Achievement Preview Spotlight: CoJ: Gunslinger

By Jonathan Barnes, 3 years ago
After the release of their critically acclaimed downloadable spinoff, http://www.trueachievements.com/Far-Cry-3-Blood-Dragon/....htm, it makes sense for Ubisoft to go back to the well for another taste of that sweet, sweet XBLA goodness. Next week, Techland will be taking center stage with their Call of Juarez title, http://www.trueachievements.com/Call-of-Juarez-Gunsling....htm. The game (at first glance) appears to have a lot in common with it's predecessors, http://www.trueachievements.com/Call-of-Juarez/achievem....htm and http://www.trueachievements.com/Call-of-Juarez-Bound-in....htm as well as Rockstar's smash hit, http://www.trueachievements.com/Red-Dead-Redemption/ach....htm. While we won't know if Techland and Ubisoft's latest venture can hold up to its lineage, we can take a look at the achievements that are laid out before us like a long ride into the sunset in this week's Achievement Preview Spotlight.

Kicking things off with the basics, Gunslinger is another 400G Arcade title, meaning you'll get some decent bang for your 1200 MSP. A respectable seven of the twenty-six achievements are hidden behind the "Secret" barrier, and there appear to be three achievements tied to beating the game on different difficulty levels: one for "any" level, one for "Hard", and one for "True West". The rest of the achievements are prime for examination.

Making its return to the Call of Juarez franchise, Gunslinger brings back "Concentration" mode. The "Concentration" skill slows down time, allowing Silas to pick off enemies and other objects with (ahem) "dead eye" accuracy. As such, some of the achievements are tied to this mechanic, starting with this explosive pop.

Without experiencing the game hands-on, it's tough to say how frequently one might encounter the opportunity to bag this achievement, so be sure to keep your eyes open.

Gunslinger has also brought back Duel mode which will test your quickdraw skills. That being said, this next achievement could present quite the challenge.

I'm not sure if you are all aware of how fast 0.6 seconds is, so this may provide some perspective:

The human eye takes between 0.3 and 0.4 seconds to blink... so have fun!

Like most games of this generation, we've got collectibles.

Not much really needs to be said about collectibles at this point, but in addition to this one, there is also an achievement for finding all of the "Nuggets of Truth" in the game. Just remember to tip your walkthrough writers.

The sheer gonzo nature of this next achievement earns it a place on the list.

Not only will you be tasked with winning the duel, but you've got to nail a bird, too!? Good luck with that, cowboy!

For the real ratio-lovers, picking out the Moby Dick in Gunslinger is a bit of a challenge. While some of the previously-mentioned achievements are certain to have a good degree of difficulty, this one will require a bit of a grind, and thus is earning the top spot.

Once again, the ratio on this achievement probably depends on how much "Concentration" time you'll be allotted per use, but even if it's a liberal fifteen seconds, you're going to be grinding this achievement for a bit.

"Quality Time" aside, there are a few other big achievements that will most likely net you some hefty TA score: Turkey Shoot (Reach combo level of 20), Legend Among Legends (Get all Arcade Mode stars), and For a Few Skills More (Unlock all skills in Story Mode)

As we draw closer to the end of this generation, some developers are really beginning to shine when it comes to achievement design. While Call of Juarez: Gunslinger may not be the shiniest penny in the bunch, Techland certainly has done achievement lovers quite a few favors with some innovative challenges mixed with steady classics.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is set for a May 22nd release on the Xbox LIVE Arcade and will cost you 1200 MSP.

If there's an upcoming game or DLC pack that you'd like to see featured in the Achievement Preview Spotlight, be sure to let us know in the comments!
