The TA Top Five - Faithful Companions

By Marc Hollinshead, 3 years ago
Video games bring forth some amazing characters. As the story unfolds, so do those people’s personalities. The connection a player has to the main character in a game can potentially mean make or break for it, so who would they be if they didn’t have a trusty companion to accompany them on their adventure?

After a hefty amount of discussion and verbal dueling in the TA office, we have come up with a Top Five list of loyal companions who you just can’t afford to miss spending time with.

5 – Dominic Santiago – Gears of War
Dom

You could be neck deep in a horde of Locust, with Reavers tormenting you on all sides, and still be certain that this guy has got your back. Throughout the entire Gears of War trilogy, Dom was Marcus Fenix’s brother in arms, and he was always there for him when no one else was. This platonic relationship got them through an abundance of dire situations, despite the odd scar here and there, and so makes for a fantastic gun-wielding companion. I’d certainly want a friend like that watching my back.

4 – Elizabeth – BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360)
29.3.13

“Bring us the girl and wipe away the debt.” At the beginning of BioShock Infinite, that’s all Elizabeth was; a girl. However, as the game progresses, both Booker and players realise just how special Elizabeth really is. We see an extremely intelligent young woman with incredible power, as well as a life full of isolation and a need for exploration. Her emotional scars certainly don’t stop her from being an immensely helpful companion either. She can hold her own just as much as she aids Booker in his mission. If I could spend just ten minutes with this girl, I’d call myself lucky.

3 – Tali’Zorah – Mass Effect
Tali

When a character that has no recognisable face provides this much emotion, hilarity, and heartbreak, then surely they’re worth a bit of your time? Tali gave players a character in the Mass Effect universe with those exact traits and a never-give-up attitude. She was always there for Shepard (in more ways than one), and throughout the trilogy, used her exceptional tech abilities to help get through the heat of battle. Her somewhat puppy dog-like personality was almost infectious! Whether it’s for comic relief, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to cry on YOUR shoulder, Tali’s your gal...or should I say, quarian.

2 – Alistair – Dragon Age: Origins
Alistair

I think it’s safe to say that nearly every girl that has played this game (my friend included) fell in love with this man. Alistair’s whimsical personality provided comedy aplenty as players ventured through the world of Ferelden. His extremely-likable persona meant that he was in my party practically all the time and I’m sure others would say the same. With sword and shield at the ready, Alistair would always be prepared to defend the Grey Warden against the evil and tainted Darkspawn. It certainly wouldn’t be a boring (or even quiet) experience with this fellow keeping you company.

1 – Garrus Vakarian – Mass Effect
Garrus

Friend, lover, professional calibrator; Garrus was all of these things and more as a valued member of Shepard’s crew in the Mass Effect universe. He’s one of the few who has been through it all with the commander, so you know that you’ve got yourself a loyal companion. If you want expert help shooting the place up, Garrus is your ma-...turian, or even if you’re desperate for some awkward conversation about popping heat-sinks, then he’s your go-to guy, although, if you try to catch him in the middle of calibrating something, then you’ve got no chance. Remember, there’s no Shepard without Vakarian.

There were some fearsome battles to determine who would make this list. As an honourable mention for someone, or rather someTHING that didn’t make the cut, I’d like to give a shout out to the Weighted Companion Cube. The lovable inanimate object of the Portal series captured many gamer's hearts around the world, and gave players the motivation to keep solving those puzzles. Despite its lifeless nature, it somehow fought valiantly, so we salute you!

Now that you’ve seen our favourites, who would YOU love to have as your adventure-buddy?

The TA Team will be bringing you The TA Top Five every Sunday until we run out of coolness to debate and discuss. If you have an idea for a Top Five you'd like us to do, be sure to let us know in the comments!

To summarize Marc in two words, it would be "Christian Gamer." You will usually find him getting stuck into story heavy action-adventure games, RPG's and the odd quirky title when he isn't raving about Dark Souls and Mass Effect. Outside the world of gaming, Marc attends and helps out in his church on a regular basis and has a not-so thrilling job in a supermarket.
