The One That Got Away

Fisherman and hunters are always fond of waxing poetic and talking about the “big one” that just managed to escape their grasp… that thirty point buck or beautiful marlin. As 360 gamers, and Achievement lovers at that, we probably strive to get 100% of the achievements in all of our games, but, as we all know, there are usually stragglers… achievements that we just couldn’t get for a few reasons. Here are my Top 5 reasons why we may have the “One That Got Away”.

5) Difficulty Level- I love Guitar Hero, but there is no way I can possibly get anywhere above the “Hard” difficulty. These games hearken back to those old-school, 8-bit games that you just couldn’t beat and needed to have the cheat codes to ever see the end screen.

4) Time Commitment- This is a big one for multiplayer heavy games. Achievements like “Win *X Number* of Online Matches” and “Kill *X Number* of Foes” force you to put in such a significant time commitment that it is virtually impossible to get. This is especially true if the game doesn’t reach the mass audience that the developer/publisher hoped and doesn’t have the long-term following that games like Halo 3, Gears of War, and Call of Duty get.

3) Battle a Developer- This is one of those Achievements where you have to play online with/against someone from the development team or with/against a gamer who already has. I was honestly shocked when I got this Achievement in Guitar Hero 3. Fortunately, we have this amazing site which serves as a perfect social network to find a fellow gamer and get it done.

2) Burnout- As a big fan of RPGs, this is where I end up falling short. I loved Fallout 3 and managed to get 100% of the Achievements on it, but I’ll be darned if it wasn’t downright painful to get three characters up to Level 20 in different karmas. I eventually “got smart” when getting to Level 30 and saved my “Neutral” character at Level 29 and reloaded from there to get all three. In other circumstances, games test my (occasionally) wafer thin attention span by asking me to play through them seven times to get all of those glorious points.

1) Obscurity- These are those weird Achievements that ask you to play the game in an unnatural way. My prime example is the “Little Rocket Man” achievement in The Orange Box. This Achievement asks you to carry a little Garden Gnome (think Travelocity) through an entire Episode and launching him in to space. While the feedback on this Achievement is incredibly positive (and fun… according to the solution-meisters) it is still quite obscure. This is kind of a double-edged sword. While these achievements are often fun to go after, sometimes they’re just a bit too out there.

That about sums up the reasons why I haven’t managed to get 100% on all of my games. Personally, my biggest “One That Got Away” is in Halo 3: ODST. I was rocking along with the achievements but got stuck on some of the Firefight ones (due to difficulty in finding times/teammates) and the crown jewel was “Vidmaster Challenge: Endure”… it’s still the one that got away.
