At E3 today, Shinji Hashimoto, the Final Fantasy
Brand Director for Square-Enix, sat down with reporters for a question and answer session about Final Fantasy XV
and KINGDOM HEARTS III
Asked if FFXV, which has been in development for at least six years now, would have multiple parts, Hashimoto responded that the story was so big that other games were possible, but they aren't far enough into development to decide. Several questions came up about FFXV being the first Final Fantasy
to drop the turn-based battle system entirely. Will real-time action be the model for the future? Hashimoto emphasized more than once that the action system was chosen for FFXV because it best suits this
game; he sees a future for both action-based and command-based (turn-based) games in the future. Interestingly, he mentioned that the decision has not been made for the new game they're working on, so apparently, the next FF has already begun development. He said that Final Fantasy
is always evolving, so the new battle system is a positive change.Kingdom Hearts III
received much less attention. The same development team that created Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMix
for the PS3 and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
for the PSP will be developing KHIII. Asked if some of the franchise's mythos and history were being worked into the game for those new to the franchise, especially Xbox gamers, Hashimoto said that there were no plans for that at this time because there was plenty of information via movies and books available.
In the second half of the session, very little else was revealed. Clarification, however, was made that "Agni's Philosophy" was created as a tech demo for the Luminous Engine on which FFXV runs; no such game is in development. Hashimoto declined to answer several questions through the session.
Please keep in mind that the host of the above videos is experiencing a great deal of traffic this week. For me, the first video ran with difficulty (buffering doubled the amount of time needed) while the second video wouldn't run at all until I downloaded it.
Square-Enix has not yet announced release dates for Final Fantasy XV
or Kingdom Hearts III
