Perhaps, if you're a musician, you know that you've really made it big in popular culture when a game is out that focuses on your work. The Beatles: Rock Band
and Michael Jackson: The Experience
are fine examples of that fact.
You know that you've really stepped up into the next level when a game that doesn't necessarily focus on your music has you as its star. Take, for example, the many-would-say surprisingly good 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
. Today, 505 Games has revealed that they are going to give a new musician the game treatment, but we're going to take a second to let you guess who (Hint: Read the title of the game in the headline).
Yes, folks, that's right. Snoop Dogg, or Snoop Lion as he's now calling himself, will be the star of a brand new rhythm action combat title (new genre, ahoy, since the only comparable games I can think of, Gitaroo Man
and Elite Beat Agents
, are not 360 titles!) called Way of the Dogg
. The game seeks to combine Snoop's passion for Kung-Fu with his chart-topping beats to create a unique gaming experience. Each level will focus around a specific track, and you'll be tasked with matching the beats so Snoop can achieve victory against various enemies in various locations.
Here's Snoop Dogg with a few words on the title:
Everyone knows that Snoop is down with the biggest and best video games whether it’s droppin’ my hits on the soundtrack or showing the world I can go toe-to-toe with the best fighters on the street but Way of the Dogg is the first true gamification of my music. It’s the way you live, it’s the way you do what you do and captures the beat, the rhythm and the spirit of my music. It’s not just about who you are or where you’ve been but where you are headed to. This game shows how we evolve as individuals and they’ve incorporated the journey of my own personal reincarnation as Snoop Lion into my character, the environments and the path that players have to follow
Meanwhile, Ciaran Walsh, Director, Echo Peak, let's us know some of the history that led us to this point:
Snoop Dogg is a true one-off and from our first creative discussions two years ago the idea of creating an original game concept around his music and love of ‘70s Kung Fu and Blaxploitation movies was a mouth-watering prospect. The game brings these influences together in the form of visually stylish rhythm-action combat wrapped in a Blaxploitation-inspired narrative. 505 Games understood our vision from the start and were willing to take a chance on us as a start-up studio – they’ve been a fantastic partner for us.
To help build up some excitement, the developer, Echo Peak, has released a Behind the Scenes video featuring the man himself:
Snoop Dogg's "gamification" is set to release alongside his upcoming album "REINCARNATED". The album is due on April 23rd, so you can expect the game around then. For those curious, there was no mention of Kinect functionality for the game.
