This report is for the period February 25th to March 3rd 2013
If you've clicked on this Stats article and are interested to know why there are two together on the front page, go to the other one here
for a bit of an explanation. For those who aren't interested in the past and that article, I'll sum it up by saying 'House hunting + Statisticle storage solutions sought = Delayed data'.
As I mention at the end of the other one, this article is going to be quite influenced by the Ultimate Game Sale
for Games on Demand titles that went on throughout this week and into the next one. Keep reading to find out which games proved the most popular and how they stood up against the other games on the Retail tables. We also get a couple of new releases on Arcade to challenge The Walking Dead (Xbox 360)
's reign and a bit of DLC that pulls in some massive numbers for two of the tables.Games Started
23,457 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 34,934 games between them (1,773 different games).
I'll start by getting the new releases out of the way for Retail Games Started. Oh wait, there aren't any
. After a few weeks of solid biggish name releases, we hit a quiet week in preparation for next week's release of Tomb Raider
... Hang on a sec. What's that I spy in ninth place? Looks like Lara came onto the table a little earlier than planned as around 450 people managed to get their hands all over her in the days before the game's official release date. Also, I may be stretching the truth when I say there were no proper new releases this week; it's just that MUD: FIM Motocross World Championship
and Top Hand Rodeo
don't have quite enough starters to put them on the table.
Three of the recent releases retain solid places on the table, with Crysis 3
and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
retaining the top two spots, although with both seeing their numbers drop by well over a thousand. Dead Space 3
slips a place into fourth and almost halves its starters from just under 1,000 to a bit over 500. The only other title on the table from previous weeks is Far Cry 3
in seventh, as Aliens: Colonial Marines
drops below it and off the table completely.
The other five spots are made up of Games on Demand titles that were part of the Ultimate Game Sale. The most popular is Codemasters' 2008 racer, GRID
, which pulls in an impressive 600 starters and a third place position. Another Codemasters racer, 2009's DiRT 2
, also makes the table in sixth with over 550 starters.
One title I didn't expect to see so high on the table was El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
. I must admit as to never having heard of the game before it cropped up in the sale. However, many of you were drawn to the game at its bargain price. It grabbed over 550 new starters for a fifth place position, and probably would have got more if the On Demand version had been available in most European territories. It also wasn't available here on Kashyyyk either, so I guess I'll never know what all the fuss was about.
Of the selection of franchise specific sale days, including Halo Day
and Assassin's Creed Day
, the most popular franchise seems to have been Resident Evil
. Two titles from the infected-slaying series make an appearance: Resident Evil 6 (Xbox 360)
in eighth and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD
in tenth. However, a big part of the reason for the latter's popularity is probably due to the fact that, unlike the majority of other titles in the sale, this game is not available to get in disc form in most regions so people grabbed it at a lower price when they could; me included.Top Retail Games Started
Two new releases on the Arcade this week sandwich The Walking Dead
into second place. Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds
manages 480 starters for a first place position, whilst Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
takes home 220 in third.
Last week's new release, CAPCOM Arcade Cabinet
, slides down the chart from first to sixth, losing over 200 starters in the process, now that the initial burst of nostalgia has worn off.
The release of the "Star Wars Pinball" tables for Pinball FX2 (Xbox 360)
sees the game make an appearance at the bottom of the chart with just over 50 starters. I must confess that I originally felt the strong urge to see myself immortalised in digital pinball magic, but the price tag put me off. Also, I suck at pinball: too tall, too slow, too angry. So, instead, I settled with singing this song to myself:
'He's a pinball Jedi
There's got to be a twist.
A pinball Jedi,
Hand's cut off at the wrist.'Top Arcade Games Started
High-powered new Windows 8 racer Asphalt 7: Heat (WP)
zooms into the top spot on Widows Phone Games Started, pulling in over 220 starters, despite talk of the game being too much of a memory hog for many phones.
Last week's triplet of new Nokia exclusives, Bejeweled Live + (WP)
, Zuma's Revenge! (WP)
and Yahtzee (WP)
, tumble down the table after their high placings last week in first, second third. They end up in sixth, seventh and ninth places this week, all knocking off between 130 and 200 from their numbers of starters.
This drop allows last week's other new release, Angry Birds Seasons (WP)
, to jump from fourth to second this week, despite knocking nearly 90 off its own number of starters from 170 to just over 80.Top Windows Phone Games StartedGames Completed
7,592 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,521 games between them (1,248 different games).
As predicted last week, after Halo 4
disappeared from Retail Games Completed due to the appearance of new DLC for the game, it reappears now with a vengeance as over 1,600 players complete the seemingly simple "Majestic Map Pack" DLC. That's more completions than the rest of the table combined, showing how popular the game still is and also just how easy these DLCs are. I think we'll see the title high on the charts in the weeks to come as the stragglers (all thousands of them) pick up and complete the pack.Far Cry 3
continues to pull in high completions of around 200 in second place. It'll be interesting to see if the patch that was recently released
will have an impact on these numbers, seeing as it now allows Outposts to be reset, meaning that two achievements can now be obtained by those who may have missed them (Unheard
and Fully Inked
) for the completion.Crysis 3
appears on the table only a week after release in third place with 135 completions. At over 4%, the game already has a higher completion percentage than its predecessor, Crysis 2
(nearly 3%), which had a few notoriously buggy achievements. Speaking of predecessors, the original game, Crysis
, makes an appearance in ninth with 80 completions. This is thanks to being given as a preorder bonus for the latest game and also for being a much easier completion (currently at over 27%).
After last week's surge of completions thanks to the first part of the "Tyranny of King Washington" DLC, Assassin's Creed III
drops by over 300 completions this week, settling into fourth with a little over 130.Top Retail Games Completed
I don't think I really have anything to say about Arcade Games Completed this week, seeing as it's almost exactly the same
as the last few weeks: Walking Dead
blah blah. SEGA Vintage yaddah yaddah. The only think of note is new release Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds
taking third place with over 90 completions. Other new release, Runner 2
seems quite a bit more difficult and doesn't make an appearance. With only 5% of players having finished it and with so many easy completions consistently dominating the table, I don't think it ever will.Top Arcade Games Completed
Like Arcade, Windows Phone Games Completed is almost a copy/paste of the previous couple of weeks. Notable exceptions include: Angry Birds Seasons (WP)
in fifth with much less grindy achievements than Angry Birds (WP)
and Angry Birds Space (WP)
; and Rise of Glory (WP)
(randomly?) in sixth.Top Windows Phone Games CompletedAchievements Won
63,023 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 726,231 achievements online between them (49,004 different achievements).
Unsurprisingly, the ten achievements in the "Majestic Map Pack" DLC for Halo 4
are the ten Top Retail Achievements Won this week, giving the game an easy clean sweep.Top Retail Achievements Won
After finding its ubiquitous clean sweep status in Arcade Achievements Won interrupted last week by CAPCOM Arcade Cabinet
, this week The Walking Dead
is unceremoniously dumped from the table entirely as Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds
takes its own clean sweep with ten super easy achievements.Top Arcade Achievements Won
New release Asphalt 7: Heat
heats up Windows Phone Achievements Won by taking six spots on the table, including the top five. Thanks to a patch, a couple of glitchy achievements for AlphaJax (WP)
are now fixed, including Decennial
, which is why it takes the number six spot, ahead of easier Unpredictable
in ninth and tenthTop Windows Phone Achievements Won
After the gap between Action-Adventure and Shooter closed to almost nothing last week on Genre, this week sees Shooter jump ahead of its rival for the first time in over a month. It grows its numbers by over 70,000 to over 6.8million, whereas Action-Adventure drops by over 400,000 to under 5.9million, despite many of the titles on the charts falling into that genre. Elsewhere, the popularity of the driving games in the sale puts Racing over Sports into fifth placeTotal TrueAchievements won by Genre
That's all she wrote for charts this week. I hope the double dip hasn't dazzled you with numbers too much. Next week we'll be continuing to see the effects of the Games on Demand sale on the Retail charts as well as the Deal of the Week making sure those pesky SEGA Vintage titles don't go anywhere on Arcade.
Also, I've been talking with the big man upstairs about making a change or two to the articles based on some of your ideas and we may start to see them filtering in in the weeks to come. Don't worry though, the Statisticles aren't going anywhere.
