Let's Talk with PHXSuns1Fan

By Cindy Minguez, 3 years ago
Hi, TA'ers! This week, our special guest is PhxSuns1Fan, a gaming enthusiast and family man.

B1ue: Hi, PhxSuns1Fan! Thanks for talking to me today.

PSFan:
Sure thing, B1ue. Thanks for having me!

B1ue: Gamertags almost always tell something about their owners. Tell us about yours.

PSFan:
My gamertag actually tells everything about me. I was born a Phoenix Suns fan. I remember watching games on a small black and white TV in my parents' room when I was a kid. I am wearing Phoenix Suns jerseys in most of my class photos while growing up. I bleed orange.

B1ue: I notice a lot of music games in your trophy case. Are they favorites of yours?

PSFan:
I truly do love my music games. I could play them all day long If I could. There is actually a funny story to my music games. When I first met my wife, she brought over Guitar Hero II for us to play. I was the worst player ever. I couldn’t even pass a song on easy. I borrowed the game, and I stayed up all night playing it. She came back over the next night and just looked at me and said, "Have you even moved in the last 24 hours?" So, honestly, my wife is to blame for me being addicted to music games. She caused me to be addicted to achievements, as well, because before all I had was https://www.trueachievements.com/Moto-GP-07/achievements.htm, Madden NFL 08, and NBA LIVE 08. After that night, I was determined to get all the achievements in that game, hence the never-ending struggle began. It is hard to say that they are my favorite though, being such a huge sports fan. If I had to choose though, my favorite genre would be racing; I just love it!!!

B1ue: How long have you been gaming?

PSFan:
I have been gaming for as long as I can remember. I would sit in my sister's room and play the first generation Gameboy all the time. Tetris was so addicting! We got NES for Christmas and played the crap out of Duck Hunt and Mario Bros. Following that was N64, and that is when the world changed; between James Bond 007 Golden Eye and Mario Kart, I logged a good chunk of my life.

B1ue: Do others in your family game?

PSFan:
My little brother used to play with me all the time when we were little. But he went to the dark side (Playstation), and we couldn’t game anymore. My wife has her assortment of games for the 360, but since we just got the Xbox One, she has been playing Ryse: Son of Rome. My son is growing into a gamer. We first got him his own Xbox when he was three years old. We got it more for the Kinect games, but he is playing all kinds of games now. He just turned five last month and almost has 5k gamer score. It is the cutest thing when he gets an achievement because he pauses and does a little arm pump while saying, "I got an Achievement! Yea!" I can honestly say that one of the coolest things I have watched is when I let him play Halo 4 with me online one day because he had been previously watching me play it all the time. When he got his first kill, he was doing the shameful spray n’ pray, but he won the one-on-one battle. I even recorded it for him, so when he is older, he can watch it. He is also a huge fan of the Lego series and Disney Infinity. Given his choice, he will always request to play Halo though.

B1ue: What do your friends and loved ones have to say about your gaming?

PSFan:
My wife is really great about it. I just usually tell her that I have a session the day before, and there is no issue because she has her own hobbies and interests that don't involve me. Regardless it’s all her fault that I am the way I am about achievements anyways. My friends play games as well, so they totally understand.

B1ue: Assuming you’re not a professional gamer, what’s your day job?

PSFan:
I work for a small business as the Shipping and Receiving Manager. We sell large printers, paper, and inks for Epson, HP, Canon and Mutoh. The group of people I work with are a tight group and know how to have fun. The only down side of my job is the travel to and from work every day. I drive 75 miles a day, and it can vary from a 45-minute drive to an hour and thirty minutes, depending on traffic. That’s going both directions, so I spend two hours driving a day. I lose out on family time and gaming.

B1ue: What other hobbies do you enjoy?

PSFan:
Other than video games, I also enjoy playing basketball, hiking, and camping. I used to collect basketball cards, could easily have over 50k. I have put that hobby on hold though until my son is a little older, so we can do it together. I am also a huge movie buff. At one time we owned over 1300 movies!

B1ue: Wow! That's a bunch of movies!

Tell us a little more about your home life.

PSFan:
My wife is an amazing woman. I can honestly say I found my soul mate, six years strong and counting. My family and I are estranged, so the only parents I have are my wife's side. I have much respect for them and have a great relationship with them. As I stated before, I have a five-year old son named Nash, yes, after the NBA player. Both my wife and I agreed that if it was a boy, I got to name him and if it was a girl, she got to. So I picked Nash, being that my name is Steven; when you put us together, we are Steve Nash. My son is my everything, and I do anything I can for the kid, I spoil the crap out of him, too. He makes me smile everyday from banging his head to Five Finger Death Punch with me in the car or from just being himself. As for furry children, I married a Rescue Girl. I had one cat all to myself when we first met. She had one dog and three cats. When we moved into a house, we got a puppy for Nash and two more cats, so we have a little farm.

B1ue: Of what real life achievement are you most proud? Would you give us some details?

PSFan:
Well, I am an Army boy. I joined backed in 2004 after my childhood friend/brother came back and told me all of his stories. So I decided to join. It was the greatest thing I did for myself! It made me into the man I am today. I was a know-it-all punk before the Drill Instructors got their hands on me. I was all done with my training and schooling when I was bitten by a brown recluse spider and nearly lost my right leg. The poison ate 30% of my thigh muscle and messed my knee up really badly. Needless to say, I needed rehab, and after all was said and done, I wasn’t the same soldier anymore. It was taking me too long to recover, so they dismissed me from service after six months of rehab. It took me about two years to get to where I am today. I can’t run as fast or jump as high as I used to though. I would say if I had one highest ratio achievement, it would be back on 11/10/08, the day my son was born! The first time I held him, I just had an emotional breakdown. I always saw myself being a father, but now it was real and I was holding this tiny life in my hands!
7

B1ue: There's just nothing else like holding your baby for the first time, is there? I'm really sorry abut your leg. It's scary how something so small can cause so much damage.

What part of the world do you live in? If I were to visit, what sights would I have to see?

PSFan:
I live in San Tan Valley, Arizona, about 50 miles outside of Phoenix. It is Hell!!!! For about 8-9 months a year, it is above 80 degrees; during the summer, we average 110!!!! The winters drop below freezing but since it doesn't rain, we don’t get snow. We do have one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon. We also have Sedona, which is just amazing - mountain ranges and rock slides. But Arizona is known for its sunsets; they are really pretty sometimes.

What’s your favorite game of all time on any console? What makes it special?

PSFan: Tokyo Xtreme Racer on the Playstation/Dreamcast. I spent a lot of hours as a teenager playing this game. I also grew up with the Street Racing craze, so when I started my own crew, I called us the 13 Devils; they are the main crew in the game (boss if you will). Everyone asked my why 13 Devils or where the other 13 members were. There were only five of us.

B1ue: Do you remember the first game you played? What’s your fondest memory of it?

PSFan:
I do, it was Tetris on the Gameboy; my parents must have bought many AA battery for us kids. I remember when I finally got past level 99 and the speed didn’t increase, I was so sad and upset. I remember saying, "What is the purpose of continuing to play? "Then I learned the battle was to see who can get the highest level.

B1ue: If some evil spell allowed you to own only a single game for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?

PSFan:
Halo 4, there is something about this game. I can’t explain it; the graphics and the game play are just amazing. Online is so much fun!!! For a good 4-5 months, I played nothing but this game.

B1ue: Any games you regret putting on your gamertag?

PSFan:
I honestly don’t have any regrets because I’ve never really worried about completing everything. I have a lot of games on my tag that are not completed due to the closures of servers (thanks, EA). Sports games are the worst! But the one I am most upset about is Hellboy: The Science of Evil. the full 1000 is based on the release of the DLC, based off the third movie, which they never made!

B1ue: If you were forced to change your gamertag, what would you change it to? What does the new tag reflect about you?

PSFan:
FFDPintheFace, which is my dummy account. It’s my favorite band! My driving music.

B1ue: Tell us about your gamer pic. Why did you choose that one?

PSFan:
My gamer pic just shows the skills I have on the court. I wanted to show that I am a true Suns fan and don’t want anyone to think otherwise.

B1ue: Do you have any particular gaming pet peeves?

PSFan:
I am super OCD! Everything has to be clean and organized. I also rag smash A button when I die on Halo to return to the battlefield.

B1ue: What upcoming game are you most looking forward to?

PSFan:
Halo 5 and Destiny -- both of the graphics look amazing!

B1ue: What game are you most proud of completing? Why?

PSFan:
Rock Band 3 or SEGA Rally Revo for retail games. Regarding arcade, it would beHexic HD or Boom Boom Rocket. Rock Band 3 was the gem of the group because of the Queen achievement; I had to sing Freddy versus myself! The man is a vocal god; I could only image where music would be if he was still alive. My most recent game NBA 2K14 is a special game to me, as well. I logged over 200+ hours doing everything legit! No editing or roster boosting.
5

B1ue: If you found yourself dropped into a video game, which video game character would you most want to have your back?

PSFan:
Master Chief hands down! Dude is a beast, and I’ll have to borrow that energy sword sometime!

B1ue: In the same scenario, what character/creature would you least like to see headed your way?

PSFan:
Bowser! Took me ten years to beat the jerk.

B1ue: Any characters you would like to see thrown into video game hell?

PSFan:
The Angry Birds cast, those damn birds are so addicting, and they just keep making new games. So if they go to hell? Maybe they won’t make anymore.

B1ue: Ever had any bad experiences online? How did you handle it?

PSFan
: Oh, gosh, if you ever play Halo online, you’ll have a bad experience with every map it seems. Between lag or hacks, you’ll always find them. But the worst one is DiRT 3. I was determined to do the online legit and do no sessions. But the drivers had to cheat to win; dirty driving is so low, and I can’t take it!

B1ue: Do you prefer single player or multi-player?

PSFan:
Single player. I don’t have to worry about servers or other people not doing what they are supposed to.

B1ue: Do you have a favorite group of friends you like to play with? If so, how did you meet?

PSFan:
I do have a few select gamers that I play with on occasion. Most of them came from TA, but one I found randomly online playing Need for Speed: Carbon. I've been friends with him since before TA.

B1ue: If you could have a multi-player session with anyone in the world, whom would you choose? Why?

PSFan:
Steve Nash playing Fifa. I heard he was really good at it, and since I have never met him in person, that would make it all worth it!

B1ue: What other consoles do you own? What are your favorites on those platforms?

PSFan:
At one time, we owned NES, SNES, N64, PS2, but we sold all of them about three years ago to improve our 360 games and book collection. We traded them in at a book store; we got $1700 in-store credit, so we did a lot of improving!

B1ue: Have you ever had a game you really looked forward to that you were disappointed in when it finally arrived? Tell us about it.

PSFan:
Rock Band Blitz. I was really upset that it was a controller-based game and it was single player only!

B1ue: Tell us about your gaming set-up.

PSFan:
I have a 50” Vizio 1080p with two Xbox 360 320gb, an Xbox One, and 7.1 Digital Surround sound. My son has his own little set up in the same room, 19” flat screen with one Xbox 360 320gb. I also use this TV to watch sports while gaming or boosting .

B1ue: Is there anything in particular you want the TA community to know about you?

PSFan:
Yes, don’t migrate your MSA EVER!!!!! I switched my MSA back in July, and it cause me five months of hell. I couldn’t buy, download, or do anything. At one time, I couldn’t even earn gamerscore. But after many hours of back and forth with Xbox Support, they fixed it and gave me a very generous gift - an Xbox One Day one, I was so excited because I couldn't afford one at the moment, and they just wanted to apologize. I love the machine, and it won my wife’s love back to Xbox.

B1ue: Is there anything I haven’t asked that you want to talk about?

No, I just wanted to say thank you so much for giving me/us this opportunity to let the public into our home.
