TA Gaming Stats - February 17th to 23rd 2014

By Chewie, 4 years ago
This report is for the period February 17th to February 23rd 2014.

Welcome one and all to this week's Stats for the middle of February here on TA. After many a week of mostly low numbers and not many new releases, things are starting to look up. This week mostly sees the Ultimate Games Sale making its impact. My Ewok helpers, the Statisticles are real suckers for sales like this because they love calculating all the savings they're making in various percentages and currencies. They don't seem to have grasped the fact that money saved on a crappy game is still money spent on a crappy game, let alone over 20 crappy games. So, they're all flat broke now and have a pile of games they don't even really want to play.

Games Started
33,187 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 53,201 games between them (1,873 different games).

The new releases for the One finally begin to pick up a little as Strider (Xbox One) takes the numbers over 1,100 in first. Rayman Legends (Xbox One) doesn't quite make it past 1,000 starters, but it does get over 900 in second place.

Ryse: Son of Rome sees an increase of starters from 350 to over 600 in third, thanks to a Deal of the Week reduction.

Recent releases Fable Anniversary and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII slip down below previous "Games with Gold" freebie, Dead Island (Xbox 360). Their numbers drop considerably, with Lightning Returns going from almost 1,800 down to just over 500.

On the new release front, Earth Defense Force 2025 makes in onto the table (just) with 285 starters in ninth place. Poor Rambo: The Video Game doesn't make it though. The mullet with the minigun will not be pleased. Also not making the table is the 360 version of Strider, proving people were much more invested in the One version. It'll be interesting to compare that to next week's cross-generation release of THIEF.

Instead of new releases, we get a bunch of sale titles, reduced as part of the massive Ultimate Games Sale. Driving games prove the most popular of the sales titles, with DiRT 3 and Driver: San Francisco taking fourth and fifth places with 440 and 390 starters each. Next up are Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360), Dante's Inferno and Portal 2 in sixth to eighth places, with between 290 and 320 new starters.

Last week, Toy Soldiers: Cold War managed nearly 1,500 starters in only two days of freeness as part of "Games with Gold", indicating it was a popular choice and would lead to some high numbers this week. Well, it pays off, as the game gets over 6,800 starters, cutting everything else down to size, including last week's big starter, the free-to-play World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition, which drops from over 5,300 starters down to under 2,000 in second.

Like retail, the arcade table is heavily influenced by the Ultimate Games Sale. Eight of the ten titles on the table were on offer (and the other two were free!). Most popular was Bejeweled 3 in third with over 1,200 starters thanks to a ridiculously low price. The first episode of The Walking Dead: Season Two also proved popular in fourth with over 800 starters. Moving down the list, we get Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien and Guardians of Middle-earth getting over 500 starters each in fifth and sixth, then Bastion (Xbox 360), Dust: An Elysian Tail, Motocross Madness and Rock Band Blitz in the bottom four spots with between 400 and 500 starters. Personally, the only thing I got from this sale was The Walking Dead, not because I didn't want anything or because the discounts weren't good, but because I already had everything I wanted from previous sales. Hello massive backlog.

With so many sales titles on offer, a new release was always going to struggle to do well. This week's new release, Takedown: Red Sabre, doesn't even try though. Even now, over a week after it was released, the game has only 51 starters and a dismal 1.2 out of 5 star rating.

Top Arcade Games Started

NBA JAM (WP) was this week's Deal of the Week title, but it doesn't prove to be a very popular one as it only makes it to sixth place with under 80 starters. The previous week's deal title, Kinectimals (WP), proves a lot more popular in first with 140 starters, down from last week's over 320.

Rayman Fiesta Run (WP) makes the table in second with 130 starters. It was originally soft released in India at the beginning of the month, then nothing more was heard from the game until it randomly appeared on the 18th in the US and UK. You may be saying: "Great! I didn't realise it was out, I'll download it now". Woah there! Unfortunately, the game was on the store for less than a day before it was pulled from all region stores. Sad times.

Games Completed
7,238 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,066 games between them (1,336 different games).

With more players working their way through it since its release a couple of weeks ago, The LEGO Movie Videogame (Xbox One) strides up from second to first place, increasing from 100 to over 130 completions. Recent easy completion deal title LocoCycle (Xbox One) takes a slip from over 170 in first place to under 120 completions in second.

Halo: Spartan Assault (Xbox One) jumps up the completions onto the table in fourth thanks to a bug fixing patch.

Top Xbox One Games Completed

Fable Anniversary continues its reign on the top of the table, although the numbers slip slightly from nearly 440 completions to 320. Battlefield 4 takes second with just one completion off 100 thanks to the "Second Assault" DLC being released to premium members. Lightning Returns makes its debut on the table a week after release with almost 100 completions in third.

In a rare treat, Darksiders II pulls in 90 completions in fourth, not because it was on sale, but because those nice folks at Nordic Games, who took over the franchise from the ashes of THQ, worked to get discontinued achievements for the title obtainable again.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Games Completed

With its popular discount, The Walking Dead: Season Two jumps up ahead of The Wolf Among Us with almost 690 completions. The other Telltale title slips from over 800 to under 350 completions in second.

Although it wasn't quite popular enough to make the started table, Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is such an breezy game to finish, it easily takes third place with over 230 completions. Bastion and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit are the other two easiest to complete sales titles and appear in eighth and tenth.

Released this week to the 360 after months of being on the One, LocoCycle takes ninth place with 60 completions despite not appearing on the started table.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Previous deal title Kinectimals jumps up the completions table from ninth to first with nearly 80 completions now that more people have sunk the time in to train up their little furballs. Can anyone explain the extra surge in Temple Run 2 (WP) completions, as it jumped from under 50 to 70 completions this week? Then again, calling a rise of 20 a 'surge' may be a little misrepresentative.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

Achievements Won
66,756 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 772,384 achievements online between them (51,582 different achievements).

A single "Second Assault" achievement from Battlefield 4 proves the most popular this week, Dirty Job for finding a hidden tunnel. Most of the rest of the table is filled with Lightning Returns, but with a couple of Fable Anniversary achievements thrown in for good measure in eighth and ninth.

Top Retail Achievements Won

It's a war out there as Toy Soldiers and World of Tanks fight or places on the table. Toy Soldiers wins it with seven places taken, including the top six.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Kinectimals almost fill the table again, with Rayman running into the bottom two places.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Despite all the sales titles being played, the top of Genre remains mostly unchanged. The bottom half of the table sees a lot more fluctuation. Racing pushes from 960,000 to over 1.1 million thanks to the likes of Dirt 3. It actually moves down the table though, from sixth to eighth, because the likes of Platformer and Strategy see a bigger increase in starters thanks to Rayman, Toy Soldiers and others, pushing them up into sixth and seventh.
