MGS V: Ground Zeroes Launches Spring

By Rebecca Smith, 6 years ago
We had long suspected that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and were going to be released separately, but conflicting statements from the developer and publisher meant that nothing was certain. This has now changed. Ground Zeroes will be released as a separate retail release before The Phantom Pain.

As we already knew, Ground Zeroes is a prologue to The Phantom Pain that sees players take on a rescue mission to infiltrate a Cuban prison camp. Not only will this set events in motion for the plotline of The Phantom Pain, it will also bridge the gap between the existing titles and the fifth "full Metal Gear Solid epic".

Ground Zeroes also serves the purpose of introducing players to the new gameplay mechanics created by the more advanced FOX Engine, such as the large open environment or the effects of weather and time of day on the game's missions. Hideo Kojima stated:

The advanced capabilities of the FOX Engine have allowed me to tell the new story in a new way. There will be a significant difference in what METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN brings to the series, so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential. As such, METAL GEAR SOLID: GROUND ZEROES has been designed to introduce key elements, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game will offer.
Here are a handful of new screenshots taken from the title.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is due to be released for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One in Spring 2014, both at retail and digitally. The Xbox 360 retail version and the Xbox One digital version is priced at £29.99 or local currency equivalent. The Xbox 360 digital version is priced at £19.99. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is yet to receive a release date.
