Valve Cancels Portal 2 E3 Event, Plans Surprise

By zigs00, 8 years ago
Mixed news, I'd say. Valve sent out a press email yesterday announcing that their scheduled Portal 2 event a mere fortnight away at E3 has been cancelled, which is a real shame for those of us waiting in anticipation and child-like excitement for any sort of information about the inevitably amazing game.

But on the flip side, Valve have said that they are planning a big surprise instead. Wearing my speculation hat, I'd say/hope that there's a chance we'll finally get some more details about a certain third episode of Valve's flagship franchise. Maybe. Well, maybe not. Please...?

In typical Valve fashion, even the announcement of the Portal 2 event cancellation is witty and amusing, and definitely worth a read. Good job I've quoted it below for you!

Subject: A note from Aperture Science

Dear Subject Name Here,

Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.

If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.

Thank you for --RECORD SCRATCH!!!--

PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.
Even if we still have to wait another three years for it, I'm really hoping that Valve whets our insatiable appetites, eager to finish the Half-Life 2 saga in some way at E3 - which, in case you were unaware is scheduled for June 15th-17th.

But what else could it be? A new Counter-Strike or Team Fortress game? Big Left 4 Dead news? What is happening with the second Left 4 Dead DLC pack? Is there a brand new game/franchise on Valve's horizon? Sound off below, speculators!
