Last week, Microsoft announced that the Games for Windows Live Marketplace will be closing on August 22nd
, meaning that no games or DLC can be purchased from the service past that date. Now, thanks to an accidentally posted announcement on the support page for Age of Empires Online (PC)
, it seems that the whole GFWL service isn't long for this world either:
Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.
What does this mean? At the moment that's uncertain, but it likely means that purchased games and DLC will become unavailable to download and all achievements in games that use the service will become discontinued on that date. In addition to this, unless patched, games that use GFWL may also become unplayable. As such, it may be a pretty good idea to try and get any achievements you want in GFWL games before July 1st of next year.
