Some Online Passes for Older EA Titles Now Free

By litepink,
Update for clarification: All online passes will be eliminated for existing games. The list below denotes the online passes that are now free on the marketplace, and doesn’t include other games that were changed in-game or through EA servers.

Electronic Arts made some shocking news back in April when they announced that they would ending their controversial online pass program. There was no indication that previously released titles would be affected by the new approach, until today that is. A flood of EA titles with online passes had their prices slashed altogether, being made available to all at no cost. Below is the list of content that is now free:

Medal of Honor - Online Pass
Bulletstorm - Online Pass
Need for Speed: SHIFT 2: Unleashed - Online Pass
Dragon Age II - The Black Emporium
Alice: Madness Returns - American McGee’s Alice
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Online Pass
Dragon Age: Origins - The Stone Prisoner
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - V.I.P.
Skate 3 - Skate Share Pack
Mass Effect 2 - Cerberus Network

While some of this content is purely an ‘online pass’ by definition, much of it also contains actual in-game perks, items, and even story content. Some of these games were a part of EA’s Project Ten Dollar program, which was a precursor to the online pass but functioned in a similar way. What’s most relevant to our community is that the online pass was a deterrent to obtaining achievements in many cases if you purchased the game secondhand and weren’t willing to purchase the additional content.

EA has told Game Informer that this is just the initial wave of online pass removals. In the coming weeks we’ll see more games added to the list, while other titles may receive an update or hot fix to remove them. EA confirmed that they would be removing the online pass from all their previously released titles.
