TA Top Five: Quotes

By Marc Hollinshead, 2 years ago
Movies are packed FULL of quotes that we love to repeat to one another. I'm sure that some of us could even quote an entire film, line for line, if we tried hard enough. From "I'll be back" to "Here's Johnny!", everyone knows at least a couple of classic cinema quotes. It's in our nature to remember particular lines from things that stand out to us, whether it's the hilarity of the comment, or its significance. If you comment on this article, write down your own personal favourite film quote. Go on, I dare ya!

All gamers everywhere know just as well that video games are full to the brim with funny, dramatic, and emotional quotes that are forever locked within our brains. With famous lines such as "FINISH HIM!" and "It's-a-me! Mario!" making their mark in the gaming world, the generation of the Xbox 360 has also shared many renowned phrases that will go down in gaming history. While there are an absolute ton of great quotes out there, we have picked a small number of lines which will be remembered by gamers for years to come. Even the honorable mentions are getting a good deal of attention this week!

Honorable Mentions

C-c-c-c-Combo Breaker! - Killer Instinct
While Killer Instinct has been around for a long time, the re-imagining of it on Xbox One has given it the excuse to sneak in. The over-the-top way in which lines such as this and "Ultra Comboooo!" are exclaimed as the player pulls off outrageous combos have made gamers across the globe feel like a complete badass for many years.

Praise The Sun! - Dark Souls
On your travels through Lordran, you will realise that Dark Souls is a game full of misery and hopelessness. However, whenever you see this particular phrase as a message created by other players on the ground, it usually acts as a triumphant shout of joy from making it to the other side of a dangerous location. Either that, or you've found a safe haven and can actually see the sun itself shining onto the bleak world. Here's hoping that we'll continue to praise the sun in Dark Souls II.

I used to be an adventurer like you... - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
And then I got bored? No, that's not right...but do I really need to reveal the other half of this quote? This rather insignificant line from Bethesda's sprawling RPG became a gigantic source of hilarity across the internet and became one of the biggest gaming memes of recent years. Even T-shirts of the quote have been spotted in high street shops by yours truly. However, as quickly as the line rose to fame, it soon faded away into the internet's archives.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity? - Far Cry 3
Insanity and the fear of losing yourself is one of the overarching themes of Far Cry 3. The game's antagonist, Vaas, is constantly plaguing the player with this question as he explains his own meaning of the word. It's pretty ironic that while he ponders the question, all he needs to do is look in the mirror for an accurate definition of the concept.

Top Five

5. I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite store on the Citadel. - Mass Effect 2
Quote Top Five Mass Effect 2

When spending your hard earned credits on the Citadel high street, you may get the chance to get a discount if you're kind enough to the shop owner. As you engage in conversation, choosing the paragon option will give Shepard the chance to record this quote for the owner in an obvious attempt to boost sales (and give you a cheeky discount). Who WOULDN'T want the hero of the Citadel to say their store was amazing? This particular line of the Mass Effect series also became a source of internet fun as people used it in different ways to express their love for the commander. "I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite video on Youtube" is one such example. If I was Shepard, I'd definitely have to say that TrueAchievements was my favourite website on the internet.

4. Stop Right There, Criminal Scum! - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Quote Top Five Oblivion

Anyone who has played Oblivion will know that pure hatred is what we feel towards the guards of Cyrodiil. The smallest of crimes that the player carries out wherever they are somehow manage to always attract these vultures into an almost never ending chase across Tamriel. The second they sense that something is wrong, they will be on you faster than Glarthir's insane suspicions. Whether it's murdering someone in pure daylight, or simply taking a piece of cheese from a shop, this quote will make you feel like the lowest of the degenerates. The last thing you want in your epic journey is to see the camera pan round to their zoomed-in mugs and have literally no way of escape.

3. Requiescat In Pace. - Assassin's Creed II - Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Quote Top Five AC

A very simple quote, but it is the significance and impact of the line which gives it a place on this list. Throughout the instalments of the Assassin's Creed series where Ezio is the star of the show, the Italian assassin will utter these words whenever he kills his next target. Meaning "Rest In Peace" in his native language, the line became a staple for the three games and players expected Ezio to speak these words whenever they took down another foe. As Ezio was a kind and justice-driven person, these words fit him perfectly. If nothing else, we got (very) slightly educated in Italian while playing games!

2. Would You Kindly...? - BioShock (Xbox 360)
Quote Top Five Bioshock

Fans of the original game will know just how significant this quote is. The way in which the line was incorporated into the game was so clever that you wonder how the developers thought up such an ingenious idea. You know, when...

Will there ever be a quote as significant as this in future games? Only time will tell. So, what could beat a quote of this calibre, you ask? Well...

1. The Cake Is A Lie. - Portal
Quote Top Five Portal

Before I even set foot into Aperture Science, I had heard this quote. The immediate curiosity of what it meant and why there was no cake was one of the reasons that led me to finding out for myself. GLaDOS, the masochistic AI who took control of the facility, promises Chell that she would get a lovely slice of sugary cake if she makes it to the end of all of the test chambers in the first game. However, as you meander through the turret-filled corridors, scribbles from the infamous Rat Man are found. Occasionally, you will see "The cake is a lie" hand-written across the wall, and this acts as a warning for Chell. If you make it to the end of the whole game, it turns out...

Cake was sadly pushed to the sidelines in the sequel, but it still won over many fans.

There you have it. Drama, comedy, and internet memes all in one list. As more games get released into the world, more quotes get remembered. There's a lot of awesome one liners that aren't in this particular list, but that doesn't make them any less amazing. What is the gaming quote that stands out to you the most? Don't forget that movie quote I mentioned at the beginning!

The TA Team will be bringing you The TA Top Five every Sunday until we run out of coolness to debate and discuss. If you have an idea for a Top Five you'd like us to do, be sure to let us know in the comments!

To summarize Marc in two words, it would be "Christian Gamer." You will usually find him getting stuck into story heavy action-adventure games, RPG's and the odd quirky title when he isn't raving about Dark Souls and Mass Effect. Outside the world of gaming, Marc attends and helps out in his church on a regular basis and has a not-so thrilling job in a supermarket.
