This particular news story has it roots way back in 2005. Can you remember that far back? I was a student personally so my memories are somewhat clouded by alcohol and cheesy chips... Regardless however, it was rumoured way back then that the X-Com
series was to be revived and hustled into the next generation of console gaming.
These rumours have held fast as 2K Marin
(the developer behind BioShock 2
) confirmed that they are working on an X-Com
title for the PC and Xbox 360, in a press release issued only today.
The press release was keen to call upon BioShock
as an example of their ability to create a believable and involving experience as they noted they have...
... proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling [with BioShock], and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise
There's a difference with this realisation of X-Com
however, it's to be conducted in an FPS style rather than the tactical style associated with previous incarnations of the game. This slice of information alone is likely prove divisive but 2K Marin
believe an FPS approach to be the correct one as...
By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.
Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride
Speaking further of the intended content and style of the game, Christoph Hartmann (president of 2K
) commented that
... [In the shoes of an FBI agent] players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension.
All that remains to be said is the clichéd yet necessary proviso of 'watch this space' for further information which we'll relay as 2K
makes it available.
For now I'll leave you with the single screen-shot which 2K
have released alongside their latest informationhttp://twitpic.com/1fgn7a
