Microsoft is bringing their flagship franchise to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 with Halo: Spartan Assault
from 343 Industries and Vanguard games.Halo: Spartan Assault
is a top-down shooter that bridges together the events between Halo 3
and Halo 4
, following the exploits of Commander Sarah Palmer and Spartan Davis aboard the UNSC Infinity. The game explores the first Spartan Ops missions and the backstory behind the Human-Covenant wars.
Some key features will differentiate this Halo
game from the rest. While the game doesn't feature deathmatch type modes, you can compete with friends through leaderboards and weekly challenges. As you may have noticed, a running score tally is present on your HUD, indicating that Halo: Spartan Assault
will have a more of an arcade feel to it. Microsoft promises "intuitive controls" on touch screen devices, but there is optional keyboard and mouse controls on tablets and PC.

A visit to the Halo
universe has been a frequent request among mobile gamers, and now finally they will get their wish. Now that it's a reality though, the question is whether or not Microsoft and the development teams can deliver on all fronts. If things go well this could give much needed momentum to the Windows brand, especially the mobile division. We'll find out soon if Microsoft has crafted magic for your fingertips as Halo: Spartan Assault
arrives in July.
