Double Helix Games Joins Amazon

Killer Instinct is on its way towards finding a third developer to carry on the game's legacy. While the original Killer Instinct was developed by Rare and was released in arcades, SNES and GameBoy, the recent Xbox One reboot was developed by Double Helix. The game now needs a third developer after Double Helix was purchased by Amazon.

The purchase involved both the studio and its IPs according to TechCrunch. The studio's imminent release, Strider, on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One this month is not affected. Amazon has confirmed that the studio will continue to support their current line-up of games.

The rights to the Killer Instinct franchise were not included in the purchase as these belong to Microsoft. As such, a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon they will be getting a new development partner for the game with details to follow shortly:

We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Double Helix and wish them success in their next endeavor. We want all of our loyal fans to know that the Killer Instinct team at Microsoft is not changing and that the franchise will remain with Microsoft Studios. We remain dedicated to delivering a great experience and plan to announce our new development partner soon. We're excited about the future of this popular franchise.
The release of the Fulgore character DLC for Killer Instinct next month is also thought to be unaffected, but we will let you know when we have more concrete information for you.
