TA Gaming Stats - November 18th to 24th 2013

By Chewie, 5 years ago
This report is for the period November 18th to November 24th 2013.

Apologies that this is a little later than usual. I wanted to make sure the stats for the One launch week actually included One stats, so I had the Gremlins hard at work trying to crowbar them in. That's right: Gremlins. It turns out my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, are about as useless at making changes to the existing formula as a protocol droid is at acting tough, so I had to get in some outside cross-franchise cross-platform help. We've got One Games Started and One Games Completed for you, but haven't managed to get One Achievements Won working yet (bloomin challenges).

Games Started
33,589 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 71,772 games between them (1,905 different games).

Out of all the launch titles available for the One, there are two that manage to stick their necks up above the others and both are sequels to established franchises. In first place, with almost 4,000 starters, is zombie-slaying threequel Dead Rising 3. It is followed in second by Forza Motorsport 5, which racks up over 3,500 starters.

In third is the most popular original IP, Ryse: Son of Rome, with 2,500 starters, despite some rather lacklustre reviews. Personally, I love the idea of stabbing people in the face whilst wearing a toga.

Interestingly, although it is Call of Duty: Ghosts that beats Battlefield 4 by a long way on the 360 in terms of number of starters (currently 23,000 compared 12,000), on the new system Battlefield 4 (Xbox One) manages to take the edge over Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One), with 2,400 starters in fourth compared to just over 2,000 in fifth.

In sixth we see the second new IP and first digital only title, Killer Instinct, which stand only slightly behind CoD with just under 2,000 starters. Just behind that in seventh, with only around 50 fewer starters, is popular footie title FIFA 14 (Xbox One).

In eighth, with over 1,300, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox One) shows there were a fair number of people holding out to play the latest in the series on the next gen.

With quite a significant drop in numbers, Need for Speed Rivals (Xbox One) pulls into ninth with a little over 500 starters.

Finally, in tenth is the free exercise title Xbox Fitness, which manages to lift 400 starters off their couches.

With so many people diddling on their brand new Ones, it's no surprise that the 360 numbers took a bit of a hit, although they mostly stay steady, with only one title passing the 1,000 starters mark.

Call of Duty: Ghosts loses nearly half its numbers in first place to almost 1,800 and Battlefield 4 slips under Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag to third place.

On the new release front, Need for Speed Rivals takes a measly 500 starter; although it's slightly more than its One counterpart. In ninth place, Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because IDK slips in with nearly 300 starters.

Thanks to a themed Deal of the Week, which included the base game and all DLC, Dishonored sneaks into the middle of the table with nearly 600 starters.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Games Started

"Games with Gold" freebie, Double Fine's walking tank strategy title Iron Brigade, over doubles its starters from 2,600 to over 5,800 in first place.

I'm not entirely certain why recent free-to-play title Ascend: Hand of Kul has jumped up from sixth to second with an increase in starters from 160 to over 700, but I'm presuming it has something to do with the bug fixes and new content in a recent Title Update.

The only new release is a blast from the past, SoulCalibur II HD Online, slashing over 350 starters in fourth place.

It's always sad when we see games delisted. It's especially sad when they get delisted without any warning. It's slightly less sad (and very uncommon) when they get delisted with some sort of warning. It's definitely not sad when they bring the games back. It's super sad when they get delisted again. Such is the turbulent story of cross-platform strategy title Galactic Reign (WP). Released this March, the game was announced as being delisted in August. Then, last week, we discovered that the game was back on the marketplace temporarily before disappearing again. Hence its return to the table in first place, with over 400 TA'ers jumping on it before it slipped away again.

Recent free-to-play release Kingdoms & Lords (WP) continues to maintain a high place in second, despite losing 500 starters. This week's Deal of the Week, Farm Frenzy 2 (WP), surprisingly doesn't do as well as the previous week's deal title, Flight Control Rocket (WP), with the former taking a little over 100 starters in fourth compared to the latter's almost 120 in third.

Games Completed
12,124 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 14,826 games between them (1,221 different games).

Unless one of the launch titles was super duper easy (no we aren't counting Xbox One), it was going to be unlikely to see many titles in One Games Completed within the first couple of days of release. Regardless, we still get 12 dedicated players blasting through LocoCycle (Xbox One) (despite the game not appearing on Games Started). The first to finish the title was the Newshounds' very own litepink. Four other games were completed in these first few days by five TA'ers: Madden NFL 25 (Xbox One), Skylanders SWAP Force (Xbox One), Dead Rising 3 and CoD: Ghosts. If you were one of those few, I am impressed. Unless, of course, you cheated.

Top Xbox One Games Completed

BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360) continues to grab completions thanks to the "Burial at Sea" DLC, although it sinks down from first to fifth place. CoD: Ghosts takes the top spot in its place with over 220 completions.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Games Completed

The top three on Arcade Games Completed remains unchanged again after multiple weeks with The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us and A World of Keflings continuing to dominate.

Although it didn't make the Games Started table on its release last week, stylish platformer Contrast manages to take the fifth place in this week's completed table with almost 70 completions. Currently almost 46% of players have finished the title, so it's definitely an easy one.

The newly ported Soul Caliber sequel also appears in its release week in ninth with over 40 completions.

Hoping to finish up the game before the imminent server closures, 50 players managed to wrap up Galactic Reign in first place.

Achievements Won
72,169 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 877,708 achievements online between them (50,827 different achievements).

After last week's single achievement invasion from Bioshock Infinite, the table resumes to its previous Ghosts-filled state. All but one of these are story progression achievements, including The Ghost Killer in second place for completing the campaign. That single non-story achievement? Deep Freeze for dropping 8 vehicles into ice holes. Not as fun as dropping Statisticles into ice holes, I can tell you.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Now that A World of Keflings has dropped down in numbers and Iron Brigade has firmly taken hold, the latter easily fills up the table. Three of these -- European Entourage, Bandolier of Brothers and African Allies -- are for playing the game online with others. I wish I could join you guys online with my own mobile trench, but I'm having too much fun playing Squash the Statisticles with it.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

The three easiest Galactic Reign achievements take the top spots over a selection of achievements from Kingdoms & Lords.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

With a few of the One launch titles being in the Action-Adventure category, including the top one, Dead Rising 3, that genre manages to claim the top spot back from Shooter, which slips into second place and drops from over 8 million to under 7 million. With the likes of Ryse in Action and Xbox Fitness in Sports, both genres jump up the table into third and fourth. This is partly thanks to Role-Playing having a total of zero One titles representing it.

That's all for this week. Join us next week as the One games continue to take hold and we will hopefully have a few more Stats goodies to share with you. In the meantime, I'm going to feed the Gremlins for all their hard work. I just hope they don't mind it being a midnight snack.
