TA Gaming Stats - March 25th to March 31st 2013

By Chewie, 3 years ago
This report is for the period March 25th to March 31st 2013.

Welcome to the Stats for the final week of March. For those who care to know, my house move went as well as can be expected, with minimal loss of Ewok life (67%). Speaking of my furry helpers, the Statisticles should be especially proud at the moment. I don't know if you've noticed, but the site has been going through some changes recently, including a brand new look. I'm happy to say that a select few of the Statisticles are actually powering some of the changes and new features. I mean it. They're on these giant hamster wheel things hooked up to cables and super-computers. Don't worry though, I've still got them working on the Stats while they're spinning round. Although, I'm finding the numbers are a little rounder than normal. Lot's of 0s and 8s.

Games Started
40,078 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 55,605 games between them (1,799 different games).

Last week saw the biggest new release of the year so far, Gears of War: Judgment, with over 14,500 new starters. This week, the record is smashed by BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360), which adds another 2,000 to that number and easily takes the top spot on Retail Games Started. Meanwhile, GoW: Judgments slips into second, knocking over 10,000 off its number of starters, to just over 3,000.

The week sees two other new releases make it onto the chart, Army of TWO: The Devil's Cartel in third with over 1,700 starters (almost a tenth of Bioshock) and Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 in sixth with just over 600 (around a 27th of Bisohock!).

Tomb Raider only loses 200 starters from last week's nearly 1,500, but slips a place from third to fourth. Last week's new release, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, loses a much more significant number. Nearly two thirds (over 1250 starters) are decapitated from its numbers, causing it to slide from second to fifth.

For the second week running, the ever popular Far Cry 3 manages to grow its numbers, this time by almost 20. However, it still loses its fourth place position and tumbles down to seventh place thanks to all the new releases.

Previous recent releases, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3, slip off the chart entirely and are replaced by the more continuously popular games of the end of last year, Assassin's Creed III, Hitman: Absolution and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Poor old Terraria (Xbox 360). If this were any other week, the popular Adventure title would have taken a well-deserved top spot on Arcade Games Started with an impressive almost 2,000 starters. But then The Walking Dead (Xbox 360) had to go and ruin it. Not content with being at the top end of the Arcade related tables for most of the last year, the recent Spring sale helped shoot the game back up into the thousands of starters, beating Terraria by only twelve. The Spring sale also helped put both Arcade Dead Rising 2 (Xbox 360) spin-offs, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero and Dead Rising 2: Case West, onto the table in seventh and tenth.

I would've been a little confused to see older titles, The Maw and Toy Soldiers, in fourth and fifth, both with over 400 starters, but my friend feed here got filled up with people talking about a promotion where you could get both titles for the price of free with some mild jiggery pokery.

What I am confused about is why Trials Evolution also makes it into the top ten, in ninth with almost 75 starters, a week before it was discounted in the Microsoft Studios sale, which started a few days after these Stats.

An EA sale sees six of the spots on the table taken, with Monopoly (WP), Mirror's Edge (WP), Plants vs. Zombies (WP), Battleship (WP), Bejeweled Live (WP) and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (WP). Monopoly proved the most popular title, with almost 150 starters and a first place position, maybe because it is also the easiest completion. On the other end of the scale, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit pulls into ninth place with a little over 50 starters.

With the popularity of these sales titles, the only new release to make the table is Gravity Guy 2 (WP) in second place with 120 starters. I'm thinking that the following week's Microsoft Studios sale is going to have a similar effect on the tables.

Games Completed
7,061 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,117 games between them (1,306 different games).

You may be a little (Bio)shocked...sorry...to see Bioshock Infinite on the top of Retail Games Completed in the week of its release, with over 200 completions. Don't let that give you the impression that the game is super easy. It's just that with such a vast amount of players, the currently 4% of players who have already finished it was always going to be a pretty high number. Having said that, the significantly less popular new release of the week, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel also manages to make it onto the bottom of the table with nearly 100 completions. It currently stands at a higher 10% completion rate though, so seems an easier completion than Bioshock so far.

The rest of the table is made up of the same new releases or new DLC releases as the last few weeks, with the exception of The Walking Dead: SD, with enough players having done the required multiple playthroughs to earn completion a week after release to put it in eighth place with 130 completions.

Top Retail Games Completed

Despite the big new release of Terraria and all the free/sale titles popping up this week, none of those titles from Arcade Games Started get enough completions to put them on Arcade Games Completed, with the exception of the lonely Dead Rising 2: Case Zero in ninth place with nearly 40 completions. One game that was part of the Microsoft Studios sale but wasn't popular enough to make it onto Games Started was Full House Poker, which does make it onto Games Completed in fifth with over 50 completions, thanks to the release of the Texas Heat, Spring Season 2013 DLC.

Top Arcade Games Completed

There's that easy completion for Monopoly I was talking about earlier, pulling in closely behind Shark Dash (WP) with over 100 completions and only 38 less than the number of people who started it. None of the other sale titles make the list, which is otherwise very similar to previous weeks.

Achievements Won
76,517 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 1,072,794 achievements online between them (48,639 different achievements).

Bioshock Infinite takes the clean sweep on Retail Achievements Won, with last week's clean sweep holder, GoW: Judgment, not even getting a look in. Half of these are story related, with most of the rest being cumulative for doing the same action a number of times, such as looting or killing specific enemies or killing them in specific ways.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Thanks to the close finish in the top two spots on Arcade Games Started, it's nearly an even split between Terraria and The Walking Dead on Arcade Achievements Won, but again the latter game steals the top spot from the new release. We also get a single achievement, Treasure Hunter, for Happy Wars in the middle of the table, thanks to a Spring free ticket giveaway by the developers.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Eight out of the twelve Monopoly achievements make it onto Windows Phone Achievements Won, with two achievements for Shark Dash taking the bottom two spots. I'm sure the final four Monopoly achievements aren't far below.

And we thought GoW: Judgment had given Shooter a significant lead on Genre last week. This week, Bioshock Infinite takes last week's 10million and adds a hefty 6million to it, giving the genre an almost 10million lead over Action-Adventure. After last week's shuffle, the other genres mostly stay in the same positions this week, except for Card & Board making way for Strategy at the bottom, despite the popularity of Monopoly.

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre
  • Shooter16,494,186
  • Action-Adventure6,809,901
  • Role-Playing2,196,797
  • Action1,738,212

  • Adventure639,773
  • Platformer365,334

  • Card & Board257,141

Tune in next week to see if Defiance and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge do enough to topple the heavy hitters at the top. Here's a clue: they won't. We'll also be bringing you the Stats for the whole of March so you can see if Bioshock has done enough in one week to put it on the top of the chart for the whole month, or if the extra week GoW has over it will mean it'll have to settle for second. Heck, even the cumulative total of Tomb Raider's numbers throughout the month may be enough to put Lara on top. It's nail biting stuff.
