and easy expansion, boosting the game back onto the Retail Games Completed table and up to the top spot with almost 450 completions.

A week after release Aliens: CM débuts on the table at third with just over 200 completions. Despite being released a week before, Dead Space 3 has yet to appear due to the hardness (and multiple playthroughs required) of the extra difficulty levels. Interestingly enough, however, we see that the original game in the limb-slicing action-horror series, Dead Space, does make an appearance. It grabs over 50 completions and a ninth place spot thanks to a boost in people finishing the game, no doubt due to the popularity of the latest iteration.

The other games on the table are the same ones as the previous few weeks, with the notable exception of Halo 4, which vanishes after its fourth place position and 100 completions of last week. It's not all that mysterious though. This is thanks to the "Majestic Map Pack" appearing on the Marketplace before release. Next week will be a different story, I'm sure...

Top Retail Games Completed

Arcade Games Completed is very similar to last week's with the same popular and super easy titles filling up the list, particularly The Walking Dead which still dominates after weeks on the top. After last week's small bump in numbers however, it now dips again by 50 to over 350 completions.

The rest of the table is dominated by SEGA Vintage titles, including last week's new and easy titles, the Japan-only releases, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On and Virtua Striker, which slip down to the bottom of the table with both at around 40 completions each.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Windows Phone Games Completed doesn't see much shifting in terms of titles or numbers apart from the appearance Assassin's Creed, which makes an appearance at the bottom with just over 20 completions; just like it did on Games Started.

Achievements Won
62,046 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 708,324 achievements online between them (49,242 different achievements).

With the two big new releases and the Assassin's Creed DLC, the achievements on Retail Achievements Won are a nice mix this week. Six spots, including the top two, are taken by Crysis 3, with a mix of story based and simple cumulative achievements. Three MGR: I'm Not Writing That Made Up Word Again achievements make appearances. The first achievement of "The Tyranny of King Washington: The Infamy", Uniquely Familiar pops up in the middle of the table.

Top Retail Achievements Won

For the first time in umpteen weeks (I could check for a precise number, but umpteen sounds about right), The Walking Dead doesn't get a clean sweep on Arcade Achievements Won. The two easiest achievements for CAPCOM Arcade Cabinet squeeze into the middle of the table. No other achievements from the game make an appearance though as there's is a massive drop in in players who have picked up any more in the game (currently from 91% for Art Lover to 34% for Arcade Master)

Top Arcade Achievements Won

The two most popular new Windows Phone releases, Zuma's Revenge! and Bejewled Live +, easily make up the bulk of places on Windows Phone Achievements Won, with ninth place reserved for the easiest achievement in Yahtzee.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Crysises (Cryses? Crysus?) 1 and 3 help pull shooter up over the 6million mark in Genre this week. Couple that with a drop in 1million for Action-Adventure and the gap has closed between the two genres considerably. There's now less than 200,000 that separates them, but Action-Adventure still has the edge in first place. MGR:R and CAPCOM Arcade Cabinet help give Action a bit of a boost in numbers, but it stays in the third place. Three of the four Window Phone releases (Yahtzee is Card & Board) also push Puzzle up from tenth to seventh.

That's all for this week of Stats. I'd say tune in next week to see what happened the following week here at TA, but that would be a lie. You just have to look here. I'd also say that I predict the next article is going to be quite heavily influenced by the Ultimate Games Sale for Games on Demand titles that was going on that week, but that would also be a lie. I know it does. I'm looking at the numbers right now.
