There was a great debate around the Newshound offices (deep in our secret, volcano lair) about which game to feature in this week's spotlight. Next week's big retail releases each have some roadblocks. Rayman Legends (Xbox One)
has the same achievements as its 360 version and I simply refuse to write about NASCAR 14
until they put Ricky Bobby in it. That left us with a scant few options. With the rusty state of my Spanish
, El Chavo Kart
isn't a good match and (until this morning) I thought Takedown: Red Sabre
was what Peyton Manning was shouting during audibles this season. That leaves us with Strider
and its throwback to late-80's/early-90's greatness.Strider
has thirty achievements worth 400G, meaning you're going to have quite a few low-scoring pops in your run. Of those thirty, only seven are "Secret" and nine are attached to defeating certain enemies, which we can assume to be unmissable. The rest, as we like to say, are prime for examination.
Let's start with one of those enemy-based achievements.
While there's nothing outstanding here, this is one of the nine that specifically mention defeating certain enemies. Those nine achievements total up to 80G. Being an arcade-style platformer and a throw-back to 8 and 16-bit days, there may be a good degree of difficulty in some of these enemies, so be sure to consult guides (once they're written) as you plan your run(s).
Speaking of multiple runs, you will probably need to do a few to complete Strider
. Not only are there achievements for completing the game on Normal difficulty
and Hard difficulty
, you also have this gem to frustrate and challenge you.
At this time, there's nothing stating on which difficulty level this speed run will need to be done, so you may get lucky and only need to do a "Casual" or "Easy" playthrough to grind it out. Needless to say, those who love/hate time trials should take note.
The next achievement should be considered something of a classic, achievement challenge.
Again, there's nothing apparent about what difficulty this achievement must utilize, so you may be able to sneak through on a lower difficulty. That being said, rolling through 20 consecutive enemies without being hit is nothing to sneeze at.
Going further down a classic lane, the next pop will please those who enjoy games like Bayonetta

Without actually getting hands-on time in a preview, it looks as if Strider
will have several collectibles worth noting. Through the course of the game, you'll need to collect every Energy Upgrade
, Fallen Strider
, Health Upgrade
, and Kunai Upgrade
. Each of these achievements is worth either 10G or 15G. This next achievement is worth 20G, however, making it a bit more notable.
As with all collectibles, you can imagine that finding them will be much easier when a full walkthrough appears, but, in the mean time, you'll want to keep your eyes open as your slash your way through the game.
Completely unremarkable in every way, the achievement list for Strider
seems to have everything you'd expect from a game of its type and caliber. The "Speed Demon" achievement seems to take the cake for challenge at this point, but aside from that, there's not much that should scare off completionists when it is released next week.
