TA Gaming Stats - April 8th to Apr 14th 2013

By Chewie, 5 years ago
This report is for the period April 8th to Apr 14th 2013.

Apologies for the delay getting this Stats article out this week. We were experiencing what can only be described as "network connectivity issue" here in the Stats office. Another way to describe it could be that Tertian, the Statisticle in charge of holding the aerial in just the right place to get any signal, chose the wrong time to take a toilet break. And, by wrong time, I mean a time. It's not too bad though because, after weeks of steady big name releases, get ready for a quiet one on the Stats front.

Games Started
25,209 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 42,296 games between them (1,826 different games).

In it's third week of release, BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360) still easily dominates on Retail Games Started, although it's helped by a complete dearth of new releases. It over halves its number of starters from 4,000 to 2000. In second place, last week's new release, Defiance, over halves its own number of starters but still retains a decent lead over the rest of the table.

Tomb Raider and Gears of War: Judgment swap places in third and fourth, with Lara taking over Baird and co by only 60 starters, despite being released two weeks earlier than the shooter prequel. I guess Lara just has more stamina than the thick-necked lugs.

The rest of the table reads very similarly to last week's with Army of TWO: The Devil's Cartel and Far Cry 3 retaining their fifth and sixth place positions. Other recent release, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct drops a place from seventh to eighth, losing 150 starters in the process, to 270.

Arcade Games Started doesn't give us anything much more exciting than the Retail table, barring a single new release: Motocross Madness. The avatar motorbike racing title will evoke many memories of the late 90s original and it's perhaps thanks to that nostalgia that it takes the top spot with 800 new starters. Last week's new release, BattleBlock Theater, drops to second place and the previous week's new release, Terraria (Xbox 360), drops to third, with both losing nearly two thirds of their starters.

The effects of the previous week's Microsoft Publisher Sale are still felt this week, with Mark of the Ninja, Deadlight and Dust: An Elysian Tail again making the table, and this week being joined by Trials Evolution at the bottom.

The only title from an Arcade heavy Deal of the Week is Marvel vs. Capcom Origins, which claims a mid-table position with 270 starters.

People love getting things for free. Gamers love getting games for free. Achievement hunters love getting gamerscore for free. These facts are proven in the huge gap between the top four titles on Windows Phone Games Started and the rest of the table. To celebrate the release of Gravity Guy 2 (WP), Miniclip offered four of their titles for the alluring price of zero. This puts Fragger (WP), Monster Island (WP), iStunt 2 (WP) and Gravity Guy (WP) at the top of the table with between a massive 970 and 1,600 starters.

People don't just love free stuff; they also like a good deal. Three of the remaining six titles on the chart appear thanks to a mix of Deals of the Week and previous sales, with Tiki Towers (WP) in fifth, Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles HD (WP) in sixth and Gerbil Physics (WP) in ninth, all thanks to discounts.

Despite being Windows Phone 8 only and parading a hefty price point, new release Modern Combat 4 (WP) manages to pull over just over 100 starters and a seventh place position, whilst last week's new release and number one title, Amazing Alex (WP), slips to eighth and loses over two thirds of its starters to just under 100.

Games Completed
8,229 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 11,452 games between them (1,293 different games).

The "Castle Map Pack" for Halo 4 denies Bioshock Infinite a second week at the top of Retail Games Completed. The easily completed DLC puts the Spartan shooter at the top yet again, with over 1,600 completions. Bioshock drops to second having also lost almost 200 off its number of completions to 640. The rest of the table is a wash, with mostly the same titles and similar numbers to last week.

Top Retail Games Completed

Speaking of a wash, Arcade Games Completed is also a very familiar story, with The Walking Dead and the SEGA Vintage Fighters again claiming the top spots alongside the easiest of the other recent sale titles. Like last week with BattleBlock Theater, this week's new release, Motocross Madness, is unlikely to make the table any time soon, thanks to not one but two currently unobtainable achievements.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Shark Dash (WP)'s three week reign at the top of Windows Phone Games Completed is disrupted this week thanks to two of the easiest of the most recent sale titles, the cutesy puzzlers Gerbil Physics and Monster Island. Apart from this change, the rest of the table reads similar to last week, with a mix of sale titles such as ilomilo (WP) and Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles HD (WP), mixed in with new Amazing Alex (WP) and old favourites Breeze (WP), Sudoku (WP) and Shuffle Party (WP).

Achievements Won
67,159 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 808,180 achievements online between them (48,894 different achievements).

The "Castle Map Pack" almost gives Halo 4 a clean sweep on Retail Achievements Won. In fact, the only thing stopping it from getting a clean sweep is the fact that the DLC only has nine achievements to it. The bottom place is instead filled with a solitary late story achievement for Bioshock Infinite, proving that the majority of players have now worked their way through most of the game's story.

Top Retail Achievements Won

The achievements are split evenly on Arcade Achievements Won between last week's new release, BattleBlock Theater, and this week's new release, Motocross Madness, with the latter claiming the top three spots.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Three of the four free Miniclip games share spots on Windows Phone share spots on Windows Phone Achievements Won, with Fragger grabbing the top four spots and Monster Island claiming most of the others, except for a solitary achievement for iStunt 2 in seventh.

With the dip in numbers for Gears of War Judgment putting it behind Tomb Raider, the gap between Shooter and Action-Adventure is lessened this week, although with no big releases, both Genres see a drop in numbers. Shooter drops by 2.4million to 9.7million, whereas Action-Adventure drops by 1.2million to 5.3million. The boost provided by Defiance for Role-Playing keeps it floating around the 3million mark.

Most of the rest of the chart remains similar to last week, with the only noticeable difference being a boost of over 200,00 for Puzzle and a jump from eighth to seventh, no doubt thanks to the free Puzzle Miniclip games, Fragger and Monster Island.

That's all for this week folks. Tune in next week to see if DC brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us has what it takes to beat the numbers into shape.
