When Deep Silver and Techland announced http://www.trueachievements.com/Dead-Island-Riptide-Xbo....htm
this past June, the response was nothing if not polarizing
. As the follow-up to their 2011 zombies in paradise RPG, http://www.trueachievements.com/Dead-Island-Xbox-360/ac....htm
, many gamers were skeptical and wondered if Riptide
would provide anything new (or at least bug-free).
The wait is almost over with the game set to release next week, and we've got a look at (some of) the achievements in this week's Achievement Preview Spotlight.
Let's start with the bad news, of Riptide
's 35 achievements, thirteen of them are "Secret" so this game definitely has a caveat emptor for completionists. Of the remaining 22 achievements, you'll have a garden variety of pops for hitting higher levels (50 and 70), finding collectibles, and killing enemies with different weapons. With those things in mind, let's take a look at a few note-worthy achievements.
One of the big selling points of the Dead Island
series is the co-op. As one could probably imagine, Riptide
continues this tradition and has achievements for playing with a friend.http://www.trueachievements.com/a175862/dream-team-achi....htm
Hope you've got some friends who are ready to saddle up and ride.
Speaking of slaying with friends, the next achievement definitely gets props for focusing on the teamwork aspect.http://www.trueachievements.com/a175879/its-an-order-ac....htm
With an achievement like that, many people are going to be comparing it to the spotting mechanic in Gears of War
. One can only hope that the devs at Techland did their homework on making a proper spotting/marking system.
The next achievement gets points for being referential to a pretty decent
I have the distinct feeling this is going to be one of those "oh crap" achievements that you either get in a fit of panic, or one that you have to meticulously plan for and have several trial-and-error sessions with near misses and "you've got to be kidding me!" moments.
The following achievement is like taking the SAT, it gets points for just showing up and every zombie game should have it.http://www.trueachievements.com/a175871/brainless-achie....htm
In a game that's stacking up to be as long as Riptide
, this achievement shouldn't be too much of a challenge.
There are several achievements that look like they could end up being the Holy Grail for Riptide
, but I'm going to give the following achievement the blue-ribbon award for excellence.http://www.trueachievements.com/a175881/hunterseeker-ac....htm
While I'm sure we'll have some incredible guides on locating these champion monsters within a few days of release, the simple challenge of taking down "champion monsters" should keep this achievement pretty healthy in terms of points.
Other high-value ratios for Riptide
look to be: Jetboat
(Kill 100 monsters using the boat's speed boost), Obtain level 70
, and The Hoarder
(Find all collectibles).
While we won't know if Techland has solved some of the tech issues that plagued Riptide
's predecessor, we do know that the game is set for release in North America on April 23rd and in Europe on April 26th. The question is, will you be buying (and completing) it?
If there's an upcoming game or DLC pack that you'd like to see featured in the Achievement Preview Spotlight, be sure to let us know in the comments!
